प्रवाच्यं शश्वधा वीर्यं तदिन्द्रस्य कर्म यदहिं विवृश्चत् । वि वज्रेण परिषदो जघानायन्नापोऽयनमिच्छमानाः
This heroic deed of Indra must always be proclaimed, the act when he split the serpent; with the thunderbolt he struck down the encircling one, and the waters, desiring to flow, rushed onward.
एतद्वचो जरितर्मापि मृष्ठा आ यत्ते घोषानुत्तरा युगानि । उक्थेषु कारो प्रति नो जुषस्व मा नो नि कः पुरुषत्रा नमस्ते
Let not this word, O singer, be in vain for you, for your praises have reached through many generations; accept our hymn, O poet, do not let any manly strength turn away from your favor.
ओ षु स्वसारः कारवे शृणोत ययौ वो दूराद् अनसा रथेन । नि षू नमध्वम् भवता सुपारा अधोअक्षाः सिन्धवः स्रोत्याभिः
O sisters, listen to Kārava, who has come to you from afar with his cart and chariot; bow down, become easy to cross, O rivers, sink down beneath the axles with your flowing streams.
आ ते कारो शृणवामा वचाꣳसि ययाथ दूराद् अनसा रथेन । नि ते नꣳसै पीप्यानेव योषा मर्यायेव कन्या शश्वचै ते
To you, Kārava, let us listen to your words, as you have come from afar with your cart and chariot; let us bow down to you, swelling like a woman to her lover, like a maiden to a young man, always for you.
यद् अङ्ग त्वा भरताः सꣳतरेयुर् गव्यन् ग्राम इषित इन्द्रजूतः । अर्षाद् अह प्रसवः सर्गतक्त आ वो वृणे सुमतिꣳ यज्ञियानाम्
If, O Indra-guided one, the Bharatas should cross over with their cattle, with the troop impelled, then let the current, set in motion, flow forth; I choose for you the good favor of those worthy of sacrifice.
अतारिषुर् भरता गव्यवः सम् अभक्त विप्रः सुमतिꣳ नदीनाम् । प्र पिन्वध्वम् इषयन्तीः सुराधा आ वक्षणाः पृणध्वꣳ यात शीभम्
The Bharatas have crossed with their cattle; the inspired one has shared the good favor of the rivers. Flow forth, you who are abundant, granting boons; fill your channels, go in prosperity.
उद् व ऊर्मिः शम्या हन्त्व् आपो योक्त्राणि मुञ्चत । मादुष्कृतौ व्येनसाघ्न्यौ शूनम् आरताम्
Let the wave rise up for you with gentleness; release the bonds, O waters. Do not, by your force, cause harm or injury; let there be no misfortune or distress.
इन्द्रः पूर्भिदातिरद्दासमर्कैर्विदद्वसुर्दयमानो वि शत्रून् । ब्रह्मजूतस्तन्वा वावृधानो भूरिदात्र आपृणद्रोदसी उभे
Indra, breaker of barriers, has torn open the fortress of the Dasa with his might; granting wealth, he, compassionate, scattered the enemies. Guided by prayer, growing in strength, the generous one filled both heaven and earth.
मखस्य ते तविषस्य प्र जूतिमियर्मि वाचममृताय भूषन् । इन्द्र क्षितीनामसि मानुषीणां विशां दैवीनामुत पूर्वयावा
For your sacrifice and power, I send forth praise, adorned for immortality. Indra, you are lord among human peoples, among divine hosts, and also among those who came before.
इन्द्रो वृत्रमवृणोच्छर्धनीतिः प्र मायिनाममिनाद्वर्पणीतिः । अहन्व्यंसमुशधग्वनेष्वाविर्धेना अकृणोद्राम्याणाम्
Indra chose to shatter Vritra, the destroyer; he struck down the deceivers, the arrogant. He slew the obstructers in the forests, and revealed the cows for the seekers.
इन्द्रः स्वर्षा जनयन्नहानि जिगायोशिग्भिः पृतना अभिष्टिः । प्रारोचयन्मनवे केतुमह्नामविन्दज्ज्योतिर्बृहते रणाय
Indra, shining, brought forth the days, conquering with his weapons the hostile armies. He made manifest the sign for Manu, the mighty, and found light for the great battle.
इन्द्रस्तुजो बर्हणा आ विवेश नृवद्दधानो नर्या पुरूणि । अचेतयद्धिय इमा जरित्रे प्रेमं वर्णमतिरच्छुक्रमासाम्
Indra entered the praises and the offerings, establishing many heroic deeds for men. He awakened these thoughts for the worshipper, and bestowed the radiant, pure form upon them.
महो महानि पनयन्त्यस्येन्द्रस्य कर्म सुकृता पुरूणि । वृजनेन वृजिनान्सं पिपेष मायाभिर्दस्यूँरभिभूत्योजाः
The great deeds of mighty Indra are many and splendid; his works are abundant. By force he crushed the wicked, and with his power overcame the tricksters and hostile ones.
युधेन्द्रो मह्ना वरिवश्चकार देवेभ्यः सत्पतिश्चर्षणिप्राः । विवस्वतः सदने अस्य तानि विप्रा उक्थेभिः कवयो गृणन्ति
Indra, in battle, by his greatness, made a path for the gods, the true lord, protector of people. In the house of Vivasvat, the sages praise those deeds with hymns and songs.
सत्रासाहं वरेण्यं सहोदां ससवांसं स्वरपश्च देवीः । ससान यः पृथिवीं द्यामुतेमामिन्द्रं मदन्त्यनु धीरणासः
The mighty, worthy Indra, the companion in strength, the lord of light, has subdued the earth and the heavens; the wise, inspired, rejoice in Indra.
