कङ्कतो न कङ्कतोऽथो सतीनकङ्कतः । द्वाविति प्लुषी इति न्यदृष्टा अलिप्सत
Like the cry of the heron, and again the heron's cry, and the cry of the satina-heron; two, they say, 'Plushi,' thus the unseen ones have settled and have not touched.
अदृष्टान्हन्त्यायत्यथो हन्ति परायती । अथो अवघ्नती हन्त्यथो पिनष्टि पिंषती
The unseen ones strike those approaching, and also strike those departing; they strike from above, and also crush and grind.
शरासः कुशरासो दर्भासः सैर्या उत । मौञ्जा अदृष्टा वैरिणाः सर्वे साकं न्यलिप्सत
Arrows, false arrows, grasses, and reeds; the munja grass, the unseen enemies, all together have settled and have not touched.
नि गावो गोष्ठे असदन्नि मृगासो अविक्षत । नि केतवो जनानां न्यदृष्टा अलिप्सत
The cows have settled in the cowshed, the wild animals have wandered; the signs among people, the unseen ones have settled and have not touched.
एत उ त्ये प्रत्यदृश्रन्प्रदोषं तस्करा इव । अदृष्टा विश्वदृष्टाः प्रतिबुद्धा अभूतन
These have appeared at dusk, like thieves; the unseen ones, seen by all, have become awakened.
द्यौर्वः पिता पृथिवी माता सोमो भ्रातादितिः स्वसा । अदृष्टा विश्वदृष्टास्तिष्ठतेलयता सु कम्
Heaven is your father, earth is your mother, Soma is your brother, Aditi is your sister; the unseen ones, seen by all, stand, may you move well.
ये अंस्या ये अङ्ग्याः सूचीका ये प्रकङ्कताः । अदृष्टाः किं चनेह वः सर्वे साकं नि जस्यत
Those who are on the shoulder, those who are on the limb, those who are needle-like, those who are prakaṅkata; unseen ones, whatever you are here, all together be subdued.
उत्पुरस्तात्सूर्य एति विश्वदृष्टो अदृष्टहा । अदृष्टान्सर्वाञ्जम्भयन्सर्वाश्च यातुधान्यः
The sun rises in front, seen by all, destroyer of the unseen; he subdues all unseen ones and all sorcerers.
उदपप्तदसौ सूर्यः पुरु विश्वानि जूर्वन् । आदित्यः पर्वतेभ्यो विश्वदृष्टो अदृष्टहा
The sun has risen, driving away all afflictions; the Aditya, from the mountains, seen by all, destroyer of the unseen.
सूर्ये विषम् आ सजामि दृतिꣳ सुरावतो गृहे । सो चिन् नु न मराति नो वयम् मरामारे अस्य योजनꣳ हरिष्ठा मधु त्वा मधुला चकार
I set my resolve in the sun, in the house of the generous; may he not perish, nor may we perish; may the bond of this one not be broken; honeyed is your strength, honeyed your work.
इयत्तिका शकुन्तिका सका जघास ते विषम् । सो चिन् नु न मराति नो वयम् मरामारे अस्य योजनꣳ हरिष्ठा मधु त्वा मधुला चकार
This little bird, the female, has eaten poison with you. Yet neither she nor we die; let us not die from this. The measure of this has been taken; honey for you, the honey-maker has made.
त्रिः सप्त विष्पुलिङ्गका विषस्य पुष्यम् अक्षन् । ताश् चिन् नु न मरन्ति नो वयम् मरामारे अस्य योजनꣳ हरिष्ठा मधु त्वा मधुला चकार
Three times seven sparks, the fruits of poison, have been seen. Yet neither they nor we die; let us not die from this. The measure of this has been taken; honey for you, the honey-maker has made.
नवानाꣳ नवतीनाꣳ विषस्य रोपुषीणाम् । सर्वासाम् अग्रभꣳ नामारे अस्य योजनꣳ हरिष्ठा मधु त्वा मधुला चकार
Of the ninety-nine, of the poisonous ones, of the sprouting ones, I have taken the name of all. Let us not die from this. The measure of this has been taken; honey for you, the honey-maker has made.
त्रिः सप्त मयूर्यः सप्त स्वसारो अग्रुवः । तास् ते विषꣳ वि जभ्रिर उदकꣳ कुम्भिनीर् इव
Three times seven peahens, seven sisters, the foremost ones—these have carried the poison for you, like water in jars.
इयत्तकः कुषुम्भकस् तकम् भिनद्म्य् अश्मना । ततो विषम् प्र वावृते पराचीर् अनु सꣳवतः
Just as much as this Kuṣumbhaka, I break it with a stone; then the poison is expelled, flowing away in the opposite direction.
कुषुम्भकस् तद् अब्रवीद् गिरेः प्रवर्तमानकः । वृश्चिकस्यारसꣳ विषम् अरसꣳ वृश्चिक ते विषम्
Kuṣumbhaka spoke thus, rolling down from the mountain: 'The poison of the scorpion is tasteless; tasteless is your poison, O scorpion.'
त्वमग्ने द्युभिस्त्वमाशुशुक्षणिस्त्वमद्भ्यस्त्वमश्मनस्परि । त्वं वनेभ्यस्त्वमोषधीभ्यस्त्वं नृणां नृपते जायसे शुचिः
O Agni, you shine forth with the heavens; you are swift among the waters, and upon the stones. You are in the forests, in the plants, and among men, O lord of people, you are born pure.
