We, the mighty, kindle you, O mighty Agni, with mighty ones; shine forth greatly.
Agni, accept our offering, the sacrificial cake, O knower of births; at the morning pressing, O wise, with prayer.
O Agni, the sacrificial cake, baked and prepared, is for you; O youngest one, accept it with favor.
Agni, come to the sacrificial cake offered to you, hidden through the day, O son of strength, set in the rite.
At the midday pressing, O knower of all births, O sage, accept here the sacrificial cake; O Agni, the wise do not diminish your share in the assemblies.
Agni, at the third pressing, you indeed are called to the sacrificial cake, offered to the son of strength; then, with insight, place the rich rite among the immortal gods, ever wakeful.
Agni, ever-growing, O knower of all births, accept the sacrificial cake, the offering hidden through the day.
Here is the churning stick, here is the act of generation accomplished; bring forth this mistress of the house, let us churn Agni as in former times.
Placed between the two pieces of wood, O knower of all births, like an embryo well cherished in pregnant women, Agni is to be praised day by day by the wakeful, by men with offerings.
With understanding, bring forth the upright one; swiftly, the vigorous one is born; the reddish pillar, the shining strength, the son of Ilā is generated in the path.
At the place of Ilā, at the navel of earth, O knower of all births, we place you, Agni, for the offering, for the sacrificial cake.
Men churn the sage, the all-wise, the immortal, the well-formed; you men generate Agni, the sign of sacrifice, the first, the gracious, in the forefront.
When they churn him with their arms, he shines forth like a swift, red horse in the woods; like the bright, unrestrained course of the Aśvins, he encircles the grass, burning it from the stone.
Born, Agni shines, discerning, strong, inspired, praised by sages, liberal; whom the gods have set in the rites as worthy of praise, all-knowing, bearer of offerings.
Sit down, O Hotar, in your own place, discerning; seat the sacrifice in the goodly womb; O godly one, worship the gods with offering, O Agni, grant strength to the great worshipper.
Make the smoke strong, O friends, do not falter, strive for the prize; this Agni, the slayer of foes, the mighty one, by whom the gods overcame the Dasyus.
This is your seat, O ritual one, from which you were born and shone forth; knowing that, O Agni, sit here and increase our songs.
He is called the protector of the body, the divine embryo; when he is born, he becomes the desire of men; when Mātariśvan measured him, in the mother, the outpouring of the wind became manifest in the course.
Well churned, churned out, well placed, set down, the sage; O Agni, perform the right rites, worship the gods for the worshipper.
Mortals have generated the immortal, the tireless, the swift, the one with hidden jaws; the ten sisters, together, approach the born man, the vigorous one.
The sevenfold Hotar shone forth from ancient times, when he burned in the mother's lap, in the udder. He does not close his eyes, the bountiful one, day by day, since he was born from the belly of the mighty one.
Armed against foes, like the Maruts in their advance, the first-born of the sacred order, all know this. The radiant prayer, the Kuśikas have set forth; each one, in his own house, has kindled Agni.
As today, in this sacrifice, we have chosen you, wise Hotar, with devotion, come here. With what is firm, by what is firm, and with the best offerings, knowing, understanding, approach the Soma.
Your friends, O Soma-lover, desire you; they press Soma and prepare the offerings. They endure the curses of men; O Indra, apart from you, no one is truly wise.
Not even the farthest realms are distant from you; come forth, O Lord of the Bay Steeds, with your horses. For the strong bull these libations are prepared, the pressing stones are yoked, the fire is kindled.
Indra, of beautiful beard, the generous, the mighty, leader of great hosts, powerful in deeds—when you, fierce one, are restrained among mortals, where, O bull, are your heroic powers?
For you alone, indeed, shake the unshaken; you roam, slaying the Vṛtras. Heaven and earth, and the mountains, stand firm as if by your law, as by a measuring rod.
O much-invoked, by your fame alone you have shattered the stronghold, being the slayer of Vṛtra. Even these two vast worlds, O Indra, you have grasped, O generous one, as if they were your own possessions.
Let your bay steeds, O Indra, be released down the slope; let your thunderbolt go forth, crushing the foes. Strike down those who come from all directions, make all truth prevail, let what is false be destroyed.
To whom you, O mortal, have given life, even the unoffered portion becomes his household share. Blessed is your favor, Indra, rich in ghee; O much-invoked, your bounty is a thousandfold.
