अस्माकमिन्द्रेहि नो रथमवा पुरंध्या । वयं शविष्ठ वार्यं दिवि श्रवो दधीमहि दिवि स्तोमं मनामहे
Come to us, Indra, protect our chariot, O Purandhi. May we, most mighty, obtain glory in heaven, and in heaven may we offer our praise.
स आ गमदिन्द्रो यो वसूनां चिकेतद्दातुं दामनो रयीणाम् । धन्वचरो न वंसगस्तृषाणश्चकमानः पिबतु दुग्धमंशुम्
Let that Indra come here, who understands the wealth of treasures, who gives riches, who, like a thirsty wanderer in the desert, longs to drink the sweet, pressed Soma.
आ ते हनू हरिवः शूर शिप्रे रुहत्सोमो न पर्वतस्य पृष्ठे । अनु त्वा राजन्नर्वतो न हिन्वन्गीर्भिर्मदेम पुरुहूत विश्वे
To you, O strong one, O hero, O Hariva, let the Soma rise, like a mountain's summit. Following you, O king, as swift ones follow, may we rejoice with songs, O much-invoked one.
चक्रं न वृत्तं पुरुहूत वेपते मनो भिया मे अमतेरिदद्रिवः । रथादधि त्वा जरिता सदावृध कुविन्नु स्तोषन्मघवन्पुरूवसुः
Like a spinning wheel, O much-invoked one, my mind trembles with fear, O breaker of obstacles, at the thought of your might. The singer, always growing, places you on the chariot; may the generous one, rich in gifts, praise you.
एष ग्रावेव जरिता त इन्द्रेयर्ति वाचं बृहदाशुषाणः । प्र सव्येन मघवन्यंसि रायः प्र दक्षिणिद्धरिवो मा वि वेनः
This singer, like a stone, stirs up a great voice for you, Indra, eager for the pressed Soma. O generous one, with your left hand send forth gifts; with your right, O Hariva, do not withhold them.
वृषा त्वा वृषणं वर्धतु द्यौर्वृषा वृषभ्यां वहसे हरिभ्याम् । स नो वृषा वृषरथः सुशिप्र वृषक्रतो वृषा वज्रिन्भरे धाः
Let the sky increase you, the bull, O bull among bulls; you carry with the two bay steeds. So may you, O bull, O Indra of the strong chariot, O well-cheeked, O mighty, O thunderer, grant us wealth.
यो रोहितौ वाजिनौ वाजिनीवान्त्रिभिः शतैः सचमानावदिष्ट । यूने समस्मै क्षितयो नमन्तां श्रुतरथाय मरुतो दुवोया
He who, with three hundred companions, harnesses the two red, swift horses—let the young ones bow to him; may the Maruts, famed for their chariots, come together for him.
सं भानुना यतते सूर्यस्याजुह्वानो घृतपृष्ठः स्वञ्चाः । तस्मा अमृध्रा उषसो व्युच्छान्य इन्द्राय सुनवामेत्याह
He strives with the radiance of the sun, offering up, his back anointed with ghee, bending forward. For him, the undiminished dawns shine forth; let us press Soma for Indra, thus he says.
समिद्धाग्निर्वनवत्स्तीर्णबर्हिर्युक्तग्रावा सुतसोमो जराते । ग्रावाणो यस्येषिरं वदन्त्ययदध्वर्युर्हविषाव सिन्धुम्
The kindled fire is pleasing, the sacred grass is spread, the stones are prepared, and the Soma is pressed; the stones speak to him, and the priest, with the offering, approaches the stream.
वधूरियं पतिमिच्छन्त्येति य ईं वहाते महिषीमिषिराम् । आस्य श्रवस्याद्रथ आ च घोषात्पुरू सहस्रा परि वर्तयाते
The bride approaches, desiring her husband, and the queen brings forth the sacred utterance; from the sound of the chariot, many thousands turn about in praise.
न स राजा व्यथते यस्मिन्निन्द्रस्तीव्रं सोमं पिबति गोसखायम् । आ सत्वनैरजति हन्ति वृत्रं क्षेति क्षितीः सुभगो नाम पुष्यन्
That king is not shaken, in whom Indra, friend of the cows, drinks the strong Soma; with his companions he advances, he slays the serpent, he rules the people, fortunate and bearing a noble name.
पुष्यात्क्षेमे अभि योगे भवात्युभे वृतौ संयती सं जयाति । प्रियः सूर्ये प्रियो अग्ना भवाति य इन्द्राय सुतसोमो ददाशत्
He prospers in safety and in battle, conquering both in contest and in war; beloved by the Sun, beloved by Agni, is he who offers the pressed Soma to Indra.
उरोष्ट इन्द्र राधसो विभ्वी रातिः शतक्रतो । अधा नो विश्वचर्षणे द्युम्ना सुक्षत्र मंहय
Wide-mouthed, Indra, giver of wealth, bestower of gifts, O hundred-powered, grant us, for all people, glory, noble rule, and greatness.
यदीमिन्द्र श्रवाय्यमिषं शविष्ठ दधिषे । पप्रथे दीर्घश्रुत्तमं हिरण्यवर्ण दुष्टरम्
When, Indra, you, most mighty, have established fame and nourishment, you have spread far the long-heard, golden, unconquerable glory.
