महत्तद्वः कवयश्चारु नाम यद्ध देवा भवथ विश्व इन्द्रे । सख ऋभुभिः पुरुहूत प्रियेभिरिमां धियं सातये तक्षता नः
Great is your beautiful name, O wise ones, when you, O gods, become all for Indra; with the Ṛbhus, O much-invoked friend, with your dear ones, fashion this thought of ours for success.
अर्यमा णो अदितिर्यज्ञियासोऽदब्धानि वरुणस्य व्रतानि । युयोत नो अनपत्यानि गन्तोः प्रजावान्नः पशुमाँ अस्तु गातुः
Aryaman, Aditi, worthy of sacrifice, the unbroken vows of Varuṇa; may you unite us with offspring, O travelers, may our path be fruitful, may we have cattle for the journey.
देवानां दूतः पुरुध प्रसूतोऽनागान्नो वोचतु सर्वताता । शृणोतु नः पृथिवी द्यौरुतापः सूर्यो नक्षत्रैरुर्वन्तरिक्षम्
The messenger of the gods, born in many ways, may he speak to us, all-knowing, sinless; may earth, heaven, and the waters hear us, may the sun with the stars, and the broad midspace.
शृण्वन्तु नो वृषणः पर्वतासो ध्रुवक्षेमास इळया मदन्तः । आदित्यैर्नो अदितिः शृणोतु यच्छन्तु नो मरुतः शर्म भद्रम्
May the mighty mountains hear us, steadfast in their place, rejoicing with nourishment; may Aditi with the Ādityas hear us, may the Maruts grant us auspicious protection.
सदा सुगः पितुमाँ अस्तु पन्था मध्वा देवा ओषधीः सं पिपृक्त । भगो मे अग्ने सख्ये न मृध्या उद्रायो अश्यां सदनं पुरुक्षोः
May the path to our fathers always be easy, may the gods with honey moisten the plants; O Bhaga, do not fail me in friendship, may I reach the dwelling of the generous one unharmed.
स्वदस्व हव्या समिषो दिदीह्यस्मद्र्यक्सं मिमीहि श्रवांसि । विश्वाँ अग्ने पृत्सु ताञ्जेषि शत्रूनहा विश्वा सुमना दीदिही नः
Enjoy the offerings, O swift one, shine forth with our oblations; grant us renown directly. O Agni, in every contest you conquer our foes; shine upon us with all good favor.
उषसः पूर्वा अध यद्व्यूषुर्महद्वि जज्ञे अक्षरं पदे गोः । व्रता देवानामुप नु प्रभूषन्महद्देवानामसुरत्वमेकम्
When the dawns, earlier than the rest, have shone forth, the great, imperishable mark of the cow is born. Following the ordinances of the gods, the mighty one approaches; the great, single lordship of the gods.
मो षू णो अत्र जुहुरन्त देवा मा पूर्वे अग्ने पितरः पदज्ञाः । पुराण्योः सद्मनोः केतुरन्तर्महद्देवानामसुरत्वमेकम्
Let not the gods here withdraw from us, nor the ancient fathers, O Agni, who know the path. The sign is within the two ancient abodes; the great, single lordship of the gods.
वि मे पुरुत्रा पतयन्ति कामाः शम्यच्छा दीद्ये पूर्व्याणि । समिद्धे अग्नावृतमिद्वदेम महद्देवानामसुरत्वमेकम्
My desires wander in many places; I seek to attain the ancient things with peace. With Agni kindled, let us speak rightly; the great, single lordship of the gods.
समानो राजा विभृतः पुरुत्रा शये शयासु प्रयुतो वनानु । अन्या वत्सं भरति क्षेति माता महद्देवानामसुरत्वमेकम्
The same king, apportioned, lies in many places, joined to the sleepers, following the forests. One mother bears the calf, another holds it; the great, single lordship of the gods.
आक्षित्पूर्वास्वपरा अनूरुत्सद्यो जातासु तरुणीष्वन्तः । अन्तर्वतीः सुवते अप्रवीता महद्देवानामसुरत्वमेकम्
Some, from the former, do not abandon the later; suddenly, among the young ones, they are born within. The pregnant ones bear, the silent one does not speak; the great, single lordship of the gods.
शयुः परस्तादध नु द्विमाताबन्धनश्चरति वत्स एकः । मित्रस्य ता वरुणस्य व्रतानि महद्देवानामसुरत्वमेकम्
They lie beyond, and here the two-mothered one moves bound; the single calf wanders. These are the ordinances of Mitra and Varuṇa; the great, single lordship of the gods.
द्विमाता होता विदथेषु सम्राळन्वग्रं चरति क्षेति बुध्नः । प्र रण्यानि रण्यवाचो भरन्ते महद्देवानामसुरत्वमेकम्
The two-mothered Hotar, sovereign in the assemblies, moves forward, the base remains. The lovely ones bear lovely speech; the great, single lordship of the gods.
शूरस्येव युध्यतो अन्तमस्य प्रतीचीनं ददृशे विश्वमायत् । अन्तर्मतिश्चरति निष्षिधं गोर्महद्देवानामसुरत्वमेकम्
Like a hero fighting at the end, he sees all that is set before him. Within the mind, he moves, hidden in the cow; the great, single lordship of the gods.
नि वेवेति पलितो दूत आस्वन्तर्महाँश्चरति रोचनेन । वपूंषि बिभ्रदभि नो वि चष्टे महद्देवानामसुरत्वमेकम्
The gray messenger moves within, trembling; within the great one, he moves with radiance. Bearing forms, he looks upon us from all sides; the great, single lordship of the gods.
