वृषायमाणोऽवृणीत सोमं त्रिकद्रुकेष्वपिबत्सुतस्य । आ सायकं मघवादत्त वज्रमहन्नेनं प्रथमजामहीनाम्
Longing for strength, he chose Soma; in the threefold Soma-pressing, he drank the pressed juice. Then the generous one took up the bolt as his weapon and struck down the firstborn of the serpents.
यदिन्द्राहन्प्रथमजामहीनामान्मायिनाममिनाः प्रोत मायाः । आत्सूर्यं जनयन्द्यामुषासं तादीत्ना शत्रुं न किला विवित्से
When you, Indra, struck down the firstborn of the serpents, the cunning ones, their magic was shattered. From them, the sun was born, the dawn arose; then, indeed, the enemy did not wish to contend.
अहन्वृत्रं वृत्रतरं व्यंसमिन्द्रो वज्रेण महता वधेन । स्कन्धांसीव कुलिशेना विवृक्णाहिः शयत उपपृक्पृथिव्याः
He struck Vṛtra, the great obstacle, the restrainer, Indra with the mighty bolt, with a great blow. Like branches with an axe, the serpent was cut apart; he lay scattered upon the earth.
अयोद्धेव दुर्मद आ हि जुह्वे महावीरं तुविबाधमृजीषम् । नातारीदस्य समृतिं वधानां सं रुजानाः पिपिष इन्द्रशत्रुः
Like a fierce fighter, wild with pride, he advanced, a great hero, strong in battle. No one could withstand his attack; breaking through, Indra crushed his enemy.
अपादहस्तो अपृतन्यदिन्द्रमास्य वज्रमधि सानौ जघान । वृष्णो वध्रिः प्रतिमानं बुभूषन्पुरुत्रा वृत्रो अशयद्व्यस्तः
Footless and handless, he fought against Indra; the bolt was set upon his shoulder and struck him. The castrated bull, desiring to be equal, Vṛtra lay scattered in many places.
नदं न भिन्नममुया शयानं मनो रुहाणा अति यन्त्यापः । याश्चिद्वृत्रो महिना पर्यतिष्ठत्तासामहिः पत्सुतःशीर्बभूव
Like a broken dam, lying there, the waters flowed over him, moving on. Vṛtra, with his might, had enclosed them, but the serpent, deprived of his strength, became powerless.
नीचावया अभवद्वृत्रपुत्रेन्द्रो अस्या अव वधर्जभार । उत्तरा सूरधरः पुत्र आसीद्दानुः शये सहवत्सा न धेनुः
The lower part became Vṛtra's offspring; Indra struck down his upper part with the bolt. The son, holding the sunlight, remained above; Dānu lay below like a cow with her calf.
अतिष्ठन्तीनामनिवेशनानां काष्ठानां मध्ये निहितं शरीरम् । वृत्रस्य निण्यं वि चरन्त्यापो दीर्घं तम आशयदिन्द्रशत्रुः
Among the fixed places, in the midst of the stakes, his body was laid down. The hidden part of Vṛtra the waters move around; the enemy of Indra lay in deep darkness.
दासपत्नीरहिगोपा अतिष्ठन्निरुद्धा आपः पणिनेव गावः । अपां बिलमपिहितं यदासीद्वृत्रं जघन्वाँ अप तद्ववार
The wives of the Dasa and the guardians of the serpent stood restrained; the waters, like cows for the merchant, were withheld. When the hidden opening of the waters was closed, Indra struck Vritra and released it.
अश्व्यो वारो अभवस्तदिन्द्र सृके यत्त्वा प्रत्यहन्देव एकः । अजयो गा अजयः शूर सोममवासृजः सर्तवे सप्त सिन्धून्
The flood became swift as a horse, O Indra, when you alone confronted it. You conquered the cows, you conquered, O hero; you released Soma and sent forth the seven rivers to flow.
