विश्पतिं यह्वमतिथिं नरः सदा यन्तारं धीनामुशिजं च वाघताम् । अध्वराणां चेतनं जातवेदसं प्र शंसन्ति नमसा जूतिभिर्वृधे
The men always praise the lord of the people, the youthful guest, the guide of thoughts, the swift one of the worshippers. They proclaim the knower of births, the consciousness of the sacrifices, with reverence and offerings, for increase.
विभावा देवः सुरणः परि क्षितीरग्निर्बभूव शवसा सुमद्रथः । तस्य व्रतानि भूरिपोषिणो वयमुप भूषेम दम आ सुवृक्तिभिः
The god, Agni, the wise, the beneficent, has encompassed the lands with his might, possessing a splendid chariot. May we approach his many nourishing vows in the household, with well-spoken words.
वैश्वानर तव धामान्या चके येभिः स्वर्विदभवो विचक्षण । जात आपृणो भुवनानि रोदसी अग्ने ता विश्वा परिभूरसि त्मना
Vaiśvānara, your abodes have been established, by which you became the knower of light, the discerning one. Born, you fill the worlds, heaven and earth; Agni, you encompass all with your own self.
वैश्वानरस्य दंसनाभ्यो बृहदरिणादेकः स्वपस्यया कविः । उभा पितरा महयन्नजायताग्निर्द्यावापृथिवी भूरिरेतसा
From the teeth of Vaiśvānara, the great, the poet, unique in his own power, is born. Agni, honoring both parents, heaven and earth, is born with abundant seed.
समित्समित्सुमना बोध्यस्मे शुचाशुचा सुमतिं रासि वस्वः । आ देव देवान्यजथाय वक्षि सखा सखीन्सुमना यक्ष्यग्ने
May you awaken for us, ever mindful, ever pure; grant us the favor of wealth. Bring the gods for the sacrifice, O friend, bring your friends, O Agni, with a gracious mind.
यं देवासस्त्रिरहन्नायजन्ते दिवेदिवे वरुणो मित्रो अग्निः । सेमं यज्ञं मधुमन्तं कृधी नस्तनूनपाद्घृतयोनिं विधन्तम्
Whom the gods thrice daily worship—Varuṇa, Mitra, Agni—make this sacrifice sweet for us, O Tanūnapāt, established in the ghee-born altar.
प्र दीधितिर्विश्ववारा जिगाति होतारमिळः प्रथमं यजध्यै । अच्छा नमोभिर्वृषभं वन्दध्यै स देवान्यक्षदिषितो यजीयान्
The radiant one, all-blessing, advances; the first priest, Iḻa, for the sacrifice. With reverence, let us praise the bull; he, inspired, worships the gods, most worthy of sacrifice.
ऊर्ध्वो वां गातुरध्वरे अकार्यूर्ध्वा शोचींषि प्रस्थिता रजांसि । दिवो वा नाभा न्यसादि होता स्तृणीमहि देवव्यचा वि बर्हिः
Upright is your path at the sacrifice, upright your flames, spreading through the spaces. The priest is set at the navel of heaven; let us spread the sacred grass, the divine covering, for the gods.
सप्त होत्राणि मनसा वृणाना इन्वन्तो विश्वं प्रति यन्नृतेन । नृपेशसो विदथेषु प्र जाता अभीमं यज्ञं वि चरन्त पूर्वीः
Choosing the seven priests with mind, invoking all with truth, adorned in the assemblies; born in the gatherings, they move through the ancient sacrifices.
आ भन्दमाने उषसा उपाके उत स्मयेते तन्वा विरूपे । यथा नो मित्रो वरुणो जुजोषदिन्द्रो मरुत्वाँ उत वा महोभिः
At dawn, the two sisters approach, displaying their varied forms. May Mitra, Varuṇa, Indra with the Maruts, and others, delight in us with their greatness.
दैव्या होतारा प्रथमा न्यृञ्जे सप्त पृक्षासः स्वधया मदन्ति । ऋतं शंसन्त ऋतमित्त आहुरनु व्रतं व्रतपा दीध्यानाः
The divine first priests are arranged, the seven singers rejoice in their own nature. They proclaim truth, call it truth, and follow the vow, shining as guardians of the vow.
आ भारती भारतीभिः सजोषा इळा देवैर्मनुष्येभिरग्निः । सरस्वती सारस्वतेभिरर्वाक्तिस्रो देवीर्बर्हिरेदं सदन्तु
May Bhāratī, with the Bhāratīs, united, Iḻā with the gods and men, Agni; Sarasvatī with the Sarasvats, come. May these goddesses sit upon this sacred grass.
तन्नस्तुरीपमध पोषयित्नु देव त्वष्टर्वि रराणः स्यस्व । यतो वीरः कर्मण्यः सुदक्षो युक्तग्रावा जायते देवकामः
May the nourishing god Tvaṣṭar, who grants abundance, be gracious to us; from him is born the heroic, skillful, and well-equipped one, eager for the gods, who acts with excellence.
वनस्पतेऽव सृजोप देवानग्निर्हविः शमिता सूदयाति । सेदु होता सत्यतरो यजाति यथा देवानां जनिमानि वेद
Like a tree, release the offering to the gods; Agni, the pacifier, prepares the oblation. Thus the true Hotar worships, knowing the origins of the gods.
आ याह्यग्ने समिधानो अर्वाङिन्द्रेण देवैः सरथं तुरेभिः । बर्हिर्न आस्तामदितिः सुपुत्रा स्वाहा देवा अमृता मादयन्ताम्
Come near, O Agni, kindled, together with Indra and the gods, with swift companions; let Aditi and her good sons be seated on the sacred grass; may the immortal gods rejoice with the invocation.
