वार्त्रहत्याय शवसे पृतनाषाह्याय च । इन्द्र त्वा वर्तयामसि
For the slaying of the foe and for overcoming in battle, Indra, we set you in motion.
अर्वाचीनं सु ते मन उत चक्षुः शतक्रतो । इन्द्र कृण्वन्तु वाघतः
Let your mind and sight be turned toward us, O Indra of a hundred powers; let the prayers make you favorable.
नामानि ते शतक्रतो विश्वाभिर्गीर्भिरीमहे । इन्द्राभिमातिषाह्ये
We invoke all your names, O Indra of a hundred powers, with every hymn, for overcoming the adversary.
पुरुष्टुतस्य धामभिः शतेन महयामसि । इन्द्रस्य चर्षणीधृतः
With a hundred powers of the much-praised one, we magnify Indra, the supporter of the peoples.
इन्द्रं वृत्राय हन्तवे पुरुहूतमुप ब्रुवे । भरेषु वाजसातये
I call upon Indra, much-invoked, to slay the Vṛtra, for the gaining of strength in battles.
वाजेषु सासहिर्भव त्वामीमहे शतक्रतो । इन्द्र वृत्राय हन्तवे
Be victorious in contests, O hundred-powered one; we seek you, Indra, to slay the Vṛtra.
द्युम्नेषु पृतनाज्ये पृत्सुतूर्षु श्रवस्सु च । इन्द्र साक्ष्वाभिमातिषु
In glories, in the rush of battle, in contests for prizes and for fame, O Indra, be present in the struggles.
शुष्मिन्तमं न ऊतये द्युम्निनं पाहि जागृविम् । इन्द्र सोमं शतक्रतो
Protect the most invigorating, the glorious Soma for our help, O Indra, hundred-powered, ever-watchful.
इन्द्रियाणि शतक्रतो या ते जनेषु पञ्चसु । इन्द्र तानि त आ वृणे
The powers, O hundred-powered Indra, which are yours among the five peoples—those, Indra, I choose for you.
अगन्निन्द्र श्रवो बृहद्द्युम्नं दधिष्व दुष्टरम् । उत्ते शुष्मं तिरामसि
Indra, gain great fame; establish unconquerable glory; with your strength, overcome your foes.
अर्वावतो न आ गह्यथो शक्र परावतः । उ लोको यस्ते अद्रिव इन्द्रेह तत आ गहि
Come to us from near or far, O mighty one; wherever your dwelling is, O stone-armed Indra, come here.
अभि तष्टेव दीधया मनीषामत्यो न वाजी सुधुरो जिहानः । अभि प्रियाणि मर्मृशत्पराणि कवीँरिच्छामि संदृशे सुमेधाः
Like a craftsman with shining skill, the inspired one, strong as a well-yoked steed, advances; the wise, with clear vision, seek out the beloved and distant things.
इनोत पृच्छ जनिमा कवीनां मनोधृतः सुकृतस्तक्षत द्याम् । इमा उ ते प्रण्यो वर्धमाना मनोवाता अध नु धर्मणि ग्मन्
Now I ask about the origins of the sages, those upheld by mind, who skillfully fashioned the sky; these growing praises of yours, driven by thought, indeed move in the path of law.
नि षीमिदत्र गुह्या दधाना उत क्षत्राय रोदसी समञ्जन् । सं मात्राभिर्ममिरे येमुरुर्वी अन्तर्मही समृते धायसे धुः
Here they have placed the hidden things, and for sovereignty they have joined earth and heaven; with their measures they have encompassed, and the vast and wide ones have set themselves for the act of sustaining.
आतिष्ठन्तं परि विश्वे अभूषञ्छ्रियो वसानश्चरति स्वरोचिः । महत्तद्वृष्णो असुरस्य नामा विश्वरूपो अमृतानि तस्थौ
All adorned him as he stood forth, clothed in splendor, moving with radiant light; that is the great name of the mighty Asura—he, of manifold forms, stood among the immortals.
असूत पूर्वो वृषभो ज्यायानिमा अस्य शुरुधः सन्ति पूर्वीः । दिवो नपाता विदथस्य धीभिः क्षत्रं राजाना प्रदिवो दधाथे
The earlier bull begot the greater one; many are his wise thoughts from before; the sons of heaven, with wisdom at the assembly, you kings, have established dominion from the highest heaven.
त्रीणि राजाना विदथे पुरूणि परि विश्वानि भूषथः सदांसि । अपश्यमत्र मनसा जगन्वान्व्रते गन्धर्वाँ अपि वायुकेशान्
Three kings at the assembly, in many places, you have adorned all seats; here, moving with mind, they saw the Gandharvas in their vow, with wind-blown hair.
