स इत्क्षेति सुधित ओकसि स्वे तस्मा इळा पिन्वते विश्वदानीम् । तस्मै विशः स्वयमेवा नमन्ते यस्मिन्ब्रह्मा राजनि पूर्व एति
He dwells happily in his own abode; for him, nourishment flows abundantly from all sources; to him, the clans bow willingly, in whom the priestly power advances foremost among rulers.
अप्रतीतो जयति सं धनानि प्रतिजन्यान्युत या सजन्या । अवस्यवे यो वरिवः कृणोति ब्रह्मणे राजा तमवन्ति देवाः
Unopposed, he conquers and wins wealth, both from adversaries and from allies; the king who grants passage to the priest, for his assistance, the gods protect.
इन्द्रश्च सोमं पिबतं बृहस्पतेऽस्मिन्यज्ञे मन्दसाना वृषण्वसू । आ वां विशन्त्विन्दवः स्वाभुवोऽस्मे रयिं सर्ववीरं नि यच्छतम्
Indra and Brihaspati, drink the Soma together, delighting in this sacrifice, O mighty ones; let the self-born drops enter you, and grant us wealth, full of all heroes.
बृहस्पत इन्द्र वर्धतं नः सचा सा वां सुमतिर्भूत्वस्मे । अविष्टं धियो जिगृतं पुरंधीर्जजस्तमर्यो वनुषामरातीः
Brihaspati and Indra, increase our strength; let your favor be with us; accept our thoughts, seize the wise counsel, and let the foe be shattered, let the hostile ones be subdued.
इदमु त्यत्पुरुतमं पुरस्ताज्ज्योतिस्तमसो वयुनावदस्थात् । नूनं दिवो दुहितरो विभातीर्गातुं कृणवन्नुषसो जनाय
This, the most excellent light, has arisen before us, dispelling darkness and revealing paths; now, the daughters of heaven, shining, make a way for the people, O Dawns.
अस्थुरु चित्रा उषसः पुरस्तान्मिता इव स्वरवोऽध्वरेषु । व्यू व्रजस्य तमसो द्वारोच्छन्तीरव्रञ्छुचयः पावकाः
The splendid Dawns have appeared in front, like measured voices in rituals; they open the two gates of darkness, shining, pure, and radiant.
उच्छन्तीरद्य चितयन्त भोजान्राधोदेयायोषसो मघोनीः । अचित्रे अन्तः पणयः ससन्त्वबुध्यमानास्तमसो विमध्ये
Rising, today the Dawns distribute gifts, generous, bestowing wealth; let the unremarkable ones remain among the darkness, while the awakened ones move forth.
कुवित्स देवीः सनयो नवो वा यामो बभूयादुषसो वो अद्य । येना नवग्वे अङ्गिरे दशग्वे सप्तास्ये रेवती रेवदूष
Who among you, O goddesses, is new or ancient? Which of you, O Dawns, has come today? By whom did the Angiras, with nine and ten cows, and the seven-mouthed one, gain riches?
यूयं हि देवीरृतयुग्भिरश्वैः परिप्रयाथ भुवनानि सद्यः । प्रबोधयन्तीरुषसः ससन्तं द्विपाच्चतुष्पाच्चरथाय जीवम्
For you, O goddesses, with horses yoked in truth, swiftly traverse all worlds; awakening, O Dawns, the living, both two-footed and four-footed, for the chariot.
क्व स्विदासां कतमा पुराणी यया विधाना विदधुरृभूणाम् । शुभं यच्छुभ्रा उषसश्चरन्ति न वि ज्ञायन्ते सदृशीरजुर्याः
Where are those ancient ones, which among them, by what actions did the Ribhus accomplish their tasks? The Dawns, bright and shining, move in beauty, yet their forms are not known, nor are they alike or subject to decay.
ता घा ता भद्रा उषसः पुरासुरभिष्टिद्युम्ना ऋतजातसत्याः । यास्वीजानः शशमान उक्थै स्तुवञ्छंसन्द्रविणं सद्य आप
Those indeed, those auspicious Dawns of old, are fragrant, glorious, born of truth and reality; in whom the singer, praising with hymns, quickly attains abundant wealth.
ता आ चरन्ति समना पुरस्तात्समानतः समना पप्रथानाः । ऋतस्य देवीः सदसो बुधाना गवां न सर्गा उषसो जरन्ते
They move together, united from the front, united in purpose, spreading together; the goddesses of truth, awakening from their seat, like the streams of cows, the Dawns stir forth.
ता इन्न्वेव समना समानीरमीतवर्णा उषसश्चरन्ति । गूहन्तीरभ्वमसितं रुशद्भिः शुक्रास्तनूभिः शुचयो रुचानाः
They, like waves, move together, united in color, the Dawns advance; hiding the darkness with their bright bodies, pure, radiant, shining with their forms.
रयिं दिवो दुहितरो विभातीः प्रजावन्तं यच्छतास्मासु देवीः । स्योनादा वः प्रतिबुध्यमानाः सुवीर्यस्य पतयः स्याम
O shining daughters of heaven, grant us wealth, full of offspring; may you, awakening from your pleasant abode, make us lords of noble strength.
