विश्वे देवास आ गत शृणुता म इमं हवम् । एदं बर्हिर्नि षीदत
All the gods, come here and listen to this invocation; sit upon this sacred grass.
तीव्रो वो मधुमाँ अयं शुनहोत्रेषु मत्सरः । एतं पिबत काम्यम्
This strong, honey-sweet offering is prepared for you in the rites of Śunahotra; drink this desirable libation.
इन्द्रज्येष्ठा मरुद्गणा देवासः पूषरातयः । विश्वे मम श्रुता हवम्
Gods led by Indra and the Maruts, with Pūṣan as benefactor, all of you, listen to my invocation.
अम्बितमे नदीतमे देवितमे सरस्वति । अप्रशस्ता इव स्मसि प्रशस्तिमम्ब नस्कृधि
Most motherly, most riverly, most divine Sarasvati, we seem unpraised; O mother, grant us praise.
त्वे विश्वा सरस्वति श्रितायूंषि देव्याम् । शुनहोत्रेषु मत्स्व प्रजां देवि दिदिड्ढि नः
In you, Sarasvati, all life spans are placed, O goddess; delight in the rites of Śunahotra and grant us offspring, O goddess.
इमा ब्रह्म सरस्वति जुषस्व वाजिनीवति । या ते मन्म गृत्समदा ऋतावरि प्रिया देवेषु जुह्वति
Accept these prayers, Sarasvati, at the horse-rich sacrifice; those offerings which the Gṛtsamadas, devoted to truth, lovingly present among the gods.
प्रेतां यज्ञस्य शम्भुवा युवामिदा वृणीमहे । अग्निं च हव्यवाहनम्
We choose you, youthful and gracious for the sacrifice; and Agni, the bearer of offerings.
द्यावा नः पृथिवी इमं सिध्रमद्य दिविस्पृशम् । यज्ञं देवेषु यच्छताम्
May Heaven and Earth today swiftly grant this sacrifice, touching the sky, to the gods.
आ वामुपस्थमद्रुहा देवाः सीदन्तु यज्ञियाः । इहाद्य सोमपीतये
Let the worshipful gods sit here upon your altar, O Druhā, for the drinking of Soma today.
कनिक्रदज्जनुषं प्रब्रुवाण इयर्ति वाचमरितेव नावम् । सुमङ्गलश्च शकुने भवासि मा त्वा का चिदभिभा विश्व्या विदत्
The shrill-voiced one, proclaiming its birth, raises its speech like a boat on the water; O bird of good omen, may you be auspicious, may no one among all beings overcome you.
मा त्वा श्येन उद्वधीन्मा सुपर्णो मा त्वा विददिषुमान्वीरो अस्ता । पित्र्यामनु प्रदिशं कनिक्रदत्सुमङ्गलो भद्रवादी वदेह
May neither the eagle strike you, nor the great-winged bird, nor the archer find you; following the ancestral path, O shrill-voiced one, speak auspiciously, speak words of blessing.
अव क्रन्द दक्षिणतो गृहाणां सुमङ्गलो भद्रवादी शकुन्ते । मा न स्तेन ईशत माघशंसो बृहद्वदेम विदथे सुवीराः
Cry out from the right side of the house, O bird of good omen, speak words of blessing; let neither thief nor ill-wisher rule over us; let us speak loudly in the assembly, strong in men.
प्रदक्षिणिदभि गृणन्ति कारवो वयो वदन्त ऋतुथा शकुन्तयः । उभे वाचौ वदति सामगा इव गायत्रं च त्रैष्टुभं चानु राजति
Moving to the right, the singers praise, the birds speak in due season; it utters both kinds of speech, like singers of the Sāma, it follows both the Gāyatra and the Triṣṭubh meter.
उद्गातेव शकुने साम गायसि ब्रह्मपुत्र इव सवनेषु शंससि । वृषेव वाजी शिशुमतीरपीत्या सर्वतो नः शकुने भद्रमा वद विश्वतो नः शकुने पुण्यमा वद
Like a singer, O bird, you sing the Sāma; like a son of a priest, you proclaim in the sacrifices; like a stallion, you delight in the foal; from every side, O bird, speak auspiciously for us, from every side, O bird, speak what is good for us.
आवदँस्त्वं शकुने भद्रमा वद तूष्णीमासीनः सुमतिं चिकिद्धि नः । यदुत्पतन्वदसि कर्करिर्यथा बृहद्वदेम विदथे सुवीराः
Speak, O bird, speak auspiciously for us; sitting silently, grant us favor; when you fly and speak with a shrill voice, let us speak loudly in the assembly, strong in men.
सोमस्य मा तवसं वक्ष्यग्ने वह्निं चकर्थ विदथे यजध्यै । देवाँ अच्छा दीद्यद्युञ्जे अद्रिं शमाये अग्ने तन्वं जुषस्व
Agni, you have made yourself the mighty fire for the worship of Soma; shining, you lead the gods to the stone, for peace; Agni, accept our offering.
