ह्वयाम्यग्निं प्रथमं स्वस्तये ह्वयामि मित्रावरुणाविहावसे । ह्वयामि रात्रीं जगतो निवेशनीं ह्वयामि देवं सवितारमूतये
I call Agni first for well-being, I call Mitra and Varuna for help; I call Night, the settler of the world, I call the god Savitar for aid.
आ कृष्णेन रजसा वर्तमानो निवेशयन्नमृतं मर्त्यं च । हिरण्ययेन सविता रथेना देवो याति भुवनानि पश्यन्
Moving in the dark space, establishing both immortal and mortal, the god Savitar goes with his golden chariot, observing all the worlds.
याति देवः प्रवता यात्युद्वता याति शुभ्राभ्यां यजतो हरिभ्याम् । आ देवो याति सविता परावतोऽप विश्वा दुरिता बाधमानः
The god goes by the downward path, he goes by the upward path, he goes with his shining, tawny horses; the god Savitar comes from afar, driving away all misfortunes.
अभीवृतं कृशनैर्विश्वरूपं हिरण्यशम्यं यजतो बृहन्तम् । आस्थाद्रथं सविता चित्रभानुः कृष्णा रजांसि तविषीं दधानः
Clothed in rays, of all forms, with golden yoke, the mighty, worshipful one, Savitar of brilliant light, has mounted his chariot, bearing power in the dark spaces.
वि जनाञ्छ्यावाः शितिपादो अख्यन्रथं हिरण्यप्रउगं वहन्तः । शश्वद्विशः सवितुर्दैव्यस्योपस्थे विश्वा भुवनानि तस्थुः
The two bay steeds with white feet have declared the people, drawing the chariot with its golden pole; ever, in the lap of the divine Savitar, all the worlds have taken their place.
तिस्रो द्यावः सवितुर्द्वा उपस्थाँ एका यमस्य भुवने विराषाट् । आणिं न रथ्यममृताधि तस्थुरिह ब्रवीतु य उ तच्चिकेतत्
Three heavens are in the lap of Savitar; two are manifest, one abides in the realm of Yama; like the axle of a chariot, they stand upon the immortal. Let him speak here who knows this.
वि सुपर्णो अन्तरिक्षाण्यख्यद्गभीरवेपा असुरः सुनीथः । क्वेदानीं सूर्यः कश्चिकेत कतमां द्यां रश्मिरस्या ततान
The fair-winged one has declared the regions of space; the deep-shaking, wise Asura, well-guiding. Where now is the Sun? Who perceives it? To which heaven has his ray extended?
अष्टौ व्यख्यत्ककुभः पृथिव्यास्त्री धन्व योजना सप्त सिन्धून् । हिरण्याक्षः सविता देव आगाद्दधद्रत्ना दाशुषे वार्याणि
He has declared eight directions of the earth, three deserts, seven rivers to be yoked; the golden-eyed Savitar, the god, has come, granting treasures and desirable gifts to the worshipper.
हिरण्यपाणिः सविता विचर्षणिरुभे द्यावापृथिवी अन्तरीयते । अपामीवां बाधते वेति सूर्यमभि कृष्णेन रजसा द्यामृणोति
Golden-handed Savitar, skilled in action, moves between both heaven and earth; he drives away disease from waters, goes forth to the Sun, and with the dark space he covers the sky.
हिरण्यहस्तो असुरः सुनीथः सुमृळीकः स्ववाँ यात्वर्वाङ् । अपसेधन्रक्षसो यातुधानानस्थाद्देवः प्रतिदोषं गृणानः
Golden-handed, the wise Asura, well-guiding, gracious, self-luminous, moves swiftly; he repels demons and sorcerers, the god stands praised at every dusk.
ये ते पन्थाः सवितः पूर्व्यासोऽरेणवः सुकृता अन्तरिक्षे । तेभिर्नो अद्य पथिभिः सुगेभी रक्षा च नो अधि च ब्रूहि देव
Those ancient paths of yours, O Savitar, dustless and well-made in the midspace—by these paths today, easy to travel, protect us and speak for us, O god.
प्र वो यह्वं पुरूणां विशां देवयतीनाम् । अग्निं सूक्तेभिर्वचोभिरीमहे यं सीमिदन्य ईळते
To you we call, O mighty one of many peoples, among the godly hosts—Agni, with hymns and words we invoke, whom everyone else also seeks.
जनासो अग्निं दधिरे सहोवृधं हविष्मन्तो विधेम ते । स त्वं नो अद्य सुमना इहाविता भवा वाजेषु सन्त्य
People have established Agni, strong in might, with offerings we worship you; so may you today, well-disposed, be present here, be our helper in contests.
प्र त्वा दूतं वृणीमहे होतारं विश्ववेदसम् । महस्ते सतो वि चरन्त्यर्चयो दिवि स्पृशन्ति भानवः
We choose you as messenger, as Hotar, all-knowing; your great flames move about, your rays touch the sky.
देवासस्त्वा वरुणो मित्रो अर्यमा सं दूतं प्रत्नमिन्धते । विश्वं सो अग्ने जयति त्वया धनं यस्ते ददाश मर्त्यः
The gods—Varuna, Mitra, Aryaman—have established you as the ancient messenger; with you, Agni, one conquers all wealth, the mortal who serves you.
