स्वस्तये वाजिभिश्च प्रणेतः सं यन्महीरिष आसत्सि पूर्वीः । रायो वन्तारो बृहतः स्यामास्मे अस्तु भग इन्द्र प्रजावान्
For well-being and with swift steeds, lead us forth, as you have settled many ancient blessings. May we be receivers of great wealth; let Indra grant us fortune and offspring.
आ नो भर भगमिन्द्र द्युमन्तं नि ते देष्णस्य धीमहि प्ररेके । ऊर्व इव पप्रथे कामो अस्मे तमा पृण वसुपते वसूनाम्
Bring us, Indra, radiant fortune; we strive for your generous favor. Like a broad field, let our desire expand; fulfill it, Lord of Wealth, with riches among the wealthy.
इमं कामं मन्दया गोभिरश्वैश्चन्द्रवता राधसा पप्रथश्च । स्वर्यवो मतिभिस्तुभ्यं विप्रा इन्द्राय वाहः कुशिकासो अक्रन्
Satisfy this desire with cows and horses, with shining gifts, and spread it wide. The wise Kuśikas, with their thoughts, have made offerings to you, Indra, bearer of the sacred.
आ नो गोत्रा दर्दृहि गोपते गाः समस्मभ्यं सनयो यन्तु वाजाः । दिवक्षा असि वृषभ सत्यशुष्मोऽस्मभ्यं सु मघवन्बोधि गोदाः
Break open the enclosures for us, Lord of Cattle, let the cows come to us, let the prizes reach us. You are the bull, true in strength, dwelling in heaven; grant us, Maghavan, knowledge of the cows.
शुनं हुवेम मघवानमिन्द्रमस्मिन्भरे नृतमं वाजसातौ । शृण्वन्तमुग्रमूतये समत्सु घ्नन्तं वृत्राणि संजितं धनानाम्
Let us call upon Maghavan Indra in this contest, the foremost among men, winner of prizes. Listening and fierce for help in battles, slayer of foes, conqueror of wealth.
शासद्वह्निर्दुहितुर्नप्त्यं गाद्विद्वाँ ऋतस्य दीधितिं सपर्यन् । पिता यत्र दुहितुः सेकमृञ्जन्सं शग्म्येन मनसा दधन्वे
The fire commands the daughter's offspring, knowing, he honors the light of truth. Where the father cleanses the daughter's stream, he establishes it with a strong mind.
न जामये तान्वो रिक्थमारैक्चकार गर्भं सनितुर्निधानम् । यदी मातरो जनयन्त वह्निमन्यः कर्ता सुकृतोरन्य ऋन्धन्
He did not divide the inheritance for the wife; he made the embryo, the treasure of the giver. When the mothers gave birth to the fire, one was the maker of good, another the kindler.
अग्निर्जज्ञे जुह्वा रेजमानो महस्पुत्राँ अरुषस्य प्रयक्षे । महान्गर्भो मह्या जातमेषां मही प्रवृद्धर्यश्वस्य यज्ञैः
Agni was born, shining with the ladle, son of greatness, visible to the red one. The great embryo, born of the mighty, grew vast through the sacrifices of the swift horse.
अभि जैत्रीरसचन्त स्पृधानं महि ज्योतिस्तमसो निरजानन् । तं जानतीः प्रत्युदायन्नुषासः पतिर्गवामभवदेक इन्द्रः
Victorious ones approached the contest, they brought forth great light, dispelling darkness. The dawns, knowing him, advanced to meet him; Indra became the sole lord of the cows.
वीळौ सतीरभि धीरा अतृन्दन्प्राचाहिन्वन्मनसा सप्त विप्राः । विश्वामविन्दन्पथ्यामृतस्य प्रजानन्नित्ता नमसा विवेश
Being firm, the wise pressed onward; seven sages guided with their minds. They found all paths of truth, knowing, they entered with reverence.