प्राञ्चं यज्ञं चकृम वर्धतां गीः समिद्भिरग्निं नमसा दुवस्यन् । दिवः शशासुर्विदथा कवीनां गृत्साय चित्तवसे गातुमीषुः
We have prepared the sacrifice facing forward; let the song grow; honoring Agni with kindling and reverence; the wise ones have commanded from heaven, seeking the path for the Gṛtsamada's devotion.
मयो दधे मेधिरः पूतदक्षो दिवः सुबन्धुर्जनुषा पृथिव्याः । अविन्दन्नु दर्शतमप्स्वन्तर्देवासो अग्निमपसि स्वसॄणाम्
The wise, pure-minded, friend of heaven, established joy for the earth by birth; the gods found the radiant one among the waters, Agni, hidden among his sisters.
अवर्धयन्सुभगं सप्त यह्वीः श्वेतं जज्ञानमरुषं महित्वा । शिशुं न जातमभ्यारुरश्वा देवासो अग्निं जनिमन्वपुष्यन्
They caused the seven swift rivers to grow, the shining, unreddened one born in greatness; like a newborn child, the gods mounted Agni, nurturing his origin.
शुक्रेभिरङ्गै रज आततन्वान्क्रतुं पुनानः कविभिः पवित्रैः । शोचिर्वसानः पर्यायुरपां श्रियो मिमीते बृहतीरनूनाः
With radiant limbs, stretching out the realm, purifying wisdom with the poets' pure offerings, wearing brilliance, he moved around the waters, measuring the vast, unfailing splendors.
वव्राजा सीमनदतीरदब्धा दिवो यह्वीरवसाना अनग्नाः । सना अत्र युवतयः सयोनीरेकं गर्भं दधिरे सप्त वाणीः
He traversed the boundaries, unwearying, unimpeded, the young ones of heaven, clothed in brightness, without fire; here, the ancient maidens, sharing a womb, placed one embryo, the seven voices.
स्तीर्णा अस्य संहतो विश्वरूपा घृतस्य योनौ स्रवथे मधूनाम् । अस्थुरत्र धेनवः पिन्वमाना मही दस्मस्य मातरा समीची
Spread out for him, united, of all forms, in the womb of ghee, streams of honey flow; here, nourishing cows stood, the great, harmonious mothers of the wondrous one.
बभ्राणः सूनो सहसो व्यद्यौद्दधानः शुक्रा रभसा वपूंषि । श्चोतन्ति धारा मधुनो घृतस्य वृषा यत्र वावृधे काव्येन
Brown, son of strength, he shone forth, bearing bright, vigorous forms; streams of honey and ghee pour out, where the bull grew through wisdom.
पितुश्चिदूधर्जनुषा विवेद व्यस्य धारा असृजद्वि धेनाः । गुहा चरन्तं सखिभिः शिवेभिर्दिवो यह्वीभिर्न गुहा बभूव
He discerned even his father's udder by birth, released streams, two cows; moving secretly with friendly, auspicious ones, with the young ones of heaven, he was not hidden.
पितुश्च गर्भं जनितुश्च बभ्रे पूर्वीरेको अधयत्पीप्यानाः । वृष्णे सपत्नी शुचये सबन्धू उभे अस्मै मनुष्ये नि पाहि
He bore the embryo of father and creator, the single ancient one drank, growing full; for the mighty, his spouse, the pure, with kin, protect both for him, O human.
उरौ महाँ अनिबाधे ववर्धापो अग्निं यशसः सं हि पूर्वीः । ऋतस्य योनावशयद्दमूना जामीनामग्निरपसि स्वसॄणाम्
In the wide, great, unobstructed space, the waters nourished Agni, for fame, indeed many; in the womb of truth, the wondrous one rested, Agni among the sisters, offspring of mothers.
अक्रो न बभ्रिः समिथे महीनां दिदृक्षेयः सूनवे भाऋजीकः । उदुस्रिया जनिता यो जजानापां गर्भो नृतमो यह्वो अग्निः
Like a bull, brown, in the assembly of the mighty, eager to be seen, shining for the son; the one who was born, the creator, who arose, Agni, the most active, the young one, the embryo of waters.
अपां गर्भं दर्शतमोषधीनां वना जजान सुभगा विरूपम् । देवासश्चिन्मनसा सं हि जग्मुः पनिष्ठं जातं तवसं दुवस्यन्
The embryo of waters, most visible among plants, the woods produced, fortunate, of many forms; even the gods united their minds, honoring the powerful newborn.
बृहन्त इद्भानवो भाऋजीकमग्निं सचन्त विद्युतो न शुक्राः । गुहेव वृद्धं सदसि स्वे अन्तरपार ऊर्वे अमृतं दुहानाः
The great shining ones accompanied Agni, the radiant, like lightning, bright; as if grown in secret, in his own seat, within the farthest womb, they milked the immortal.
ईळे च त्वा यजमानो हविर्भिरीळे सखित्वं सुमतिं निकामः । देवैरवो मिमीहि सं जरित्रे रक्षा च नो दम्येभिरनीकैः
The sacrificer invokes you with offerings, invokes friendship and gracious favor; measure out help with the gods for the worshipper, and protect us with the hosts of the noble.