मन्द्रो होता गृहपतिरग्ने दूतो विशामसि । त्वे विश्वा संगतानि व्रता ध्रुवा यानि देवा अकृण्वत
Joyful Hotar, lord of the house, Agni, you are the messenger among the people; in you all the firm laws are gathered, which the gods have made steadfast.
त्वे इदग्ने सुभगे यविष्ठ्य विश्वमा हूयते हविः । स त्वं नो अद्य सुमना उतापरं यक्षि देवान्सुवीर्या
In you, O Agni, most fortunate and youngest, every offering is invoked; so may you today, well-disposed, and also in the future, worship the gods with heroic strength.
तं घेमित्था नमस्विन उप स्वराजमासते । होत्राभिरग्निं मनुषः समिन्धते तितिर्वांसो अति स्रिधः
Thus, the reverent approach him, the self-ruler, with homage; with their offerings, men kindle Agni, striving to cross beyond distress.
घ्नन्तो वृत्रमतरन्रोदसी अप उरु क्षयाय चक्रिरे । भुवत्कण्वे वृषा द्युम्न्याहुतः क्रन्ददश्वो गविष्टिषु
Having slain Vritra, they crossed the two worlds, making wide space for dwelling; for Kanva, the bull, invoked for glory, neighing like a horse in the contests for cows.
सं सीदस्व महाँ असि शोचस्व देववीतमः । वि धूममग्ने अरुषं मियेध्य सृज प्रशस्त दर्शतम्
Sit down together, you are great; shine forth, most worthy of worship; send forth your ruddy smoke, O Agni, let it rise, most praised, most splendid.
यं त्वा देवासो मनवे दधुरिह यजिष्ठं हव्यवाहन । यं कण्वो मेध्यातिथिर्धनस्पृतं यं वृषा यमुपस्तुतः
You whom the gods have established here for Manu, most fit for sacrifice, bearer of offerings; whom Kanva, the pure guest, has kindled, the wealth-bringer, whom the bull, whom the praised one, has honored.
यमग्निं मेध्यातिथिः कण्व ईध ऋतादधि । तस्य प्रेषो दीदियुस्तमिमा ऋचस्तमग्निं वर्धयामसि
Agni, whom Kanva, the pure guest, has kindled according to truth—his radiance shines forth, these hymns are for him, we magnify that Agni.
रायस्पूर्धि स्वधावोऽस्ति हि तेऽग्ने देवेष्वाप्यम् । त्वं वाजस्य श्रुत्यस्य राजसि स नो मृळ महाँ असि
O Agni, you are the fulfiller of wealth, for your inherent power is present among the gods. You are the sovereign of strength and fame; be gracious to us, for you are great.
ऊर्ध्व ऊ षु ण ऊतये तिष्ठा देवो न सविता । ऊर्ध्वो वाजस्य सनिता यदञ्जिभिर्वाघद्भिर्विह्वयामहे
Rise up for our aid, stand upright like the god Savitar. Stand high as the bestower of strength, when with praises and offerings we call upon you.
ऊर्ध्वो नः पाह्यंहसो नि केतुना विश्वं समत्रिणं दह । कृधी न ऊर्ध्वाञ्चरथाय जीवसे विदा देवेषु नो दुवः
Protect us from harm from above with your sign; burn away every adversary. Make us rise up for the chariot, for life; reveal to us favor among the gods.
पाहि नो अग्ने रक्षसः पाहि धूर्तेरराव्णः । पाहि रीषत उत वा जिघांसतो बृहद्भानो यविष्ठ्य
Guard us, Agni, from the demon, protect us from distress and from the malicious. Protect us from the harmful and from those who wish to slay us, O youngest, of great radiance.
घनेव विष्वग्वि जह्यराव्णस्तपुर्जम्भ यो अस्मध्रुक् । यो मर्त्यः शिशीते अत्यक्तुभिर्मा नः स रिपुरीशत
Like a hammer, strike down the malicious on every side, O you who crush the foe, who hate us. Let not any mortal, delighting in evil deeds, become our enemy or rule over us.
अग्निर्वव्ने सुवीर्यमग्निः कण्वाय सौभगम् । अग्निः प्रावन्मित्रोत मेध्यातिथिमग्निः साता उपस्तुतम्
Agni has granted strength, Agni has given prosperity to Kanva. Agni has brought Mitra, the pure guest; Agni has bestowed what is praised.
अग्निना तुर्वशं यदुं परावत उग्रादेवं हवामहे । अग्निर्नयन्नववास्त्वं बृहद्रथं तुर्वीतिं दस्यवे सहः
With Agni we call Turvasha and Yadu from afar, the mighty god. Agni led Avavastha, Brhadratha, and Turviti to victory over the Dasyu.
नि त्वामग्ने मनुर्दधे ज्योतिर्जनाय शश्वते । दीदेथ कण्व ऋतजात उक्षितो यं नमस्यन्ति कृष्टयः
Manu established you, Agni, as a light for perpetual humanity. Kanva, born of truth, kindled you, whom peoples honor.