तद्वो दिवो दुहितरो विभातीरुप ब्रुव उषसो यज्ञकेतुः । वयं स्याम यशसो जनेषु तद्द्यौश्च धत्तां पृथिवी च देवी
This, O shining daughters of heaven, I address to you, O Dawns, the sign of sacrifice; may we be renowned among people, and may heaven and earth, the goddesses, grant this.
प्रति ष्या सूनरी जनी व्युच्छन्ती परि स्वसुः । दिवो अदर्शि दुहिता
She, the radiant daughter, rises, awakening her sister; the daughter of heaven is seen.
अश्वेव चित्रारुषी माता गवामृतावरी । सखाभूदश्विनोरुषाः
Like a variegated, red mare among horses, the mother of cows, rich in milk, became a friend to the Ashvins, O Ushas.
उत सखास्यश्विनोरुत माता गवामसि । उतोषो वस्व ईशिषे
You are indeed the friend of the Ashvins, you are the mother of cows; you, O Ushas, are the mistress of wealth.
यावयद्द्वेषसं त्वा चिकित्वित्सूनृतावरि । प्रति स्तोमैरभुत्स्महि
You, wise one, who keeps away hatred, who is the bestower of fair speech, we have approached with songs of praise.
प्रति भद्रा अदृक्षत गवां सर्गा न रश्मयः । ओषा अप्रा उरु ज्रयः
The auspicious rays have appeared, like streams of cows; O Ushas, you have opened wide a broad space for living.
आपप्रुषी विभावरि व्यावर्ज्योतिषा तमः । उषो अनु स्वधामव
You, shining one, have filled the wide expanse, dispelling darkness with your light; O Ushas, you follow your own law.
आ द्यां तनोषि रश्मिभिरान्तरिक्षमुरु प्रियम् । उषः शुक्रेण शोचिषा
You stretch your rays to the sky, to the wide beloved midspace, O Ushas, with your bright radiance.
तद्देवस्य सवितुर्वार्यं महद्वृणीमहे असुरस्य प्रचेतसः । छर्दिर्येन दाशुषे यच्छति त्मना तन्नो महाँ उदयान्देवो अक्तुभिः
We choose that great gift of the god Savitar, the wise lord, by which he grants protection to the worshipper by his own power; may that great god bring us to the days with his lights.
दिवो धर्ता भुवनस्य प्रजापतिः पिशङ्गं द्रापिं प्रति मुञ्चते कविः । विचक्षणः प्रथयन्नापृणन्नुर्वजीजनत्सविता सुम्नमुक्थ्यम्
The supporter of heaven, the lord of beings, the sage puts on his tawny garment; the far-seeing one, spreading and filling, Savitar, has generated auspicious praise.
आप्रा रजांसि दिव्यानि पार्थिवा श्लोकं देवः कृणुते स्वाय धर्मणे । प्र बाहू अस्राक्सविता सवीमनि निवेशयन्प्रसुवन्नक्तुभिर्जगत्
He fills the celestial and earthly regions; the god makes his glory for his own order; Savitar has stretched out his arms at the impulse, establishing and setting in motion the world with the days.
अदाभ्यो भुवनानि प्रचाकशद्व्रतानि देवः सविताभि रक्षते । प्रास्राग्बाहू भुवनस्य प्रजाभ्यो धृतव्रतो महो अज्मस्य राजति
The god Savitar, unerring, has made the worlds shine; with his ordinances he protects the creatures; he has stretched out his arms for the beings, steadfast in his vow, he shines as king of the great path.
त्रिरन्तरिक्षं सविता महित्वना त्री रजांसि परिभुस्त्रीणि रोचना । तिस्रो दिवः पृथिवीस्तिस्र इन्वति त्रिभिर्व्रतैरभि नो रक्षति त्मना
Savitar, by his greatness, encompasses the threefold midspace, the three regions, the three lights; he rules over three heavens, three earths, three waters; with these three ordinances he protects us by his own power.
बृहत्सुम्नः प्रसवीता निवेशनो जगत स्थातुरुभयस्य यो वशी । स नो देवः सविता शर्म यच्छत्वस्मे क्षयाय त्रिवरूथमंहसः
The great-minded, all-fostering, establishing god, who is master of both the moving and the stationary, may that god Savitar grant us shelter, for our dwelling, a triple protection from harm.
आगन्देव ऋतुभिर्वर्धतु क्षयं दधातु नः सविता सुप्रजामिषम् । स नः क्षपाभिरहभिश्च जिन्वतु प्रजावन्तं रयिमस्मे समिन्वतु
May the god come with the seasons, may Savitar increase our home, grant us good offspring and food; may he quicken us with nights and days, may he bestow wealth with offspring upon us.
अभूद्देवः सविता वन्द्यो नु न इदानीमह्न उपवाच्यो नृभिः । वि यो रत्ना भजति मानवेभ्यः श्रेष्ठं नो अत्र द्रविणं यथा दधत्
The god Savitar has become worthy of praise; now, at this time of day, he is to be honored by men; he distributes treasures to mortals, may he grant us here the best wealth as he does.
