He who made Dadhikrā, the horse, at the kindling of fire, at the dawn's breaking, may Aditi make him sinless, united with Mitra and Varuṇa.
For Dadhikrā, we invoke the blessing of nourishment and greatness, the good name of the Maruts. For well-being, we call Varuṇa, Mitra, Agni, and Indra, wielder of the thunderbolt.
Both sides call upon Indra, raising their voices as they approach the sacrifice. Mitra and Varuṇa gave Dadhikrā, the slayer, the horse, for mortals, to us.
I have made Dadhikrā, the victorious horse, fragrant for us. May his mouth be sweet, may he carry us across to long life.
Let us now honor Dadhikrā, may the rising dawns awaken me. May the waters, Agni, the dawns, the sun, Brihaspati, Angiras, and the victorious one grant us strength.
Strong, bearing, striving for cows, possessing glory, the swift, the energetic, the rapid, the flying, Dadhikrā produces nourishment and light.
And as he runs swiftly, not even a leaf is stirred by the wind from his path; like a falcon gliding down from the sky, Dadhikrāvan, strong and full of vigor, circles around the course.
And that steed, eager and impetuous, strains at the harness, bound at the neck, his sides pressed by the girth; Dadhikrāvan, with his will, follows the path, his flanks quivering, his mane tossing.
The swan dwells in purity, the shining one in the midspace, the priest at the altar, the guest in the house; he sits among men, in the best place, in truth, in the sky, born of water, of cows, of truth, of stone—he is truth.
O Indra and Varuṇa, who among mortals has gained your favor with praise and offerings, like an immortal priest? Whosoever, inspired by us, has touched your hearts with devotion, O Indra and Varuṇa, with reverence.
That man, O Indra and Varuṇa, who, seeking your friendship, acts with devotion, he strikes down foes and enemies in battle; with your help, mighty ones, he becomes renowned.
O Indra and Varuṇa, grant such a treasure to those men who praise you, as you have before; when friends, for the sake of friendship, rejoice with pressed Soma, with good cheer.
O Indra and Varuṇa, you two, most powerful and mighty, place your thunderbolt in this battle; against the evil-minded, the wolfish enemy who threatens us, unleash your overwhelming strength.
O Indra and Varuṇa, be the leaders of this prayer, advance like a bull before the cow; may she, our nourishing one, yield for us, like a cow to her calf, abundant milk in a thousand streams.
Where sons are cherished, where offspring thrive, where the sun shines, and men are strong in manliness—there, O Indra and Varuṇa, may you be with us, with your protection, in this wide expanse.
To you alone, for ancient and abundant help, for the prize, we turn, eager for the contest; we choose you for friendship, for dearness, O heroes, greatest ones, like a father who brings happiness.
Those thoughts that seek your help, victorious, have not gone astray, but have reached you, generous ones; like cows for beauty, they have approached Soma; my hymns and intentions have reached Indra and Varuṇa.
These intentions of mine have reached Indra and Varuṇa, seeking wealth; they have come near, like guests to the house of the generous, like swift chariots seeking fame.
By the nature of the horse, the chariot, the well-fed, and the ever-abiding wealth, may we be lords; may those who grant these, with new protections, always accompany us with their riches.
Come to us, O mighty ones, with your great protections, O Indra and Varuṇa, for the winning of the prize; when the hosts exult in battle, may we be the winners of your favor.
Let my sovereignty, like that of a ruler, be established over all peoples, as the immortals have; the gods support the will of Varuṇa, I am king over the people, chosen by the highest.
I am King Varuṇa; to me those first powers of sovereignty have been entrusted; the gods support the will of Varuṇa, I am king over the people, chosen by the highest.
I am Indra, I am Varuṇa; your greatness is vast and deep, the two realms are well-ordered; like Tvaṣṭṛ, knowing all beings, I unite and uphold the heavens and the earth.
I made the waters swell, I held back those that would flow away, I upheld the sky, the seat of truth; by truth, I am the son of Aditi, a follower of truth, and I spread out the threefold world.
May men with swift horses, striving for prizes, not summon me to battle; may those chosen not call upon me in conflict. I, Maghavan, Indra, prepare the offering; I send forth dust, overpowering with might.
I have accomplished all these things; no one matches my divine, unconquered power. When the Somas delight me, and other hymns as well, both the boundless realms tremble in fear.
You know all the worlds; declare them, O wise one, to Varuṇa. You have heard of and struck down the Vṛtras; you, Indra, have released the rivers for the chosen ones.
Here, our fathers were present—seven seers—when the Dāsa was being bound in distress. They sacrificed to Indra, the slayer of Vṛtra, the half-divine, for the sake of Trasadasyu.
Indeed, Purukutsa's wife invoked you, Indra and Varuṇa, with offerings and homage. Then you granted the king Trasadasyu, the slayer of Vṛtra, the half-divine one.
With wealth may we, together with our cattle, rejoice, O gods, with offerings and with grain. Indra and Varuṇa, may you always grant us that cow, unfailing, ever-yielding.
