Like a she-wolf, I tore out the entrails; I found no comforter among the gods. I saw my wife being taken away, then the falcon carried off the honey for me.
Thus, O Indra, wielder of the bolt, all the gods, easy to invoke, choose you here; both great heaven and earth, grown vast and high, have chosen you alone for the slaying of Vritra.
The gods released the living waters, O Indra, true-born king; you slew the serpent lying around, unyielding, and opened the paths for all the streams.
You found him unsatisfied, lying unconscious, asleep, O Indra; with the bolt, you struck apart the serpent lying across the seven flows.
With your might, O Indra, you stirred the dried-up bed of the river; with your strength, you broke the firm barriers, and with your force, you struck the mountain ridges.
The people rushed forth like offspring, the streams went together like chariots; you, Indra, with your force, released the rivers, sending forth the waves.
You made the great, all-nourishing, ever-flowing earth pour forth for Turvīti and Vayya; with your might, O Indra, you made the rivers easy to cross for the worshipper.
You, O Indra, opened up the ancient, youthful, law-abiding rivers, like the sky with its clouds; you filled the thirsty deserts, and subdued the wives of the Dasa.
Many dawns and autumns were hidden; you slew Vritra and released the rivers; Indra, having broken the bonds, made the channels flow for the earth.
With the humble, you took the son, the unoffered, from his dwelling, O Indra; the blind one devoured the serpent, and the peaks, even those hard to reach, were conquered.
The wise have spoken to you of your former deeds, O knower, recounting your works to the one who understands; just as, O King, you have entered into acts of strength and your own renowned exploits, and the waters, O noble one.
Now, praised Indra, now, being sung to, grant sustenance to the worshipper, as rivers nourish; for you, O wielder of the bays, a new hymn has been composed—may we, with insight, be ever victorious in the contest.
May Indra come to us from afar, or from near, the mighty one who brings help to the seeker; the lord of men, strong-armed with the thunderbolt, the victorious one in battles, the subduer in contests.
Let Indra come to us with his bays, turning towards us for help and for riches; the thunderer, the bountiful, stands by our sacrifice, following our call for strength.
You, Indra, will establish this sacrifice of ours at the forefront; you will grant us wisdom; like a slayer of foes, O thunderer, for the gaining of wealth—may we, with you, O noble one, win the contest.
Gladly, with a gracious mind, approach us, O Indra, delighting in the well-pressed Soma, O self-sustaining one; drink of the sweet mead brought before you, rejoice in the exhilarating draught, as you desire.
He who, like a tree full of fruit, or a swift racer, has been loosened by the new seers—like a youth exulting over a maiden, so do I, desiring, call upon Indra, the much-invoked.
Like a mountain, mighty in his own strength, is Indra, born strong for enduring power from the beginning; he has seized the ancient thunderbolt, terrible, as one draws forth a vessel filled with wealth from the water.
There is none who can reach his path by birth, nor any who can exhaust his bounty or his gifts; raising up his strength, O mighty one, bestow upon us, O much-invoked, abundant wealth.
You watch over the wealth, the dwelling of peoples, and you open the pen of the kine; you, O manly one, are victorious in assemblies, you lead forth a great heap of riches for us.
By what power is that heard, O most powerful, by which you accomplish mighty deeds again and again? You, who are most generous to the worshipper, discerning many gifts, then bestow wealth upon the singer.
Do not harm us; bring us the gift, grant that to us; give much of what you have to the worshipper for giving; in this new, excellent, and praiseworthy hymn, let us, praising Indra, declare your glory.
Now, praised Indra, now, being sung to, grant sustenance to the worshipper, as rivers nourish; for you, O wielder of the bays, a new hymn has been composed—may we, with insight, be ever victorious in the contest.
Let Indra come here for help, praised by us, let the hero sit with us at the banquet; ever growing in might, whose many powers, like the sky, may his dominion ever flourish unconquered.
Here, praise his mighty deeds, those of the strong one, of great fame, of abundant gifts to men; whose resolve is sovereign in the assembly, who calls forth and stirs the peoples.
Let Indra come from the sky, from the earth, quickly from the sea, or from the waters; the bringer of light, for our help, O Marut-companion, or from the distant seat of truth.
Of the strong, great wealth, of which he is lord, that we would praise in the assemblies—Indra, who wins by his might among the wealthy, who leads the bold to the possession of riches.
He who, bowing in reverence, restrains the arrogant, who sets forth speech, generating it for the sacrifice; the generous, much-invoked one, with hymns—let him, Indra, be made the Hotar in the gatherings.
If, guided by wisdom, you dwell among the swift ones, abiding in the cave of the mountain of the Maujiga, O Hotar, who is great and kindles the fire for us in the assemblies, you are the guardian of the dwelling.
Whenever the mighty Bhārvara exerts his strength for praise and offering, when he is hidden in the cave of the Maujiga, then, through devotion and striving, he brings forth delight.