प्रत्यग्निरुषसश्चेकितानोऽबोधि विप्रः पदवीः कवीनाम्। पृथुपाजा देवयद्भिः समिद्धोऽप द्वारा तमसो वह्निरावः
Agni, awakened and aware of the paths of the sages, has arisen; the priest, broad-footed and shining with divine radiance, dispels the doors of darkness with his fire.
प्रेद्वग्निर्वावृधे स्तोमेभिर्गीर्भिः स्तोतॄणां नमस्य उक्थैः। पूर्वीर्ऋतस्य संदृशश्चकानः सं दूतो अद्यौदुषसो विरोके
Agni has grown strong through praises, songs, and hymns of the worshippers; perceiving the many forms of truth, today the messenger shines forth at the dawn.
अधाय्यग्निर्मानुषीषु विक्ष्वपां गर्भो मित्र ऋतेन साधन्। आ हर्यतो यजतः सान्वस्थादभूदु विप्रो हव्यो मतीनाम्
Then Agni, the seed among men, established by Mitra through truth, has arisen from the worshipper's offering; the sage, worthy of invocation, has become the support of thoughts.
मित्रो अग्निर्भवति यत्समिद्धो मित्रो होता वरुणो जातवेदाः। मित्रो अध्वर्युरिषिरो दमूना मित्रः सिन्धूनामुत पर्वतानाम्
Agni becomes Mitra when kindled; Mitra is the Hotar, Varuṇa is the knower of births; Mitra is the Adhvaryu, the inspired, the householder; Mitra is also of the rivers and the mountains.
पाति प्रियं रिपो अग्रं पदं वेः पाति यह्वश्चरणं सूर्यस्य। पाति नाभा सप्तशीर्षाणमग्निः पाति देवानामुपमादमृष्वः
He protects the beloved, the foremost path of the horse; he guards the swift course of the sun; Agni preserves the navel of the seven-headed, and the lofty likeness of the gods.
ऋभुश्चक्र ईड्यं चारु नाम विश्वानि देवो वयुनानि विद्वान्। ससस्य चर्म घृतवत्पदं वेस्तदिदग्नी रक्षत्यप्रयुच्छन्
The Ribhus fashioned the worthy, beautiful name; the god, knowing all skills, made every form; he wraps the skin, the ghee-filled footstep; thus Agni protects, never ceasing.
आ योनिमग्निर्घृतवन्तमस्थात्पृथुप्रगाणमुशन्तमुशानः। दीद्यानः शुचिर्ऋष्वः पावकः पुनःपुनर्मातरा नव्यसी कः
Agni has entered the ghee-filled womb, broad-spreading, shining, and radiant; pure, lofty, and bright, again and again he is renewed by his mothers.
सद्यो जात ओषधीभिर्ववक्षे यदी वर्धन्ति प्रस्वो घृतेन। आप इव प्रवता शुम्भमाना उरुष्यदग्निः पित्रोरुपस्थे
Newborn, he grows with the plants, when they flourish, nourished by ghee; like waters flowing, shining, Agni rests in the lap of his parents.
उदु ष्टुतः समिधा यह्वो अद्यौद्वर्ष्मन्दिवो अधि नाभा पृथिव्याः। मित्रो अग्निरीड्यो मातरिश्वा दूतो वक्षद्यजथाय देवान्
Rising, praised, kindled, the swift one today shines from the navel of heaven and earth; Mitra, Agni, the worthy, Mātariśvan, the messenger, will carry the offering to the gods.
उदस्तम्भीत्समिधा नाकमृष्वोऽग्निर्भवन्नुत्तमो रोचनानाम्। यदी भृगुभ्यः परि मातरिश्वा गुहा सन्तं हव्यवाहं समीधे
He has upheld the high heaven, kindled, Agni became the highest of the shining realms; when Mātariśvan brought the hidden carrier of offerings to the Bhṛgus, he was kindled.
इळामग्ने पुरुदंसं सनिं गोः शश्वत्तमं हवमानाय साध। स्यान्नः सूनुस्तनयो विजावाग्ने सा ते सुमतिर्भूत्वस्मे
Grant us, Agni, abundant wealth, the lasting possession of cows, for the one who invokes you; may our son be victorious and wise, O Agni, and may your favor be with us.
प्र कारवो मनना वच्यमाना देवद्रीचीं नयत देवयन्तः । दक्षिणावाड्वाजिनी प्राच्येति हविर्भरन्त्यग्नये घृताची
Let the singers, reflecting, speak forth, leading the divine hymn with devotion; the givers of gifts, rich in offerings, bring the oblation to Agni, adorned with ghee.
आ रोदसी अपृणा जायमान उत प्र रिक्था अध नु प्रयज्यो । दिवश्चिदग्ने महिना पृथिव्या वच्यन्तां ते वह्नयः सप्तजिह्वाः
He fills the two worlds as he is born; and now the gifts are brought, the offering is ready; even in heaven, Agni, by your greatness and on earth, let your seven-tongued fires be spoken of.
द्यौश्च त्वा पृथिवी यज्ञियासो नि होतारं सादयन्ते दमाय । यदी विशो मानुषीर्देवयन्तीः प्रयस्वतीरीळते शुक्रमर्चिः
Heaven and earth, worthy of sacrifice, seat you as the Hotar in the house; when the peoples, devoted, invoke your shining flame with abundant offerings.
महान्सधस्थे ध्रुव आ निषत्तोऽन्तर्द्यावा माहिने हर्यमाणः । आस्क्रे सपत्नी अजरे अमृक्ते सबर्दुघे उरुगायस्य धेनू
Great, firmly seated in the abode, you shine between heaven and earth, O radiant one; the two companions, ageless and unblemished, the nourishing cows of wide praise.
