अक्रविहस्ता सुकृते परस्पा यं त्रासाथे वरुणेळास्वन्तः । राजाना क्षत्रमहृणीयमाना सहस्रस्थूणं बिभृथः सह द्वौ
Without cruelty, with hands that act rightly, you protect him, O Mitra and Varuṇa, together with Ilā; as kings, unassailable in power, you uphold the thousand-pillared order, both together.
हिरण्यनिर्णिगयो अस्य स्थूणा वि भ्राजते दिव्यश्वाजनीव । भद्रे क्षेत्रे निमिता तिल्विले वा सनेम मध्वो अधिगर्त्यस्य
The golden channel and pillar of this one shine forth, like a chariot drawn by celestial horses; in the good field, marked and flourishing, may we obtain the honey of your favor.
हिरण्यरूपमुषसो व्युष्टावयस्थूणमुदिता सूर्यस्य । आ रोहथो वरुण मित्र गर्तमतश्चक्षाथे अदितिं दितिं च
At the dawn’s shining, the golden form and pillar of the sun are raised; you ascend, O Varuṇa and Mitra, from the depth, and behold both Aditi and Diti.
यद्बंहिष्ठं नातिविधे सुदानू अच्छिद्रं शर्म भुवनस्य गोपा । तेन नो मित्रावरुणावविष्टं सिषासन्तो जिगीवांसः स्याम
With your most ample, unfailing, generous protection, unbroken, O guardians of the world, with that, O Mitra and Varuṇa, protect us, that striving, we may live and prosper.
ऋतस्य गोपावधि तिष्ठथो रथं सत्यधर्माणा परमे व्योमनि । यमत्र मित्रावरुणावथो युवं तस्मै वृष्टिर्मधुमत्पिन्वते दिवः
As guardians of truth, you stand upon your chariot, upholding righteous order in the highest heaven; O Mitra and Varuṇa, for whom you favor here, for him the sweet rain pours from the sky.
सम्राजावस्य भुवनस्य राजथो मित्रावरुणा विदथे स्वर्दृशा । वृष्टिं वां राधो अमृतत्वमीमहे द्यावापृथिवी वि चरन्ति तन्यवः
You are sovereign kings of all beings, O Mitra and Varuṇa, shining in the assembly with insight; we seek your rain, your bounty, your immortality—the thunders move through heaven and earth.
सम्राजा उग्रा वृषभा दिवस्पती पृथिव्या मित्रावरुणा विचर्षणी । चित्रेभिरभ्रैरुप तिष्ठथो रवं द्यां वर्षयथो असुरस्य मायया
Sovereign, mighty, bull-like lords of heaven and earth, O Mitra and Varuṇa, wise among men; with wondrous clouds you make your sound, you rain upon the sky by the power of the Asura.
माया वां मित्रावरुणा दिवि श्रिता सूर्यो ज्योतिश्चरति चित्रमायुधम् । तमभ्रेण वृष्ट्या गूहथो दिवि पर्जन्य द्रप्सा मधुमन्त ईरते
Your power, O Mitra and Varuṇa, is established in heaven; the sun moves with shining weapon; you cover him with cloud and rain in the sky, and the honeyed drops of Parjanya stream forth.
रथं युञ्जते मरुतः शुभे सुखं शूरो न मित्रावरुणा गविष्टिषु । रजांसि चित्रा वि चरन्ति तन्यवो दिवः सम्राजा पयसा न उक्षतम्
The Maruts yoke their splendid, easy chariot, like a hero in contests, O Mitra and Varuṇa; the bright thunders move through the spaces, O sovereigns, you rain from the sky, milking its riches.
वाचं सु मित्रावरुणाविरावतीं पर्जन्यश्चित्रां वदति त्विषीमतीम् । अभ्रा वसत मरुतः सु मायया द्यां वर्षयतमरुणामरेपसम्
Parjanya speaks forth a resounding, radiant voice, O Mitra and Varuṇa; the Maruts dwell in the clouds by your wondrous power, and rain upon the spotless, ruddy sky.
धर्मणा मित्रावरुणा विपश्चिता व्रता रक्षेथे असुरस्य मायया । ऋतेन विश्वं भुवनं वि राजथः सूर्यमा धत्थो दिवि चित्र्यं रथम्
With discernment, O Mitra and Varuṇa, you uphold the laws, protecting the order by the Asura’s power; by truth you rule over all the worlds, you place the sun, the wondrous chariot, in the sky.
वरुणं वो रिशादसमृचा मित्रं हवामहे । परि व्रजेव बाह्वोर्जगन्वांसा स्वर्णरम्
With hymn we call upon Varuṇa the chastiser, and Mitra; like men moving within the embrace of strong arms, seeking the light.
