चित्रं तद्वो मरुतो याम चेकिते पृश्न्या यदूधरप्यापयो दुहुः । यद्वा निदे नवमानस्य रुद्रियास्त्रितं जराय जुरतामदाभ्याः
Marvelous indeed is your approach, O Maruts, which is observed when, from the udder of Prishni, you drew forth nourishing streams; or when, O Rudrian ones, you, ever youthful, invigorate the aged and the weak with your triple strength.
तान्वो महो मरुत एवयाव्नो विष्णोरेषस्य प्रभृथे हवामहे । हिरण्यवर्णान्ककुहान्यतस्रुचो ब्रह्मण्यन्तः शंस्यं राध ईमहे
Those mighty Maruts, ever advancing, we invoke at the offering of Vishnu; golden-hued, crowned, and radiant, they dwell in the heights, and within the sacred chants we seek their praiseworthy favor.
ते दशग्वाः प्रथमा यज्ञमूहिरे ते नो हिन्वन्तूषसो व्युष्टिषु । उषा न रामीररुणैरपोर्णुते महो ज्योतिषा शुचता गोअर्णसा
Those ten-powered ones first awakened the sacrifice; may they inspire us at the breaking of dawn; like the lovely Ushas, adorned with red, she fills the world with great light, shining with the radiance of cows.
ते क्षोणीभिररुणेभिर्नाञ्जिभी रुद्रा ऋतस्य सदनेषु वावृधुः । निमेघमाना अत्येन पाजसा सुश्चन्द्रं वर्णं दधिरे सुपेशसम्
With the earth, with red and shining adornments, O Rudras, you have grown strong in the abode of truth; moving swiftly with power, you have assumed a splendid and beautiful form, full of brightness.
ताँ इयानो महि वरूथमूतय उप घेदेना नमसा गृणीमसि । त्रितो न यान्पञ्च होतॄनभिष्टय आववर्तदवराञ्चक्रियावसे
To those mighty ones, the great protectors, we come with reverence and praise; like Trita, who turned back five priests for help, we invoke you to return and grant us your aid.
यया रध्रं पारयथात्यंहो यया निदो मुञ्चथ वन्दितारम् । अर्वाची सा मरुतो या व ऊतिरो षु वाश्रेव सुमतिर्जिगातु
By which you carry the needy across distress, by which you free the worshipper from harm, let that favor, O Maruts, approach us; may your good will, like a cow to her calf, come near and bring us joy.
उपेमसृक्षि वाजयुर्वचस्यां चनो दधीत नाद्यो गिरो मे । अपां नपादाशुहेमा कुवित्स सुपेशसस्करति जोषिषद्धि
I have approached, eager for strength and eloquence; may the streams of my speech be fruitful; O offspring of the waters, may you grant us favor, for you delight in beautiful forms.
इमं स्वस्मै हृद आ सुतष्टं मन्त्रं वोचेम कुविदस्य वेदत् । अपां नपादसुर्यस्य मह्ना विश्वान्यर्यो भुवना जजान
Let us speak this well-crafted hymn from the heart for ourselves, so that the wise may know; by the greatness of the sun-born offspring of the waters, the noble one has created all worlds.
समन्या यन्त्युप यन्त्यन्याः समानमूर्वं नद्यः पृणन्ति । तमू शुचिं शुचयो दीदिवांसमपां नपातं परि तस्थुरापः
Some rivers come together, others flow apart; all fill the same channel; those pure ones, shining, surround the radiant offspring of the waters.
तमस्मेरा युवतयो युवानं मर्मृज्यमानाः परि यन्त्यापः । स शुक्रेभिः शिक्वभी रेवदस्मे दीदायानिध्मो घृतनिर्णिगप्सु
The young women, shining, circle the youthful one, cleansing him; he, with bright flames and powerful streams, shines for us, the kindler, with clarified butter in the waters.
अस्मै तिस्रो अव्यथ्याय नारीर्देवाय देवीर्दिधिषन्त्यन्नम् । कृता इवोप हि प्रसर्स्रे अप्सु स पीयूषं धयति पूर्वसूनाम्
Three goddesses, unwearied, prepare food for him, the divine one; like skilled hands, they move in the waters, and he drinks the sweet nourishment of his ancient mothers.