ससानात्याँ उत सूर्यं ससानेन्द्रः ससान पुरुभोजसं गाम् । हिरण्ययमुत भोगं ससान हत्वी दस्यून्प्रार्यं वर्णमावत्
He subdued the waters, and also the sun; Indra subdued the cow, the giver of much enjoyment. He subdued the golden wealth, and after slaying the enemies, brought forth the noble form.
इन्द्र ओषधीरसनोदहानि वनस्पतीँरसनोदन्तरिक्षम् । बिभेद वलं नुनुदे विवाचोऽथाभवद्दमिताभिक्रतूनाम्
Indra stirred the plants and the days, stirred the trees and the midspace. He broke the barrier, released the speech; thus he became the restrainer of the arrogant.
शुनं हुवेम मघवानमिन्द्रमस्मिन्भरे नृतमं वाजसातौ । शृण्वन्तमुग्रमूतये समत्सु घ्नन्तं वृत्राणि संजितं धनानाम्
Let us call upon Indra, the generous, the best among men, in this battle for the prize. May he, fierce, listening for aid in the conflicts, slay the foes and win the wealth.
तिष्ठा हरी रथ आ युज्यमाना याहि वायुर्न नियुतो नो अच्छ । पिबास्यन्धो अभिसृष्टो अस्मे इन्द्र स्वाहा ररिमा ते मदाय
Stand ready, horses, yoked to the chariot; come as the wind, bringing us near. Drink the pressed Soma offered here, Indra, with the cry of 'svaha', for our delight.
उपाजिरा पुरुहूताय सप्ती हरी रथस्य धूर्ष्वा युनज्मि । द्रवद्यथा सम्भृतं विश्वतश्चिदुपेमं यज्ञमा वहात इन्द्रम्
I harness the swift horses to the chariot for the much-invoked one; let them run, gathering from all sides, and bring Indra to this sacrifice.
उपो नयस्व वृषणा तपुष्पोतेमव त्वं वृषभ स्वधावः । ग्रसेतामश्वा वि मुचेह शोणा दिवेदिवे सदृशीरद्धि धानाः
Lead the strong, radiant horses here; you, mighty one, are self-sustaining. Let the red steeds graze and be released; day by day, their actions are ever alike.
ब्रह्मणा ते ब्रह्मयुजा युनज्मि हरी सखाया सधमाद आशू । स्थिरं रथं सुखमिन्द्राधितिष्ठन्प्रजानन्विद्वाँ उप याहि सोमम्
With prayer, I yoke your prayer-guided horses, companions at the shared feast, swift. Mount the firm, pleasant chariot, Indra, knowing and wise, and come to the Soma.
मा ते हरी वृषणा वीतपृष्ठा नि रीरमन्यजमानासो अन्ये । अत्यायाहि शश्वतो वयं तेऽरं सुतेभिः कृणवाम सोमैः
Let not your strong, broad-backed horses be held back by other worshippers. Come swiftly; may we always bring you delight with the pressed Somas.
तवायं सोमस्त्वमेह्यर्वाङ्छश्वत्तमं सुमना अस्य पाहि । अस्मिन्यज्ञे बर्हिष्या निषद्या दधिष्वेमं जठर इन्दुमिन्द्र
This Soma is for you; come near, Indra, most knowing, with a good mind, and drink. In this sacrifice, seated on the sacred grass, place this pressed juice in your belly.
स्तीर्णं ते बर्हिः सुत इन्द्र सोमः कृता धाना अत्तवे ते हरिभ्याम् । तदोकसे पुरुशाकाय वृष्णे मरुत्वते तुभ्यं राता हवींषि
The sacred grass is spread for you, Indra; the Soma is pressed. The offerings are prepared for you and your horses. To you, mighty, many-formed, accompanied by the Maruts, these oblations are given.
इमं नरः पर्वतास्तुभ्यमापः समिन्द्र गोभिर्मधुमन्तमक्रन् । तस्यागत्या सुमना ऋष्व पाहि प्रजानन्विद्वान्पथ्या अनु स्वाः
O men, for you the waters have approached the mountains; with Indra, they have made the honeyed milk with cows. With his coming, O lofty one, guard us graciously, knowing and wise, following the proper paths.
याँ आभजो मरुत इन्द्र सोमे ये त्वामवर्धन्नभवन्गणस्ते । तेभिरेतं सजोषा वावशानोऽग्नेः पिब जिह्वया सोममिन्द्र
Those who, O Indra, Maruts, and Soma, have strengthened you, who became your companions—together with them, eager, drink this Soma with Agni's tongue, O Indra.
इन्द्र पिब स्वधया चित्सुतस्याग्नेर्वा पाहि जिह्वया यजत्र । अध्वर्योर्वा प्रयतं शक्र हस्ताद्धोतुर्वा यज्ञं हविषो जुषस्व
Indra, drink with delight the pressed Soma, or drink it with Agni's tongue, O worthy of worship; or accept the sacrifice from the hands of the priest, O mighty one, or from the hotar, enjoy the offerings of the ritual.
शुनं हुवेम मघवानमिन्द्रमस्मिन्भरे नृतमं वाजसातौ । शृण्वन्तमुग्रमूतये समत्सु घ्नन्तं वृत्राणि संजितं धनानाम्
Let us call upon Indra, the generous, in this contest, the foremost among men in winning prizes; the mighty one who listens for help in battles, who slays the foes, who conquers wealth.
इमामू षु प्रभृतिं सातये धाः शश्वच्छश्वदूतिभिर्यादमानः । सुतेसुते वावृधे वर्धनेभिर्यः कर्मभिर्महद्भिः सुश्रुतो भूत्
Set forth this offering for gain, always, always striving with messengers; he has grown strong in every pressing, with acts of greatness, he has become renowned.