नास्मै विद्युन्न तन्यतुः सिषेध न यां मिहमकिरद्ध्रादुनिं च । इन्द्रश्च यद्युयुधाते अहिश्चोतापरीभ्यो मघवा वि जिग्ये
Neither lightning nor thunder opposed him; nor did the rain or the harsh storm hinder him. When Indra and the serpent fought, the generous one prevailed over his adversaries.
अहेर्यातारं कमपश्य इन्द्र हृदि यत्ते जघ्नुषो भीरगच्छत् । नव च यन्नवतिं च स्रवन्तीः श्येनो न भीतो अतरो रजांसि
Indra, see the path of the serpent you struck, which entered your heart with fear. When the nine and ninety streams flowed, like a frightened eagle you crossed the realms.
इन्द्रो यातोऽवसितस्य राजा शमस्य च शृङ्गिणो वज्रबाहुः । सेदु राजा क्षयति चर्षणीनामरान्न नेमिः परि ता बभूव
Indra, the king of the settled and the wild, with the thunder-armed horned one, advanced. The king rules over the peoples; the enemies have vanished, and the wheel has encompassed all.
एतायामोप गव्यन्त इन्द्रमस्माकं सु प्रमतिं वावृधाति । अनामृणः कुविदादस्य रायो गवां केतं परमावर्जते नः
With these praises, let us approach Indra, who increases our splendid bounty. May he, without deception, grant us wealth; may he reveal to us the sign of the cows.
उपेदहं धनदामप्रतीतं जुष्टां न श्येनो वसतिं पतामि । इन्द्रं नमस्यन्नुपमेभिरर्कैर्य स्तोतृभ्यो हव्यो अस्ति यामन्
I have come to the generous, unfailing giver, as a falcon to a cherished dwelling. Worshipping Indra with supreme hymns, I offer him praise, for he is worthy of invocation by the singers.
नि सर्वसेन इषुधीँरसक्त समर्यो गा अजति यस्य वष्टि । चोष्कूयमाण इन्द्र भूरि वामं मा पणिर्भूरस्मदधि प्रवृद्ध
The archer, with all his arrows ready, drives the cows for him whom he favors. Indra, being urged, grants abundant gifts; let not the merchant, grown powerful, harm us.
वधीर्हि दस्युं धनिनं घनेनँ एकश्चरन्नुपशाकेभिरिन्द्र । धनोरधि विषुणक्ते व्यायन्नयज्वानः सनकाः प्रेतिमीयुः
You struck down the wealthy enemy with your hammer, Indra, moving alone among the allies. You scattered the wealth, breaking it apart; the non-sacrificers, the ancient ones, went to their doom.
परा चिच्छीर्षा ववृजुस्त इन्द्रायज्वानो यज्वभि स्पर्धमानाः । प्र यद्दिवो हरिव स्थातरुग्र निरव्रताँ अधमो रोदस्योः
Even those who sought to surpass Indra, the non-sacrificers, were humbled by the sacrificers. When you, O mighty one, stood firm in heaven, the lawless ones became lowest among earth and sky.
अयुयुत्सन्ननवद्यस्य सेनामयातयन्त क्षितयो नवग्वाः । वृषायुधो न वध्रयो निरष्टाः प्रवद्भिरिन्द्राच्चितयन्त आयन्
The hosts of the blameless, unwilling to fight, were driven away by the nine singers. Like a bull with weapons, the weak were expelled; proclaiming Indra, they returned, rejoicing.
त्वमेतान्रुदतो जक्षतश्चायोधयो रजस इन्द्र पारे । अवादहो दिव आ दस्युमुच्चा प्र सुन्वत स्तुवतः शंसमावः
You, Indra, have crossed those who roared and devoured, those who were hostile beyond the realms. You have cast down the Dasa from the sky; for the one who presses and praises, you bring glory.