ता बाहवा सुचेतुना प्र यन्तमस्मा अर्चते । शेवं हि जार्यं वां विश्वासु क्षासु जोगुवे
May those arms, guided by wisdom, come forth for us to be praised; for your favor, O both, is sought among all peoples.
यन्नूनमश्यां गतिं मित्रस्य यायां पथा । अस्य प्रियस्य शर्मण्यहिंसानस्य सश्चिरे
May I now attain the path of Mitra, may I walk his way; in the shelter of this dear, harmless protection, may we abide together.
युवाभ्यां मित्रावरुणोपमं धेयामृचा । यद्ध क्षये मघोनां स्तोतॄणां च स्पूर्धसे
With you two, O Mitra and Varuṇa, may I place a fitting hymn; for in your house, for the generous and for the singers, you are renowned.
आ नो मित्र सुदीतिभिर्वरुणश्च सधस्थ आ । स्वे क्षये मघोनां सखीनां च वृधसे
May Mitra with his gracious aids, and Varuṇa, come to our assembly; in your own house, for the generous and for friends, you bring increase.
युवं नो येषु वरुण क्षत्रं बृहच्च बिभृथः । उरु णो वाजसातये कृतं राये स्वस्तये
O Varuṇa, you two who bear great and mighty sovereignty, make wide space for us for the gaining of strength, for wealth, for well-being.
उच्छन्त्यां मे यजता देवक्षत्रे रुशद्गवि । सुतं सोमं न हस्तिभिरा पड्भिर्धावतं नरा बिभ्रतावर्चनानसम्
At the bright dawn, O worshipful ones of divine power, with the white cow, run to me, men, bearing the pressed Soma as elephants with your feet, with faces shining with praise.
यश्चिकेत स सुक्रतुर्देवत्रा स ब्रवीतु नः । वरुणो यस्य दर्शतो मित्रो वा वनते गिरः
He who perceives, he is truly wise; let him speak to us in the assembly of the gods—he whose words Varuṇa or Mitra, the clear-seeing, accepts.
ता हि श्रेष्ठवर्चसा राजाना दीर्घश्रुत्तमा । ता सत्पती ऋतावृध ऋतावाना जनेजने
For they, the kings of most splendid radiance, of far-reaching fame, they, the true lords, upholders of order, righteous in every generation.
ता वामियानोऽवसे पूर्वा उप ब्रुवे सचा । स्वश्वासः सु चेतुना वाजाँ अभि प्र दावने
To you, for help, I call upon the former ones, the best allies, with good horses, with clear understanding, for the winning of strength, to speed forward.
मित्रो अंहोश्चिदादुरु क्षयाय गातुं वनते । मित्रस्य हि प्रतूर्वतः सुमतिरस्ति विधतः
Even from distress, Mitra leads forth to a dwelling, for Mitra's favor is ever present, his good will is bountiful.
वयं मित्रस्यावसि स्याम सप्रथस्तमे । अनेहसस्त्वोतयः सत्रा वरुणशेषसः
May we be under Mitra's protection, most renowned, free from sin, guided by you, ever together with Varuṇa's favor.
युवं मित्रेमं जनं यतथः सं च नयथः । मा मघोनः परि ख्यतं मो अस्माकमृषीणां गोपीथे न उरुष्यतम्
You two, Mitra and Varuṇa, guide this people and lead them; do not abandon our generous one, do not let the protection of us seers be diminished.
आ चिकितान सुक्रतू देवौ मर्त रिशादसा । वरुणाय ऋतपेशसे दधीत प्रयसे महे
Perceiving, wise, O gods, mortals seek you, O Varuṇa, of shining order; let him dedicate himself to you for great striving.
ता हि क्षत्रमविह्रुतं सम्यगसुर्यमाशाते । अध व्रतेव मानुषं स्वर्ण धायि दर्शतम्
For they possess unshaken sovereignty, true lordship; then, as by a command, the radiant light is set among men.
ता वामेषे रथानामुर्वीं गव्यूतिमेषाम् । रातहव्यस्य सुष्टुतिं दधृक्स्तोमैर्मनामहे
To you we seek, for the chariots, for the wide pasture of cattle, for the well-praised gift, with hymns we honor you.
अधा हि काव्या युवं दक्षस्य पूर्भिरद्भुता । नि केतुना जनानां चिकेथे पूतदक्षसा
Indeed, you two, with ancient marvels of skill, have perceived the people with your sign, pure in wisdom.
तदृतं पृथिवि बृहच्छ्रवएष ऋषीणाम् । ज्रयसानावरं पृथ्वति क्षरन्ति यामभिः
That order, O earth, of great fame among the seers, ever flows unaging, abundant with streams.
आ यद्वामीयचक्षसा मित्र वयं च सूरयः । व्यचिष्ठे बहुपाय्ये यतेमहि स्वराज्ये
When, O Mitra, we and the wise, with your favoring gaze, strive for the wide protection, for self-rule.
