You indeed are fit for the sacrificial act, Agni, as the Hotar in the house of the people; make us prosperous, lord of the people, accept the offering, O Angiras.
Come to us, friend of Mitra, O god, speak to the gods, Agni, for the favor of heaven and earth; bring us well-being, a good dwelling, and let us cross over hatreds, distress, and misfortunes—may we cross over by your help.
O Agni, may he who, devoted to the gods, seeks wide light, be protected by you, righteous and radiant; whom you, together with Mitra and Varuna, O god, guard from harm and mortal distress.
He who worships with sacrifices, rejoices with offerings, and gives to Agni who opens the way—such a one, favored by fame, is never harmed, nor does distress befall the mortal.
Like the sun whose gaze is unblemished, when your fierce flames advance, your thoughts are formidable; the roaring, swift one, the leader—wherever he goes, there is a stirring, a dwelling for the eager.
Even his sharp form here is great; he blazes like a horse harnessed for the race; as the tongue of the axe, he licks, and like molten metal, he melts and burns the wood.
He alone, indeed, has set forth your praise, sharpening your brilliance like a stream of molten metal; whose shining course is wondrous, who is tireless in action, who, like a craftsman, with swift steps, overcomes the hostile.
He, like a bellowing bull, cannot be restrained; the mighty one, radiant, brings forth the dawns as a friend; who by night, who by day, is red among men, the immortal who is red among men by day.
Like the fresh radiance of heaven, whose strength is new, the vigorous one now shines among the plants; like the sun with his steady path, when he, with his wealth, fills both worlds, O bountiful one, with prosperity.
Whether yoked with swift steeds or with hymns, like lightning flashing with its showers, or with his fierce powers; or when he has fashioned the host of the Maruts, like an artisan, the mighty, impetuous one has shone forth.
Just as you, O son of strength, serve as priest for men, offering sacrifices to the gods, so now, Agni, united and harmonious, attend us, and, shining, worship the gods.
May Agni, the all-seeing, the guest of our dwelling, worthy of praise, knowing, establish for us; the immortal among mortals, Jātavedas, who, rich in gifts, becomes the guest at the dawns.
Like the heavens, whose brightness dispels darkness, he clothes himself with lights, like the shining sun; the unfailing, pure one pervades, even consuming what is to be eaten, the ancient things.
We speak, O son of strength, of your deeds, whether new or old, for Agni has made food by his birth; so you, source of strength, bestow strength on us, like a king who, with his might, protects his subjects.
He who eats the food set before him, like the wind, does not overstep the law, nor neglect the offerings; may we overcome the adversary who, at the beginning, commands hostility, like a thief who is seized and surrounded.
Like the sun with his radiant beams, Agni, you have stretched out the two worlds with your light; you brilliantly drive away the darkness, shining with your flame, advancing like a messenger who brings gifts.
For you, with the most delightful flames, we have chosen, Agni, that you may hear us greatly; like Indra with his might, or the god Vāyu, the most heroic fill you with their bounty.
Now, Agni, bring us welfare with unhostile paths, grant us wealth, carry us beyond harm; to those who praise you, bestow good fortune, may we rejoice, a hundred strong, with heroic sons.
I call upon you, O youthful son of strength, most powerful, whose words are true, who is mighty in thought; who bestows riches, wise, bountiful to all, generous, never failing.
In you, O priest, the ancient treasures are placed, O worthy of sacrifice, at the dawns and at the dwelling; in whom, as in the earth, all beings rest, in the pure one, all good fortunes are gathered.
You, in the gatherings, sit as charioteer of the gifts, by your will you have become lord of boons; thus you, wise Jātavedas, distribute riches to the worshipper, openly and secretly.
Whoever, O Agni, seeks to harm us, whether openly or as a false friend, let him be scorched by your unfailing, strong bulls, burn him, O most fierce, with your blazing power.
He who, with sacrifice, with kindling, with hymns, O son of strength, has pleased you; among mortals, the immortal, wise, shines forth with wealth, with glory, with renown.
Do this, O Agni, when invoked, repel our foes with your might, being powerful; whatever you desire with your heavenly flames and words, accept that, O singer, delight in our hymn.
May we attain that desire, O Agni, by your help; may we attain wealth, abundant riches, and strong offspring. May we attain strength, striving for vigor; may we attain your undiminishing and undecaying glory.
With new praise, seeking your favor, I approach the son of strength with sacrifice, desiring protection. The shining, black-backed, white one, the divine Hotar, comes, splitting the wood.
He is bright, thundering, standing in the shining realm, youngest among the ageless, resounding ones. He, the purest, most excellent Agni, follows many and vast things, bearing them.
Your flames, O Agni, driven everywhere by the wind, move brightly, pure in the pure. Fiercely shining, divine, newly-born, they conquer the woods, breaking them with force.
Those bright, pure, and radiant horses of yours, swift, spread over the earth. Then your wheel shines widely as it moves along the ridge of the cloud.
Then your tongue, O mighty one, darts forth, destroying, releasing the consuming flame among the cattle. Like a hero's advance, Agni's power, hard to restrain, fiercely devours the forests.