अश्वस्यात्र जनिमास्य च स्वर्द्रुहो रिषः सम्पृचः पाहि सूरीन् । आमासु पूर्षु परो अप्रमृष्यं नारातयो वि नशन्नानृतानि
Here is the birth of the horse and the sun; protect us from harm and discord, grant us unity; among these clans, let the unassailable one shine, so that falsehoods and hostilities vanish.
स्व आ दमे सुदुघा यस्य धेनुः स्वधां पीपाय सुभ्वन्नमत्ति । सो अपां नपादूर्जयन्नप्स्वन्तर्वसुदेयाय विधते वि भाति
In his own house, whose cow yields abundantly, he enjoys his own sustenance and eats good food; so the offspring of the waters, shining within the streams, appears for the giver of wealth.
यो अप्स्वा शुचिना दैव्येन ऋतावाजस्र उर्विया विभाति । वया इदन्या भुवनान्यस्य प्र जायन्ते वीरुधश्च प्रजाभिः
He who, pure in the waters and divine, shines endlessly and widely; from him, all other beings are born, and plants grow with their offspring.
अपां नपादा ह्यस्थादुपस्थं जिह्मानामूर्ध्वो विद्युतं वसानः । तस्य ज्येष्ठं महिमानं वहन्तीर्हिरण्यवर्णाः परि यन्ति यह्वीः
The offspring of the waters has stood upright in the lap of the rivers, clothed in lightning; his greatest majesty is carried by the golden-colored swift ones who circle around him.
हिरण्यरूपः स हिरण्यसंदृगपां नपात्सेदु हिरण्यवर्णः । हिरण्ययात्परि योनेर्निषद्या हिरण्यदा ददत्यन्नमस्मै
Golden in form, golden in radiance, the offspring of the waters shines with golden hue; seated in the golden womb, he gives golden food to those who approach him.
तदस्यानीकमुत चारु नामापीच्यं वर्धते नप्तुरपाम् । यमिन्धते युवतयः समित्था हिरण्यवर्णं घृतमन्नमस्य
That face of his, and his lovely name, ever increase, worthy of praise, of the grandson of the waters; whom the young women, well adorned, kindle—the golden-hued, ghee-offering of his.
अस्मै बहूनामवमाय सख्ये यज्ञैर्विधेम नमसा हविर्भिः । सं सानु मार्ज्मि दिधिषामि बिल्मैर्दधाम्यन्नैः परि वन्द ऋग्भिः
To him, the support and companion of many, let us offer with sacrifices, with reverence and oblations; I cleanse the summit, I desire to reach with offerings, I place food, I honor with hymns.
स ईं वृषाजनयत्तासु गर्भं स ईं शिशुर्धयति तं रिहन्ति । सो अपां नपादनभिम्लातवर्णोऽन्यस्येवेह तन्वा विवेष
He, the bull, generated the embryo within them; he, as a child, nourishes it, they cherish him; he, the son of the waters, with unblemished form, has entered here as if with another body.
अस्मिन्पदे परमे तस्थिवांसमध्वस्मभिर्विश्वहा दीदिवांसम् । आपो नप्त्रे घृतमन्नं वहन्तीः स्वयमत्कैः परि दीयन्ति यह्वीः
In this highest place where he stands, ever shining with libations, the waters, carrying ghee as food for the offspring, by their own acts, flow around him, the mighty one.
अयांसमग्ने सुक्षितिं जनायायांसमु मघवद्भ्यः सुवृक्तिम् । विश्वं तद्भद्रं यदवन्ति देवा बृहद्वदेम विदथे सुवीराः
May we bring you, Agni, to a good dwelling for the people; may we bring you to generous praise for the bountiful; may all that is auspicious, which the gods protect, be ours; may we speak greatly in the assembly, strong in men.