विष्णुर्गोपाः परमं पाति पाथः प्रिया धामान्यमृता दधानः । अग्निष्टा विश्वा भुवनानि वेद महद्देवानामसुरत्वमेकम्
Viṣṇu the guardian protects the highest path, upholding the beloved, immortal abodes. Agni knows all the worlds; the great, single lordship of the gods.
नाना चक्राते यम्या वपूंषि तयोरन्यद्रोचते कृष्णमन्यत् । श्यावी च यदरुषी च स्वसारौ महद्देवानामसुरत्वमेकम्
They have fashioned diverse, twin forms; of these, one shines bright, the other is dark. Tawny and ruddy, the two sisters; the great, single lordship of the gods.
माता च यत्र दुहिता च धेनू सबर्दुघे धापयेते समीची । ऋतस्य ते सदसीळे अन्तर्महद्देवानामसुरत्वमेकम्
Where the mother and the daughter, both cows, together yield their milk, both giving abundantly. In the seat of truth, they sit within; the great, single lordship of the gods.
अन्यस्या वत्सं रिहती मिमाय कया भुवा नि दधे धेनुरूधः । ऋतस्य सा पयसापिन्वतेळा महद्देवानामसुरत्वमेकम्
The cow, having mounted, has placed her calf in another; by what being has she set it down? She, swelling with the milk of truth, flows forth; the great, single lordship of the gods.
पद्या वस्ते पुरुरूपा वपूंष्यूर्ध्वा तस्थौ त्र्यविं रेरिहाणा । ऋतस्य सद्म वि चरामि विद्वान्महद्देवानामसुरत्वमेकम्
With her foot she wears many forms; she stands upright, moving with three supports. In the abode of truth I move, knowing; the great, single lordship of the gods.
पदे इव निहिते दस्मे अन्तस्तयोरन्यद्गुह्यमाविरन्यत् । सध्रीचीना पथ्या सा विषूची महद्देवानामसुरत्वमेकम्
As if a foot were set within, O wondrous one, between them one is hidden, one is manifest. The path is straight, but one strays; the great, single lordship of the gods.
आ धेनवो धुनयन्तामशिश्वीः सबर्दुघाः शशया अप्रदुग्धाः । नव्यानव्या युवतयो भवन्तीर्महद्देवानामसुरत्वमेकम्
Let the cows, ever-yielding, milk for us, abundant, unwearied, never failing. Ever new, ever young they become; the great, single lordship of the gods.
यदन्यासु वृषभो रोरवीति सो अन्यस्मिन्यूथे नि दधाति रेतः । स हि क्षपावान्स भगः स राजा महद्देवानामसुरत्वमेकम्
When the bull bellows among the others, he places his seed in another herd. He is the lord of the nights, he is the dispenser, he is the king; the great, single lordship of the gods.
वीरस्य नु स्वश्व्यं जनासः प्र नु वोचाम विदुरस्य देवाः । षोळ्हा युक्ताः पञ्चपञ्चा वहन्ति महद्देवानामसुरत्वमेकम्
Let us now proclaim the heroic nobility, the horse-wealth of the people, the wisdom known by the gods. Sixteen yoked, five by five, draw it; the great, single lordship of the gods.
देवस्त्वष्टा सविता विश्वरूपः पुपोष प्रजाः पुरुधा जजान । इमा च विश्वा भुवनान्यस्य महद्देवानामसुरत्वमेकम्
The god Tvaṣṭṛ, Savitṛ, of manifold forms, has nourished the creatures, has generated them in many ways. And all these worlds are his; the great, single lordship of the gods.
मही समैरच्चम्वा समीची उभे ते अस्य वसुना न्यृष्टे । शृण्वे वीरो विन्दमानो वसूनि महद्देवानामसुरत्वमेकम्
The great earth, even and well-ordered, and the broad sky—both are established by his wealth. The heroic one, seeking riches, is heard; the great, single lordship of the gods.
इमां च नः पृथिवीं विश्वधाया उप क्षेति हितमित्रो न राजा । पुरःसदः शर्मसदो न वीरा महद्देवानामसुरत्वमेकम्
This earth, all-supporting, abides for us, like a king who is a friend to all. Like heroes sitting in the forecourt, in the shelter; the great, single lordship of the gods.
निष्षिध्वरीस्त ओषधीरुतापो रयिं त इन्द्र पृथिवी बिभर्ति । सखायस्ते वामभाजः स्याम महद्देवानामसुरत्वमेकम्
The plants, the waters, the earth, O Indra, bear wealth for you. May we be your friends, sharing in your gifts; the great, single lordship of the gods.
न ता मिनन्ति मायिनो न धीरा व्रता देवानां प्रथमा ध्रुवाणि । न रोदसी अद्रुहा वेद्याभिर्न पर्वता निनमे तस्थिवांसः
Neither the cunning nor the wise diminish the first, steadfast ordinances of the gods. The two worlds, unbetraying, with their known boundaries, nor the mountains, standing firm, have not declined.
षड्भाराँ एको अचरन्बिभर्त्यृतं वर्षिष्ठमुप गाव आगुः । तिस्रो महीरुपरास्तस्थुरत्या गुहा द्वे निहिते दर्श्येका
Six bearers, one moves alone, upholding the highest order; the cows have come near. Three great ones stand above, steadfast; two are hidden in secret, one is seen.
