You, O Agni, were the first Angiras, the sage, the god among gods, a gracious friend; by your ordinance, the wise Maruts with shining forms were born.
You, O Agni, are the foremost Angiras, the most skilled, you encompass the ordinance of the gods; vast, wise, you extend to all the worlds, two-mothered, lying in many places for the one who seeks.
You, O Agni, first appeared for Mātariśvan, manifest for Vivasvat with good purpose; the two worlds trembled at your priestly office, O mighty one, you bore the burden, O unaging, great treasure.
You, O Agni, have brought the sky for Manu, for Pururavas, the doer of good, you are even more skillful; when you are released from the jaws of your fathers, they led you first, and again another time.
You, O Agni, are the bull, increaser of strength, with uplifted flame you are worthy of praise; you know the offering, the vaṣaṭ-call, you summon the people at the beginning for a single lifetime.
You, O Agni, protect the man who walks the path of righteousness in the assembly, O wise one; even in scanty wealth, you defeat the greater with the lesser, O winner of the hero's prize.
You, O Agni, place the mortal in the highest immortality for fame, day by day; for the one who thirsts for both kinds of birth, you make joy, you lead forth to the sun.
You, O Agni, make us praisers, winners of wealth and glory; may we prosper in new deeds, may Heaven and Earth, with the gods, protect us.
You, O Agni, ever-wakeful god, are at the lap of our forefathers among the gods, blameless; be mindful of the body, and of the wise singer, you, O good one, bestow all wealth upon us.
You, O Agni, are our wisdom, you are our father, you are our youth, and we are your kin; may riches, abundant and a thousandfold, come together to you, O guardian of the ordinance, with heroic men.
You, Agni, the gods made first for the home, as lord of the people of Manu, as the chief of the clan of Nahusha. They made you the provider of sustenance for humanity, the enforcer of order, just as a son is born from his own father.
Guard us, Agni, with your divine protections; O generous one, shield our bodies, you who are worthy of praise. Be the protector of our offspring, our descendants, our cattle; keep watch without blinking, upholding your law.
You, Agni, are the inner guardian for the one who offers sacrifice, free from harm, four-eyed and blazing. You carry the offerings for the generous, for the blameless; even the song of the singer you accept with your mind.
You, Agni, for the one who praises widely, bring splendid wealth; whatever highest good you win by your power. Even for the oppressed you are called the father of help; you lead to maturity, you show the paths of wisdom.
You, Agni, protect on all sides the man whose right hand is diligent, as a coat of armor woven around him. He who, with sweet butter, makes your dwelling pleasant, who sacrifices with living faith, attains the highest heaven.
Consider this refuge, Agni, for us; consider this path which we have come from afar. You are the helper, the father, the wisdom of the good, the support, the inspirer of mortals.
Like Manu, like the Angirases, O Agni, pure as in the house of Yayāti of old, come here, bring the divine assembly, seat them on the sacred grass, and enjoy the dear offering.
With this prayer, Agni, grow strong; may the power we have done for you be known. Lead us forward to wealth, bring us together with your favor, rich in strength.
Now I will proclaim the heroic deeds of Indra, the first that the wielder of the bolt accomplished. He struck down the serpent, released the waters, split open the sides, and shattered the mountains.
He struck the serpent lying on the mountain; Tvaṣṭṛ fashioned for him the thunderbolt, his fitting weapon. Like swift-flowing cows, the waters rushed straight to the sea.
Longing for strength, he chose Soma; in the threefold Soma-pressing, he drank the pressed juice. Then the generous one took up the bolt as his weapon and struck down the firstborn of the serpents.
When you, Indra, struck down the firstborn of the serpents, the cunning ones, their magic was shattered. From them, the sun was born, the dawn arose; then, indeed, the enemy did not wish to contend.
He struck Vṛtra, the great obstacle, the restrainer, Indra with the mighty bolt, with a great blow. Like branches with an axe, the serpent was cut apart; he lay scattered upon the earth.
Like a fierce fighter, wild with pride, he advanced, a great hero, strong in battle. No one could withstand his attack; breaking through, Indra crushed his enemy.
Footless and handless, he fought against Indra; the bolt was set upon his shoulder and struck him. The castrated bull, desiring to be equal, Vṛtra lay scattered in many places.
Like a broken dam, lying there, the waters flowed over him, moving on. Vṛtra, with his might, had enclosed them, but the serpent, deprived of his strength, became powerless.
The lower part became Vṛtra's offspring; Indra struck down his upper part with the bolt. The son, holding the sunlight, remained above; Dānu lay below like a cow with her calf.
Among the fixed places, in the midst of the stakes, his body was laid down. The hidden part of Vṛtra the waters move around; the enemy of Indra lay in deep darkness.
The wives of the Dasa and the guardians of the serpent stood restrained; the waters, like cows for the merchant, were withheld. When the hidden opening of the waters was closed, Indra struck Vritra and released it.
The flood became swift as a horse, O Indra, when you alone confronted it. You conquered the cows, you conquered, O hero; you released Soma and sent forth the seven rivers to flow.