तुभ्यं हिन्वानो वसिष्ट गा अपोऽधुक्षन्सीमविभिरद्रिभिर्नरः । पिबेन्द्र स्वाहा प्रहुतं वषट्कृतं होत्रादा सोमं प्रथमो य ईशिषे
For you, O Vasiṣṭha, the men have poured forth the waters, milking them with channels and stones; drink, O Indra, with svāhā, the well-offered, vaṣaṭ-acclaimed soma, first from the hotṛ, you who are the lord.
यज्ञैः सम्मिश्लाः पृषतीभिरृष्टिभिर्यामञ्छुभ्रासो अञ्जिषु प्रिया उत । आसद्या बर्हिर्भरतस्य सूनवः पोत्रादा सोमं पिबता दिवो नरः
Blended with sacrifices, with speckled steeds, with spears, shining, anointed, and dear, having taken their seat on the sacred grass, O sons of Bharata, drink the soma from the potṛ, O men of heaven.
अमेव नः सुहवा आ हि गन्तन नि बर्हिषि सदतना रणिष्टन । अथा मन्दस्व जुजुषाणो अन्धसस्त्वष्टर्देवेभिर्जनिभिः सुमद्गणः
Thus, O gracious ones, come to us, sit on the sacred grass, and be victorious; then rejoice, delighting in the soma, O Tvaṣṭar, with the divine generations, O joyful company.
आ वक्षि देवाँ इह विप्र यक्षि चोशन्होतर्नि षदा योनिषु त्रिषु । प्रति वीहि प्रस्थितं सोम्यं मधु पिबाग्नीध्रात्तव भागस्य तृप्णुहि
Come, O gods, here, inspired one, enjoy, O Hotṛ, sit always in the three seats; accept the soma that has been poured out, drink the honeyed one from the Agnīdh's portion, be satisfied with your share.
एष स्य ते तन्वो नृम्णवर्धनः सह ओजः प्रदिवि बाह्वोर्हितः । तुभ्यं सुतो मघवन्तुभ्यमाभृतस्त्वमस्य ब्राह्मणादा तृपत्पिब
This, indeed, is the strength of your form, increasing manliness, power and vigor placed in your arms; for you is the pressed soma, for you the offering; you, from the brāhmaṇa, take and drink to satisfaction.
जुषेथां यज्ञं बोधतं हवस्य मे सत्तो होता निविदः पूर्व्या अनु । अच्छा राजाना नम एत्यावृतं प्रशास्त्रादा पिबतं सोम्यं मधु
May you both accept the sacrifice, be aware of my invocation, seated as Hotṛ, following the ancient announcements; to you, O kings, this reverence is offered, come, drink the honeyed soma from the proclaimer.
मन्दस्व होत्रादनु जोषमन्धसोऽध्वर्यवः स पूर्णां वष्ट्यासिचम् । तस्मा एतं भरत तद्वशो ददिर्होत्रात्सोमं द्रविणोदः पिब ऋतुभिः
Rejoice in the oblation, as you desire the soma, O Hotṛ; the Adhvaryus pour out the full libation for him; therefore, O Bharata, give this to him as he wishes, drink the soma from the Hotṛ, O bestower of wealth, in due order.
यमु पूर्वमहुवे तमिदं हुवे सेदु हव्यो ददिर्यो नाम पत्यते । अध्वर्युभिः प्रस्थितं सोम्यं मधु पोत्रात्सोमं द्रविणोदः पिब ऋतुभिः
Whom I invoked before, him now I invoke—let him be the one to be called, the giver who bears the name; drink the honeyed soma, pressed by the Adhvaryus, from the Potṛ, O bestower of wealth, in due order.
मेद्यन्तु ते वह्नयो येभिरीयसेऽरिषण्यन्वीळयस्वा वनस्पते । आयूया धृष्णो अभिगूर्या त्वं नेष्ट्रात्सोमं द्रविणोदः पिब ऋतुभिः
May your fires be kindled, by which you proceed, uninjured, O Lord of the Forest, be gracious; for long life, O bold one, with your protection, drink the soma from the Neṣṭṛ, O bestower of wealth, in due order.
