The most mighty among the generous, king of peoples, Indra, for praise, the ancient songs have served him with many voices.
To him this poetic speech, this hymn, is to be sung for Indra; therefore, for the bearer of prayer, the three songs grow, the three songs shine.
Come with the stones, drink the pressed Soma, O lord of Soma; mighty Indra, with mighty ones, slayer of Vṛtra.
The stone is mighty, the exhilaration is mighty, this pressed Soma is mighty; mighty Indra, with mighty ones, slayer of Vṛtra.
I call you, mighty one, with mighty prayers, O wielder of the thunderbolt; mighty Indra, with mighty ones, slayer of Vṛtra.
Swift, thunderbolt-wielder, mighty, victorious, powerful, king, slayer of Vṛtra, Soma-drinker; harnessing the two bays, let Indra come to the midday pressing, rejoicing in the Soma.
When Svarbhanu, the demon, struck you, O Sun, with darkness, as one ignorant of the fields, bewildered, you illuminated the worlds.
When Svarbhanu's magic, O Indra, descended from the sky, Atri found the hidden Sun, veiled by darkness, with the fourth Brahman.
Let not this, your anger, fall upon me here; do not, out of wrath or fear, drive me away. You are Mitra, true in your gifts, and Varuna, the king, protects us both.
The priest, with stones and prayers, honored the gods with reverence; Atri restored the Sun's eye in the sky, dispelling Svarbhanu's magic.
The Sun whom Svarbhanu, the demon, struck with darkness—Atri discovered that darkness, while others could not.
Who then, O Mitra and Varuna, will protect you—whether from heaven's greatness or from earth's power, or in the seat of truth? May you shield us, as one guards cattle or horses for sacrifice.
May Mitra, Varuna, Aryaman, Indra, the Ribhus, and the Maruts favor us; and those who, with reverence, bestow generous praise upon Rudra, the gracious one.
To you, Ashvins, whom we call for help, in the nourishment of the chariot and wind, and to the lord of heaven, let us offer our hymn, as one brings gifts for sacrifice.
The divine Kanva, the priest, Tritha, and the wind united with Agni; Pushan and Bhaga, givers of all, have come to the contest, swift as horses.
Bring forth for you wealth yoked with horses; let the mind seek aid for riches. The auspicious Hotar of Ushij, and you, Maruts, mighty ones, are ever present.
Invoke for you Vayu, yoked to the chariot; praise the divine, wise provider with hymns. The righteous, generous wives here have set their thoughts upon us.
I approach you with worthy praises, with hymns that awaken even the youthful sky. Ushas and Night, knowing all, bring forth the sacrifice for mortals.
I sing to you, the nourishing ones, to the lord of men, to Tvashtar, the creator. With reverence, the blessed Dhiṣaṇā, the trees, and the herbs seek wealth.
May the mountains be our protectors, like the Vasus, strong and heroic. May the provider, the Aptyas, the worshipful, always increase our praise and grant us noble blessings.
You strengthen the seed of the earth, O mighty one; Tritha, the offspring of waters, brings abundant gifts. Agni, praised with hymns, with flaming hair, cuts through the woods.
How shall we speak to the great Rudra, to Kadra, the wise, to Bhaga? May the waters and herbs protect us, and heaven, forests, and mountains with leafy hair.
May the lord of nourishment hear us, the mountain, the swift, the powerful, the encompassing. May the waters, shining like fortresses, listen, flowing around the mighty hill.
Indeed, those great ones whom we praise, who bear wondrous gifts, know. Even the birds come to them for shelter, and mortals follow them, trembling with fear.
Now I shall speak of the divine and earthly births for Sumakha. May the heavens and the shining mountains grow, and may the wide rivers swell, overcoming obstacles.
At every step, may old age be set aside for me; may the strong protector guard me with her care. Let the great mother, the nourishing earth, grant us, with upright hands and straight paths, the favor of the wise.
How shall we serve the generous ones with reverence? Let us approach the Maruts with praise; let us approach the Maruts with renown. May Ahirbudhnya not bring harm upon us; let our guardian be ever near.
Thus, for offspring and wealth, the gods are sought by mortals; yes, the gods are sought by mortals. Here, may we place auspiciousness upon our bodies; and may decay, even if it comes, be devoured by Nirriti.
O gods, may your gracious favor, which brings strength, be ours; O Vasus, may we obtain the blessing of the cow. May the generous goddess, kindly and swift, come to us for good fortune.
Let Ilā, mother of the herd, approach us; may she be praised by our rivers, or by Urvaśī. May Urvaśī, praised in the broad heavens, and those who are abundant, bring forth the fruits of offering.