विदद्यदी सरमा रुग्णमद्रेर्महि पाथः पूर्व्यं सध्र्यक्कः । अग्रं नयत्सुपद्यक्षराणामच्छा रवं प्रथमा जानती गात्
Saramā discovered the broken path of the mountain, the ancient way, accompanied by her kin. She led the way for the well-footed ones, first knowing, she sang forth the sound.
अगच्छदु विप्रतमः सखीयन्नसूदयत्सुकृते गर्भमद्रिः । ससान मर्यो युवभिर्मखस्यन्नथाभवदङ्गिराः सद्यो अर्चन्
The most inspired went as a friend, the mountain released the embryo for the doer of good. The youthful hero arranged the offering, then the Angiras shone forth immediately.
सतःसतः प्रतिमानं पुरोभूर्विश्वा वेद जनिमा हन्ति शुष्णम् । प्र णो दिवः पदवीर्गव्युरर्चन्सखा सखीँरमुञ्चन्निरवद्यात्
He, ever existent, is the model for the former; he knows all origins, he slays Śuṣṇa. He praised the paths of heaven for us, seeking cows, releasing the friend from blame.
नि गव्यता मनसा सेदुरर्कैः कृण्वानासो अमृतत्वाय गातुम् । इदं चिन्नु सदनं भूर्येषां येन मासाँ असिषासन्नृतेन
With longing for cows, they pressed forward with their minds, making hymns for immortality. This indeed is the abode of their abundance, by which they served the months with truth.
सम्पश्यमाना अमदन्नभि स्वं पयः प्रत्नस्य रेतसो दुघानाः । वि रोदसी अतपद्घोष एषां जाते निष्ठामदधुर्गोषु वीरान्
Seeing, they rejoiced, approaching their own; the ancient ones, milkers of the seed, gave forth milk. The two worlds echoed with their sound; at birth, the cows established the heroes in their stalls.
स जातेभिर्वृत्रहा सेदु हव्यैरुदुस्रिया असृजदिन्द्रो अर्कैः । उरूच्यस्मै घृतवद्भरन्ती मधु स्वाद्म दुदुहे जेन्या गौः
He, slayer of Vṛtra, sat with offerings among the newborn; Indra released the cows with hymns. Broad for him, bearing ghee, the desirable cow gave sweet honeyed milk.
पित्रे चिच्चक्रुः सदनं समस्मै महि त्विषीमत्सुकृतो वि हि ख्यन् । विष्कभ्नन्त स्कम्भनेना जनित्री आसीना ऊर्ध्वं रभसं वि मिन्वन्
Even for the Father they made a dwelling, vast and radiant, the skilled ones indeed proclaimed it; the mothers, supporting with the support, sat measuring upwards with force.
मही यदि धिषणा शिश्नथे धात्सद्योवृधं विभ्वं रोदस्योः । गिरो यस्मिन्ननवद्याः समीचीर्विश्वा इन्द्राय तविषीरनुत्ताः
When the great intelligence established the virile, ever-growing, all-pervading one between heaven and earth, in whom blameless, harmonious songs, all-powerful, are gathered for Indra, unassailable.
मह्या ते सख्यं वश्मि शक्तीरा वृत्रघ्ने नियुतो यन्ति पूर्वीः । महि स्तोत्रमव आगन्म सूरेरस्माकं सु मघवन्बोधि गोपाः
I seek your friendship, mighty one; O slayer of Vṛtra, your many bands advance; we have come to the great praise of the sun—be our protector, O generous one, be mindful of us.
महि क्षेत्रं पुरु श्चन्द्रं विविद्वानादित्सखिभ्यश्चरथं समैरत् । इन्द्रो नृभिरजनद्दीद्यानः साकं सूर्यमुषसं गातुमग्निम्
Knowing the vast, many-splendored field, he gave it, distributing the chariot to his companions equally; Indra, shining among men, generated together the sun, dawn, and fire for the path.
