People look toward him as he approaches; Indra seeks his friend who has pressed the Soma; the stone proclaims, 'Let the altar be filled,' for whom the priests move about with the aged one.
Those who have praised and those who praise you now, O immortal, let no harm come to them; accept our worship, and place your strength among those people in whom we may dwell with you.
You shattered, you released the channels, you opened the paths; you broke through the barriers, O Indra, unrestrained; when you split the great mountain, the streams flowed forth, and you slew the Dānava.
You, O wielder of the bolt, broke through the barriers with due seasons, you released the udder of the mountain; even the mighty serpent, lying with countless coils, you, O fierce Indra, slew with your strength.
Of that great, wild beast, Indra struck down the slayer with his might; he who thought himself unrivaled, from him another, more powerful, was born.
Even him among them, delighting in his own power, the offspring of the mist, grown strong in darkness, the bull, bearing the thunderbolt, struck down the fierce Shushna, the Dānava, with his weapon.
Even him, settled by his own cunning, you, O Indra, found his weak spot; when, O mighty one, filled with the strength of the draught, you placed the contender in the darkness of the house.
Even him, lying thus, swelling in the sunless darkness, you, rejoicing, O bull, with the pressed Soma, Indra, struck down from above.
Indra raised his weapon high for the great Dānava, seeking an unfailing blow; when you took up the bolt, you made the lowest of all creatures.
Even him, the roaring, honey-drinking, lying in the hollow, the fierce one, you, O mighty Indra, struck down; footless, handless, with a mighty blow you cast him into a dark place, his speech stilled.
Who can withstand his force, his might? Alone, unconquered, he wins the riches; even these, the swift ones, now, O gods, flee in fear of Indra's strength.
For him, the divine favor chooses Indra, as a swift woman chooses a husband; when his strength unites with all, the worlds bow down to the self-powerful one.
Indeed, I hear of you alone, O lord of truth, born of the Panchajanas, renowned among people. The eager ones have seized you for me, O newest Indra, calling you at night and at dawn.
Thus I hear of you, who moves with purpose, who gives riches to the priests. What use are those companions to you, O Indra, those priests who have set aside their desire for you?
For the great, for the mighty, I kindle praise among men—thus for Indra, the mighty, in the wilds. He who, when praised in the contest for wealth, is recognized by the people as a friend in battle.
So you, O Indra, inspired by thought, with hymns, did not tire of the yoke of your bay steeds. O generous one, as you thus gladly advance, may you, worthy of praise, protect the people.
None of those who have not praised you, O Indra, have ever surpassed us; when they were faithless, they became nothing. Stand upon your chariot, O thunderbolt-holder, hold the reins, O god, and drive your own horses.
Many are the praises, O Indra, that exist for you; fighting for the cows, you acted in the broad fields. You even made a place for the Sun in his own abode, O bull, and in battles you made the name of the Dasa known.
We are yours, O Indra, and so are those men, the hosts that are born and the chariots that have set out. May you come to us, O serpent-slayer, with your strength, like fortune, delightful in the offerings and lovely in the contests.
With your might, O Indra, you have surpassed all, immortal, most heroic in manly deeds. Grant us this wealth, O giver of riches, worthy of praise, I praise the gift of the very generous one.
Thus, O Indra, protect us with your great powers, O hero, as we praise you, O singer. And gladden those who give you the skin in the contest for wealth, delight in the sweet, well-pressed mead.
And may those ten white, gold-adorned, swift steeds of Trasadasyu, son of Purukutsa, carry me. Let them, marked with red, with their strength, truly bear me onward.
And may those red steeds of Marutashva, rich in strength, givers of abundance at the assembly, carry me. Thousands, ever moving, grant me gifts; let the noble one, shining, be praised for his beauty.
And may those favored, splendid, well-guided steeds of Dhvanya, marked with auspicious signs, carry me. By the greatness of the wealth of the seer Samvarana, like cows to the pen, may they come eagerly.
He whose enemies are unborn, who is ageless, full of light, according to his own law, is praised as the wondrous one. Press and cook for the bearer of prayer, for the much-praised one, set forth the offering.
He who has filled his belly with Soma, the generous one, delights in the sweetness of the drink. When he sets out to slay the beast, the great slayer, he, the thousand-striker, seeks out the foe for destruction.
Whoever presses Soma for him, whether at the press or in the vessel, becomes brilliant, O mighty one. The powerful one, Shakra, removes sin from him; the generous one, whose friend is the wise, makes his body pure.
He who has slain the father, or the mother, or the brother—Shakra does not desire him. He knows the path of the righteous, the one who acts with devotion; the treasure of wealth does not come to the sinful.
He does not call upon five or ten to help him; he does not join with the unoffering or the prosperous. He conquers knowledge, he strikes down the foe, the wise one shares the divine portion in the herd rich in cows.
The swift one, in the contest, sets the wheel in motion; he is hostile to the non-offerer, but a friend to the offerer. Indra, the subduer of all, the dreadful one, leads the Dasa and the Arya according to his will.
