The sky considered itself the begetter of your heroic power, O Indra; the most skillful made you, who begot the sun, the mighty thunderbolt, unshaken, like the foundation of the seat.
He alone stretches forth the two worlds, the king of peoples, much-invoked Indra; all the gods rejoice in his truth, in the bounty of the generous god who is praised.
All the Somas became his, all the exhilarating draughts of the great one; you became the lord of riches for the givers of wealth, O Indra, to distribute all peoples.
You, indeed, from the beginning of your birth, O Indra, have distributed all peoples; you, O bountiful one, with the thunderbolt, cut off the coiled one lying across the path.
I have upheld Indra, the mighty, the powerful, the great, the boundless bull with the good thunderbolt; he who slew Vṛtra, who wins the prize, who gives gifts, the bountiful Maghavan, rich in treasures.
This Maghavan, chosen, acts together with the right, he alone hears in the battles; this one brings the prize, he wins what he seeks—may we be dear to him in friendship.
This one is heard when conquering, and also when striking; this one, too, sets the cattle free by battle. When Indra makes his wrath true, all that is firm trembles and moves away from him.
Indra won the cattle together, the gold together, the horses together—Maghavan, who has many (gifts); with these men, the most heroic of men, he divides wealth, he gathers riches.
How much, indeed, does Indra surpass his mother? How much his father, the begetter, who begot him? He stirs his might again and again, like the wind driven by roaring thunderclouds.
You, Maghavan, make the perishable imperishable; you stir up dust in confusion. Like the sky breaking with thunderbolts, Maghavan, grant wealth to the worshipper.
This one has set in motion the wheel of the sun; he has made the path of the flowing one move. Drawing in the blackness, he devours the skin at the root of his domain, in its source.
In the Asikni, the worshipper is like the Hotṛ priest.
The wise, seeking cattle, approach Indra for friendship, seeking horses, praising the bull for strength; desiring offspring, the begetter of offspring, the undeceivable, let us stir him, as one stirs a treasure for help.
Be our protector, seeing, our helper, renowned, the destroyer of foes, the drinker of Soma; friend, father, best of fathers, let us make the world for the one who seeks long life.
Be our friend, our helper, O Indra, as we praise you, granting life to the singer; for we have made you, with these praises, mighty, O Indra, with these hymns, may you be magnified.
Indra, the bountiful, is praised—when he strikes down the many Vṛtras alone, unconquered; his singer is dear to him, in whose protection neither gods nor mortals can hinder.
Thus may Indra, the bountiful, the wide-seeing, do for us true deeds, the upholder of peoples, the unerring; you, king of beings, place upon us fame, great glory, for the singer.
Now, praised, Indra, now, sung, may you pour forth wealth for the singer, as rivers do; for you, O Harivaḥ, a new hymn has been made—may we, with insight, always be companions of the chariot.
This path, ancient and well-trodden, is the one by which all the gods were born; from here, indeed, the mighty one should be born—let no one lead the mother astray from her course.
I will not go out by that way—it is hard to pass, difficult; I will cross over by the sides, not by the middle. Many deeds have I done, to be done; I will fight with you, I will question you.
He looked after his departing mother, but did not follow the cows, nor did he go after them. In Tvaṣṭṛ's house, Indra drank Soma, the hundred-streamed, pressed by Camva.
What did he accomplish with that strength? He seized a thousand, and many autumns before. For there is no one equal to him, neither among those born nor among those to be born.
Thinking him as one not to be spoken of, his mother hid the mighty one in secret, but by his own strength, clothed in his own power, he arose and, being born, filled both heaven and earth.
These, like women who have not found a husband, lament and cry out, like those who keep the law; ask them what this means, what they are saying, who among the waters breaks the stone enclosure.
What secret do these waters speak for him? They wish to declare something blameworthy of Indra. My son, by a great blow, slew Vritra, and released the rivers.
Even I abandoned you, young woman, even I left you, sleeping on the bank; even the waters, wishing well for the child, abandoned you, and even Indra, with his strength, rose up.
Even your jaws, O bountiful one, were split apart, even your lower jaw was struck down; then, the upper one, having been struck, became the head of the Dasa, crushed by the blow.
The cow bore a sturdy, unassailable, mighty bull—Indra—into your house; the mother, wishing her calf to go freely, herself desired to let him go to wander.
Yet the mother followed after the buffalo, and these gods abandoned you, O son; then Indra, about to slay Vritra, said: 'Friend Vishnu, stride forth and extend the path.'
Who made your mother a widow? Who wished to kill you as you moved? Which god, O Marut, was with you when you seized your father by the foot and cast him down?
