Send forth your spies, be the swiftest, be the guardian of this people, unassailable. Whoever speaks evil of us from afar or near, O Agni, let none of them harm us.
Rise, O Agni, stand up, stretch yourself out; let the enemies flee from your sharpness. Whoever has created hostility against us, burn him down, like dry wood.
Be upright, shoot back on our behalf, reveal the divine powers, O Agni. Lower the strength of the sorcerers, destroy kin and non-kin, annihilate the enemies.
He knows your favor, youngest one, who seeks you, who has approached the path for prayer. For him, all bright days and riches shine forth, the noble ones illuminate the distant places.
May he be fortunate, O Agni, generous, who pleases you with constant offerings and hymns. May he prosper in his own life and home; for him, all bright days and blessings assemble.
I praise your favor with a loud voice; may this song grow old with you. May we honor you with fine horses and splendid chariots; may we uphold dominion for ourselves day by day.
Here, may you dwell abundantly, come near, morning and evening, shining day by day. Playing, may we, with cheerful hearts, serve you; with your brilliance, may we stand among the people.
Whoever approaches you, O Agni, with fine horses, splendid gold, and a chariot full of wealth, you become his protector, his friend, whoever delights in the hospitality of men.
I loosen the bonds of greatness with words of kinship; thus I follow after the lineage of my father, Gotama. You, O Hotar, youngest, well-intentioned, master of the household, know the meaning of this speech for us.
Ever-wakeful, swift, well-disposed, untiring, unmalicious, most diligent—these guardians, sitting together, O Agni, may they protect us from harm.
Those guardians, not acting out of self-interest, O Agni, seeing the darkness, protected from evil; you, all-knowing, preserved those doers of good, and the hostile, greedy ones did not overpower them.
With you as ally, with you as protector, by your guidance may we attain riches. Dispel both curses, true and false; by your support, act without hesitation.
With this kindling, O Agni, we perform worship; accept the praised hymn. Burn away the envious, protect us from harm, from the deceitful, from the malicious, O friend of the great.
With united devotion, let us worship Agni Vaiśvānara, the generous, with great praise. With unweakened, mighty words, let us support him, who upholds both worlds.
Do not despise the gift which the god, self-sustaining, has given to me, a mortal. For cooking, Gṛtsu, the immortal, wise, Vaiśvānara, most heroic, mighty Agni.
He, of double height, great, with sharp flames, a bull with a thousand streams, mighty in strength—Agni, knowing the hidden track of the cow, has declared to me this inspired thought.
Agni blazed forth with sharp jaws, with burning flame, who is bountiful. Those who diminish the domain of Varuṇa, the beloved, the steadfast order of Mitra, he destroys.
Like women without brothers, divided, like hostile wives, mothers at odds, evil, false, untruthful—such people have created this deep path.
This, O Agni, is my small, shining hymn for you—may it not be a heavy burden, like a great load. You have established the vast, firm, deep, mighty back with your sevenfold energy.
Upon this, indeed, let the same thought, the same intention, purify the hymn with its resolve. On the beautiful hide of the spotted one, in the forefront, the form is set, shining, to be proclaimed.
What is to be spoken of this speech of mine, which is placed in secret? The wise speak of it as hidden. As water flows away from the cows, so the beloved form, the foremost step, departs.
This, indeed, is great, of vast aspect, which the cow, united with the dawn, follows as ancient. Shining on the path of truth, hidden, the swift one has swiftly perceived.
Then, shining, he accompanied his parents, and followed the hidden, beautiful one of the spotted. In the mother's place, in the highest abode, the tongue of the bull, of the shining, of the devoted, sits.
I speak the truth, seeking with reverence, with praise, O Jātavedas, what is this? You possess all that is here, whatever wealth is in heaven or whatever is on earth.
What is the wealth for us, what precious thing of his? Tell us, O Jātavedas, who knows. The highest, hidden path of his—what is that step of his, like a track, which we have not reached?
What is the boundary, what the work, what the favor, that we may swiftly reach, like racers, the prize? When will the goddesses, wives of the immortal, the shining dawns, extend their color to us?
With words that are untrue, feeble, and deceptive, those who are not satisfied by the offering speak here, O Agni; what do they say in this place? Let those without weapons sit together in counsel.
For the glory of this kindled, mighty, and generous one, the face of the house shines forth; clad in bright garments, of beautiful form, he blazes like a lord of wealth, bestowing many gifts.
Rise up, O Agni, priest of our sacrifice, stand upright for the rite, most worthy of worship; for you comprehend all our hymns, O wise one, you are the inspirer of our thoughts.
The unerring priest has sat down among the tribes—Agni, gentle, wise in the assemblies; he raised his light upward like the sun, like smoke he stretched forth to the sky.