चक्राणासः परीणहं पृथिव्या हिरण्येन मणिना शुम्भमानाः । न हिन्वानासस्तितिरुस्त इन्द्रं परि स्पशो अदधात्सूर्येण
They made a circuit of the earth, adorned with golden jewels. Not moving, they did not reach Indra; the rays were placed around him by the sun.
परि यदिन्द्र रोदसी उभे अबुभोजीर्महिना विश्वतः सीम् । अमन्यमानाँ अभि मन्यमानैर्निर्ब्रह्मभिरधमो दस्युमिन्द्र
When you, Indra, encompassed both heaven and earth with your greatness, everywhere, those who thought themselves mighty were overcome by the arrogant, and you, Indra, made the Dasa lowest among them.
न ये दिवः पृथिव्या अन्तमापुर्न मायाभिर्धनदां पर्यभूवन् । युजं वज्रं वृषभश्चक्र इन्द्रो निर्ज्योतिषा तमसो गा अदुक्षत्
Those who did not reach the ends of heaven and earth, nor surrounded the giver of wealth with their tricks, Indra, the bull, fashioned the thunderbolt; with light, he drove the cows out of darkness.
अनु स्वधामक्षरन्नापो अस्यावर्धत मध्य आ नाव्यानाम् । सध्रीचीनेन मनसा तमिन्द्र ओजिष्ठेन हन्मनाहन्नभि द्यून्
The waters flowed according to their nature, and increased in the midst of the ships. With united mind, Indra, with the strongest force, struck and conquered the heavens.
न्याविध्यदिलीबिशस्य दृळ्हा वि शृङ्गिणमभिनच्छुष्णमिन्द्रः । यावत्तरो मघवन्यावदोजो वज्रेण शत्रुमवधीः पृतन्युम्
Indra pierced the stronghold of Dilipa, broke the horned demon Shushna. As far as you, generous one, are superior in strength, with the thunderbolt you slew the enemy, the challenger.
अभि सिध्मो अजिगादस्य शत्रून्वि तिग्मेन वृषभेणा पुरोऽभेत् । सं वज्रेणासृजद्वृत्रमिन्द्रः प्र स्वां मतिमतिरच्छाशदानः
The flame advanced against his enemies; with the sharp bull, he attacked the forts. Indra released the obstruction with the thunderbolt; his own inspired thought brought forth the gifts.
आवः कुत्समिन्द्र यस्मिञ्चाकन्प्रावो युध्यन्तं वृषभं दशद्युम् । शफच्युतो रेणुर्नक्षत द्यामुच्छ्वैत्रेयो नृषाह्याय तस्थौ
Indra, you brought Kutsa to us, and with him, the mighty bull Dashadyu, who fought in battle; the dust, thrown up by their hooves, did not reach the sky, and Ushvitra's son stood firm for the conquest of men.
आवः शमं वृषभं तुग्र्यासु क्षेत्रजेषे मघवञ्छ्वित्र्यं गाम् । ज्योक्चिदत्र तस्थिवांसो अक्रञ्छत्रूयतामधरा वेदनाकः
You brought the bull Shama to us in the battles of the Tugras, O generous one, and the cow Shvitri for the contest over the field; even standing in broad daylight, they did not flee, and the enemy, lying below, saw their defeat.
त्रिश्चिन्नो अद्या भवतं नवेदसा विभुर्वां याम उत रातिरश्विना । युवोर्हि यन्त्रं हिम्येव वाससोऽभ्यायंसेन्या भवतं मनीषिभिः
Let your three-wheeled chariot come today, O Ashvins, with your all-pervading power and your bounty; for your mechanism, like garments of frost, is approached by the wise with their prayers.
त्रयः पवयो मधुवाहने रथे सोमस्य वेनामनु विश्व इद्विदुः । त्रय स्कम्भास स्कभितास आरभे त्रिर्नक्तं याथस्त्रिर्वश्विना दिवा
Three swift steeds carry the honey-bearing chariot, following the melody of Soma, known to all; three pillars, firmly set at the beginning, you travel three nights and three days, O Ashvins.