अपश्चिदेष विभ्वो दमूनाः प्र सध्रीचीरसृजद्विश्वश्चन्द्राः । मध्वः पुनानाः कविभिः पवित्रैर्द्युभिर्हिन्वन्त्यक्तुभिर्धनुत्रीः
Even those who were behind, O all-pervading, O householder, you set forth together, all shining; purifying the honey with the poets through the filters, with the days they fashion the gifts with acts.
अनु कृष्णे वसुधिती जिहाते उभे सूर्यस्य मंहना यजत्रे । परि यत्ते महिमानं वृजध्यै सखाय इन्द्र काम्या ऋजिप्याः
After the dark one, the earth's riches are revealed; both, by the greatness of the sun, are to be worshipped; around your greatness, O Indra, the desired, the praiseworthy, your friends strive to encompass.
पतिर्भव वृत्रहन्सूनृतानां गिरां विश्वायुर्वृषभो वयोधाः । आ नो गहि सख्येभिः शिवेभिर्महान्महीभिरूतिभिः सरण्यन्
Be the lord, O slayer of Vṛtra, of true words, of all speech, the bull, the bestower of strength; come to us with auspicious friendships, great one, with mighty, generous aids, O swift one.
तमङ्गिरस्वन्नमसा सपर्यन्नव्यं कृणोमि सन्यसे पुराजाम् । द्रुहो वि याहि बहुला अदेवीः स्वश्च नो मघवन्सातये धाः
Honoring you, O Angiras, with reverence, I make a new hymn for the ancient one; drive away the abundant, godless deceits, and, O generous one, place your own for our gain.
मिहः पावकाः प्रतता अभूवन्स्वस्ति नः पिपृहि पारमासाम् । इन्द्र त्वं रथिरः पाहि नो रिषो मक्षूमक्षू कृणुहि गोजितो नः
The shining rains have spread forth; grant us well-being, protect us from these perils; Indra, you are the charioteer—guard us from harm, quickly, quickly make us victorious in cattle.
अदेदिष्ट वृत्रहा गोपतिर्गा अन्तः कृष्णाँ अरुषैर्धामभिर्गात् । प्र सूनृता दिशमान ऋतेन दुरश्च विश्वा अवृणोदप स्वाः
The slayer of Vṛtra, the protector of cattle, has approached; within the dark ones, he went with the red lights; sending forth true words, by truth, he opened all the difficult places, and the good ones.
शुनं हुवेम मघवानमिन्द्रमस्मिन्भरे नृतमं वाजसातौ । शृण्वन्तमुग्रमूतये समत्सु घ्नन्तं वृत्राणि संजितं धनानाम्
Let us call upon generous Indra in this contest, the best of men in the prize-winning; the mighty one who hears, for help in battles, who slays the Vṛtras, the conqueror of riches.
इन्द्र सोमं सोमपते पिबेमं माध्यंदिनं सवनं चारु यत्ते । प्रप्रुथ्या शिप्रे मघवन्नृजीषिन्विमुच्या हरी इह मादयस्व
Indra, drink this Soma, O lord of Soma, at this midday pressing, which is delightful to you; O generous, mighty one, with loosened hair, rejoice here, releasing your steeds.
गवाशिरं मन्थिनमिन्द्र शुक्रं पिबा सोमं ररिमा ते मदाय । ब्रह्मकृता मारुतेना गणेन सजोषा रुद्रैस्तृपदा वृषस्व
Drink the bright, churned Soma, Indra, with the cow's head, which we have prepared for your exhilaration; with the company of those who perform the sacred utterance, with the Maruts, together with the Rudras, be strong in threefold measure.
ये ते शुष्मं ये तविषीमवर्धन्नर्चन्त इन्द्र मरुतस्त ओजः । माध्यंदिने सवने वज्रहस्त पिबा रुद्रेभिः सगणः सुशिप्र
Those who increased your power, your might, O Indra, the Maruts who magnified your strength; at the midday pressing, O thunderer, drink with the Rudras, with your troop, O beautiful-haired one.