शुष्मासो ये ते अद्रिवो मेहना केतसापः । उभा देवावभिष्टये दिवश्च ग्मश्च राजथः
Those powers of yours, O stone-armed, are strong through wisdom and insight; you two gods rule for blessing, both in heaven and on earth.
उतो नो अस्य कस्य चिद्दक्षस्य तव वृत्रहन् । अस्मभ्यं नृम्णमा भरास्मभ्यं नृमणस्यसे
And now, O slayer of Vṛtra, of whatever skill you possess, grant us heroism, grant us the strength of heroes.
नू त आभिरभिष्टिभिस्तव शर्मञ्छतक्रतो । इन्द्र स्याम सुगोपाः शूर स्याम सुगोपाः
Now, with these blessings, O hundred-powered, grant us your protection; Indra, may we be well-guarded, hero, may we be well-guarded.
यदिन्द्र चित्र मेहनास्ति त्वादातमद्रिवः । राधस्तन्नो विदद्वस उभयाहस्त्या भर
Whatever splendid power, Indra, is yours, O stone-armed, bestowed by you, grant us that wealth, bring us both kinds of riches.
यन्मन्यसे वरेण्यमिन्द्र द्युक्षं तदा भर । विद्याम तस्य ते वयमकूपारस्य दावने
Whatever you consider most excellent, Indra, bring us that heavenly gift; may we know your favor, O generous one, for our burning need.
यत्ते दित्सु प्रराध्यं मनो अस्ति श्रुतं बृहत् । तेन दृळ्हा चिदद्रिव आ वाजं दर्षि सातये
That resolute mind of yours, eager to give, renowned and great, with it, O stone-armed, you even overcome the strong, you bring us the prize for attainment.
मंहिष्ठं वो मघोनां राजानं चर्षणीनाम् । इन्द्रमुप प्रशस्तये पूर्वीभिर्जुजुषे गिरः
The most mighty among the generous, king of peoples, Indra, for praise, the ancient songs have served him with many voices.
अस्मा इत्काव्यं वच उक्थमिन्द्राय शंस्यम् । तस्मा उ ब्रह्मवाहसे गिरो वर्धन्त्यत्रयो गिरः शुम्भन्त्यत्रयः
To him this poetic speech, this hymn, is to be sung for Indra; therefore, for the bearer of prayer, the three songs grow, the three songs shine.
आ याह्यद्रिभिः सुतं सोमं सोमपते पिब । वृषन्निन्द्र वृषभिर्वृत्रहन्तम
Come with the stones, drink the pressed Soma, O lord of Soma; mighty Indra, with mighty ones, slayer of Vṛtra.
वृषा ग्रावा वृषा मदो वृषा सोमो अयं सुतः । वृषन्निन्द्र वृषभिर्वृत्रहन्तम
The stone is mighty, the exhilaration is mighty, this pressed Soma is mighty; mighty Indra, with mighty ones, slayer of Vṛtra.
वृषा त्वा वृषणं हुवे वज्रिञ्चित्राभिरूतिभिः । वृषन्निन्द्र वृषभिर्वृत्रहन्तम
I call you, mighty one, with mighty prayers, O wielder of the thunderbolt; mighty Indra, with mighty ones, slayer of Vṛtra.
ऋजीषी वज्री वृषभस्तुराषाट् छुष्मी राजा वृत्रहा सोमपावा । युक्त्वा हरिभ्यामुप यासदर्वाङ्माध्यंदिने सवने मत्सदिन्द्रः
Swift, thunderbolt-wielder, mighty, victorious, powerful, king, slayer of Vṛtra, Soma-drinker; harnessing the two bays, let Indra come to the midday pressing, rejoicing in the Soma.
यत्त्वा सूर्य स्वर्भानुस्तमसाविध्यदासुरः । अक्षेत्रविद्यथा मुग्धो भुवनान्यदीधयुः
When Svarbhanu, the demon, struck you, O Sun, with darkness, as one ignorant of the fields, bewildered, you illuminated the worlds.
स्वर्भानोरध यदिन्द्र माया अवो दिवो वर्तमाना अवाहन् । गूळ्हं सूर्यं तमसापव्रतेन तुरीयेण ब्रह्मणाविन्ददत्रिः
When Svarbhanu's magic, O Indra, descended from the sky, Atri found the hidden Sun, veiled by darkness, with the fourth Brahman.
मा मामिमं तव सन्तमत्र इरस्या द्रुग्धो भियसा नि गारीत् । त्वं मित्रो असि सत्यराधास्तौ मेहावतं वरुणश्च राजा
Let not this, your anger, fall upon me here; do not, out of wrath or fear, drive me away. You are Mitra, true in your gifts, and Varuna, the king, protects us both.
ग्राव्णो ब्रह्मा युयुजानः सपर्यन्कीरिणा देवान्नमसोपशिक्षन् । अत्रिः सूर्यस्य दिवि चक्षुराधात्स्वर्भानोरप माया अघुक्षत्
The priest, with stones and prayers, honored the gods with reverence; Atri restored the Sun's eye in the sky, dispelling Svarbhanu's magic.