तवाग्ने होत्रं तव पोत्रमृत्वियं तव नेष्ट्रं त्वमग्निदृतायतः । तव प्रशास्त्रं त्वमध्वरीयसि ब्रह्मा चासि गृहपतिश्च नो दमे
O Agni, yours is the office of Hotar, yours the Potar's role, yours the priestly function; you are the Neshṭar, you are the Agnidh, and the supervisor. Yours is the role of Praśāstar at the sacrifice; you are the Brahman, and you are our householder in the home.
त्वमग्न इन्द्रो वृषभः सतामसि त्वं विष्णुरुरुगायो नमस्यः । त्वं ब्रह्मा रयिविद्ब्रह्मणस्पते त्वं विधर्तः सचसे पुरंध्या
You, Agni, are Indra, the mighty bull among the true; you are Vishnu, wide-striding and worthy of reverence. You are Brahmanaspati, the possessor of wealth, O lord of prayer; you are the arranger, you join with the generous.
त्वमग्ने राजा वरुणो धृतव्रतस्त्वं मित्रो भवसि दस्म ईड्यः । त्वमर्यमा सत्पतिर्यस्य सम्भुजं त्वमंशो विदथे देव भाजयुः
You, Agni, are king Varuna, firm in your vows; you are Mitra, wondrous and worthy of praise. You are Aryaman, the true lord whose portion is shared; you are Aṃśa, O god, who receives a share in the rite.
त्वमग्ने त्वष्टा विधते सुवीर्यं तव ग्नावो मित्रमहः सजात्यम् । त्वमाशुहेमा ररिषे स्वश्व्यं त्वं नरां शर्धो असि पुरूवसुः
You, Agni, are Tvaṣṭar, granting excellent strength; your kin are the goddesses, your companions are friendly. You have obtained shining gold and fine horses; you are the host of men, O Agni, rich in many treasures.
त्वमग्ने रुद्रो असुरो महो दिवस्त्वं शर्धो मारुतं पृक्ष ईशिषे । त्वं वातैररुणैर्यासि शंगयस्त्वं पूषा विधतः पासि नु त्मना
You, Agni, are Rudra, the Asura of the great sky; you command the host of the Maruts and the nourishing ones. You go with the reddish winds, bringing delight; you are Pūṣan, the provider, protecting by your own nature.
त्वमग्ने द्रविणोदा अरंकृते त्वं देवः सविता रत्नधा असि । त्वं भगो नृपते वस्व ईशिषे त्वं पायुर्दमे यस्तेऽविधत्
You, Agni, are the giver of wealth, ready for the task; you are the god Savitar, the bestower of treasures. You are Bhaga, lord of men, ruling over riches; you are the guardian in the home for the one who has appointed you.
त्वामग्ने दम आ विश्पतिं विशस्त्वां राजानं सुविदत्रमृञ्जते । त्वं विश्वानि स्वनीक पत्यसे त्वं सहस्राणि शता दश प्रति
You, Agni, are called to the house as lord of the people; the clans make you their king, wise in counsel. You are master of all possessions, O radiant one; you distribute thousands, hundreds, and tens.
त्वामग्ने पितरमिष्टिभिर्नरस्त्वां भ्रात्राय शम्या तनूरुचम् । त्वं पुत्रो भवसि यस्तेऽविधत्त्वं सखा सुशेवः पास्याधृषः
You, Agni, are a father to men with offerings; you are a brother, friendly, with shining form. You become a son to the one who has appointed you; you are a good friend, undeceivable, protecting us.
त्वमग्न ऋभुराके नमस्यस्त्वं वाजस्य क्षुमतो राय ईशिषे । त्वं वि भास्यनु दक्षि दावने त्वं विशिक्षुरसि यज्ञमातनिः
You, Agni, are the skillful Ribhus, worthy of reverence; you rule over the prize of strength and wealth. You shine forth, spreading to the right in burning; you are the arranger, extending the sacrifice.
त्वमग्ने अदितिर्देव दाशुषे त्वं होत्रा भारती वर्धसे गिरा । त्वमिळा शतहिमासि दक्षसे त्वं वृत्रहा वसुपते सरस्वती
You, Agni, are Aditi, O god, for the worshipper; you grow as the Hotrā Bhāratī through song. You are Ilā, rich in gifts, for skill; you are the slayer of Vṛtra, lord of wealth, Sarasvatī.
त्वमग्ने सुभृत उत्तमं वयस्तव स्पार्हे वर्ण आ संदृशि श्रियः । त्वं वाजः प्रतरणो बृहन्नसि त्वं रयिर्बहुलो विश्वतस्पृथुः
You, Agni, are the well-sustained, highest vigor; your splendid form is seen in your radiant beauty. You are the prize, the great deliverer; you are abundant wealth, broad on every side.
त्वामग्न आदित्यास आस्यं त्वां जिह्वां शुचयश्चक्रिरे कवे । त्वां रातिषाचो अध्वरेषु सश्चिरे त्वे देवा हविरदन्त्याहुतम्
You, Agni, the Ādityas made their mouth; the pure ones made you their tongue, O wise one. The bestowers of gifts have joined you at sacrifices; the gods eat the offering that is poured to you.
त्वे अग्ने विश्वे अमृतासो अद्रुह आसा देवा हविरदन्त्याहुतम् । त्वया मर्तासः स्वदन्त आसुतिं त्वं गर्भो वीरुधां जज्ञिषे शुचिः
In you, Agni, all the immortal gods, without deceit, eat the offering that is poured. Through you, mortals enjoy nourishment; you are the pure embryo born of plants.