तदिन्न्वस्य वृषभस्य धेनोरा नामभिर्ममिरे सक्म्यं गोः । अन्यदन्यदसुर्यं वसाना नि मायिनो ममिरे रूपमस्मिन्
This, indeed, is the work of the bull and the cow; by their names they measured the course of the cow; each one, wearing different divine power, the magicians have measured out forms in this one.
तदिन्न्वस्य सवितुर्नकिर्मे हिरण्ययीममतिं यामशिश्रेत् । आ सुष्टुती रोदसी विश्वमिन्वे अपीव योषा जनिमानि वव्रे
This, indeed, is the work of Savitar; I do not desire the golden wisdom he would bestow; through excellent praise, earth and heaven, all, he pervades—the maiden has chosen her births.
युवं प्रत्नस्य साधथो महो यद्दैवी स्वस्तिः परि णः स्यातम् । गोपाजिह्वस्य तस्थुषो विरूपा विश्वे पश्यन्ति मायिनः कृतानि
You accomplish the ancient, great work, so that divine welfare may be around us; all see the varied deeds of the magician, of the one standing with the tongue of a cow.
शुनं हुवेम मघवानमिन्द्रमस्मिन्भरे नृतमं वाजसातौ । शृण्वन्तमुग्रमूतये समत्सु घ्नन्तं वृत्राणि संजितं धनानाम्
May we call upon generous Indra in this contest, the best hero for the prize; may he, fierce, listening for help in the battles, strike down the Vṛtras, the conqueror of riches.
इन्द्रं मतिर्हृद आ वच्यमानाच्छा पतिं स्तोमतष्टा जिगाति । या जागृविर्विदथे शस्यमानेन्द्र यत्ते जायते विद्धि तस्य
The thought arising from my heart seeks to praise Indra, the lord, with hymns shaped by devotion; she who is wakeful and praised in the assembly, O Indra, whatever is born of you, know that as yours.
दिवश्चिदा पूर्व्या जायमाना वि जागृविर्विदथे शस्यमाना । भद्रा वस्त्राण्यर्जुना वसाना सेयमस्मे सनजा पित्र्या धीः
Even from heaven, the ancient one is being born, ever watchful and praised in the assembly; wearing auspicious, bright garments, may this ancestral, eternal thought be with us.
यमा चिदत्र यमसूरसूत जिह्वाया अग्रं पतदा ह्यस्थात् । वपूंषि जाता मिथुना सचेते तमोहना तपुषो बुध्न एता
Here, even Yama, the son of the god, stood at the tip of the tongue as it fell; the two forms, born together, unite—these roots of power dispel darkness.
नकिरेषां निन्दिता मर्त्येषु ये अस्माकं पितरो गोषु योधाः । इन्द्र एषां दृंहिता माहिनावानुद्गोत्राणि ससृजे दंसनावान्
Among mortals, none reproach those of ours—our fathers—who were warriors for the cows; Indra, mighty in strength, established their lineages, creating them anew with his power.
सखा ह यत्र सखिभिर्नवग्वैरभिज्ञ्वा सत्वभिर्गा अनुग्मन् । सत्यं तदिन्द्रो दशभिर्दशग्वैः सूर्यं विवेद तमसि क्षियन्तम्
Where the friend, with new companions, followed the cows with knowledge and strength—this is true: Indra, with ten tens of cows, found the sun dwelling in darkness.
इन्द्रो मधु सम्भृतमुस्रियायां पद्वद्विवेद शफवन्नमे गोः । गुहा हितं गुह्यं गूळ्हमप्सु हस्ते दधे दक्षिणे दक्षिणावान्
Indra found the honey gathered in the cow, with hoof and dewlap, the food of the cow; hidden, secret, concealed in the waters, he placed it in his right hand, skillful in giving.
ज्योतिर्वृणीत तमसो विजानन्नारे स्याम दुरितादभीके । इमा गिरः सोमपाः सोमवृद्ध जुषस्वेन्द्र पुरुतमस्य कारोः
Choosing light, knowing the darkness, may we be far from misfortune; O Indra, drinker of Soma, grown strong with Soma, accept these songs of the many-voiced poet.
ज्योतिर्यज्ञाय रोदसी अनु ष्यादारे स्याम दुरितस्य भूरेः । भूरि चिद्धि तुजतो मर्त्यस्य सुपारासो वसवो बर्हणावत्
May light follow the sacrifice across heaven and earth; may we be far from abundant harm; for even the many-hostile mortal, O Vasus, your splendid protections are great.
शुनं हुवेम मघवानमिन्द्रमस्मिन्भरे नृतमं वाजसातौ । शृण्वन्तमुग्रमूतये समत्सु घ्नन्तं वृत्राणि संजितं धनानाम्
Let us call upon generous Indra in this contest, the foremost among men in the prize-winning; the mighty one who hears, for help in battles, who slays the foes and wins the wealth.
