भारतीळे सरस्वति या वः सर्वा उपब्रुवे । ता नश्चोदयत श्रिये
O Bhāratī, Iḷā, Sarasvatī, and all of you whom I invoke—may you inspire us to glory.
त्वष्टा रूपाणि हि प्रभुः पशून्विश्वान्समानजे । तेषां न स्फातिमा यज
Tvaṣṭṛ, the sovereign, has fashioned all forms and all creatures; offer for us their abundance.
उप त्मन्या वनस्पते पाथो देवेभ्यः सृज । अग्निर्हव्यानि सिष्वदत्
O Lord of the Forest, let your sap flow forth for the gods; let Agni carry the offerings.
पुरोगा अग्निर्देवानां गायत्रेण समज्यते । स्वाहाकृतीषु रोचते
Agni, leader of the gods, is joined with the Gāyatrī; he shines in the utterances of svāhā.
अग्ने नय सुपथा राये अस्मान्विश्वानि देव वयुनानि विद्वान् । युयोध्यस्मज्जुहुराणमेनो भूयिष्ठां ते नमउक्तिं विधेम
Agni, lead us on the good path to prosperity, O god, knowing all the ways; keep us away from crooked sin. We offer you the highest praise.
अग्ने त्वं पारया नव्यो अस्मान्स्वस्तिभिरति दुर्गाणि विश्वा । पूश्च पृथ्वी बहुला न उर्वी भवा तोकाय तनयाय शं योः
Agni, carry us across all hardships to safety with your blessings; may Pūṣan and the broad earth, vast and wide, be gracious to our offspring and descendants.
अग्ने त्वमस्मद्युयोध्यमीवा अनग्नित्रा अभ्यमन्त कृष्टीः । पुनरस्मभ्यं सुविताय देव क्षां विश्वेभिरमृतेभिर्यजत्र
Agni, drive away from us all hostility, whether from those without fire or from hostile tribes; again, for our well-being, O god, grant us land with all the immortals, O worthy one.
पाहि नो अग्ने पायुभिरजस्रैरुत प्रिये सदन आ शुशुक्वान् । मा ते भयं जरितारं यविष्ठ नूनं विदन्मापरं सहस्वः
Guard us, Agni, with unfailing protections; shine in your beloved seat. Let not fear come to your worshipper, youngest one; may we now know your further strength.
मा नो अग्नेऽव सृजो अघायाविष्यवे रिपवे दुच्छुनायै । मा दत्वते दशते मादते नो मा रीषते सहसावन्परा दाः
Let not, O Agni, the evil-doer, the enemy, or the malicious one overpower us; let not the thief, the deceiver, or the reviler harm us. Drive them far away, O mighty one.
वि घ त्वावाँ ऋतजात यंसद्गृणानो अग्ने तन्वे वरूथम् । विश्वाद्रिरिक्षोरुत वा निनित्सोरभिह्रुतामसि हि देव विष्पट्
Indeed, you, born of truth, grant protection to the singer, Agni, for his own person; you are the defense against all who wish to harm or injure, for you, O god, are the universal guardian.
त्वं ताँ अग्न उभयान्वि विद्वान्वेषि प्रपित्वे मनुषो यजत्र । अभिपित्वे मनवे शास्यो भूर्मर्मृजेन्य उशिग्भिर्नाक्रः
You, Agni, knowing both sides, seek out the ancient path for man, O worthy one; you are to be obeyed by the one who seeks to surpass, and you are the leader among the inspired seers.
अवोचाम निवचनान्यस्मिन्मानस्य सूनुः सहसाने अग्नौ । वयं सहस्रमृषिभिः सनेम विद्यामेषं वृजनं जीरदानुम्
We have spoken these utterances in the presence of the mind's son, in the mighty fire; may we, together with a thousand sages, attain strength and know this enduring, nourishing people.
अनर्वाणं वृषभं मन्द्रजिह्वं बृहस्पतिं वर्धया नव्यमर्कैः । गाथान्यः सुरुचो यस्य देवा आशृण्वन्ति नवमानस्य मर्ताः
Exalt the bull, whose tongue is gentle, Brihaspati, with fresh hymns; whose songs are radiant, to whom the gods listen, and mortals with renewed minds.
तमृत्विया उप वाचः सचन्ते सर्गो न यो देवयतामसर्जि । बृहस्पतिः स ह्यञ्जो वरांसि विभ्वाभवत्समृते मातरिश्वा
To him, the priests join their voices, as a flow that is sent forth by those devoted to the gods; Brihaspati, swift and powerful, became manifold, remembered by Matarishvan.
उपस्तुतिं नमस उद्यतिं च श्लोकं यंसत्सवितेव प्र बाहू । अस्य क्रत्वाहन्यो यो अस्ति मृगो न भीमो अरक्षसस्तुविष्मान्
Let praise, reverence, and exaltation be offered to him, whose hymn rises like Savitar's arms; by his resolve, he is unique, fierce as a wild beast, mighty, and a protector against harm.
अस्य श्लोको दिवीयते पृथिव्यामत्यो न यंसद्यक्षभृद्विचेताः । मृगाणां न हेतयो यन्ति चेमा बृहस्पतेरहिमायाँ अभि द्यून्
His hymn resounds in heaven and on earth, like a charioteer whose song carries the burden of the unseen; as the tracks of wild beasts move here, so Brihaspati's power overcomes the clouds.
ये त्वा देवोस्रिकं मन्यमानाः पापा भद्रमुपजीवन्ति पज्राः । न दूढ्ये अनु ददासि वामं बृहस्पते चयस इत्पियारुम्
Those who, thinking you are weak, approach you, O Brihaspati, for good fortune, live prosperously; you do not withhold gifts from the deserving, but grant favor even to the humble.
सुप्रैतुः सूयवसो न पन्था दुर्नियन्तुः परिप्रीतो न मित्रः । अनर्वाणो अभि ये चक्षते नोऽपीवृता अपोर्णुवन्तो अस्थुः
May the path of the generous be well-trodden, like that of a friend who is easily pleased; those who are not weak, who look upon us kindly, stand fulfilled, having attained abundance.
सं यं स्तुभोऽवनयो न यन्ति समुद्रं न स्रवतो रोधचक्राः । स विद्वाँ उभयं चष्टे अन्तर्बृहस्पतिस्तर आपश्च गृध्रः
The praise that is sung does not go astray, like waters that flow to the ocean, unhindered by barriers; Brihaspati, knowing both sides, perceives within, crossing the waters like a vulture.
एवा महस्तुविजातस्तुविष्मान्बृहस्पतिर्वृषभो धायि देवः । स न स्तुतो वीरवद्धातु गोमद्विद्यामेषं वृजनं जीरदानुम्
Thus, Brihaspati, born of greatness, mighty, the bull, the god, is established; may he, praised by us, grant heroic strength and cattle, and may we know this enduring, nourishing people.
कङ्कतो न कङ्कतोऽथो सतीनकङ्कतः । द्वाविति प्लुषी इति न्यदृष्टा अलिप्सत
Like the cry of the heron, and again the heron's cry, and the cry of the satina-heron; two, they say, 'Plushi,' thus the unseen ones have settled and have not touched.
अदृष्टान्हन्त्यायत्यथो हन्ति परायती । अथो अवघ्नती हन्त्यथो पिनष्टि पिंषती
The unseen ones strike those approaching, and also strike those departing; they strike from above, and also crush and grind.
शरासः कुशरासो दर्भासः सैर्या उत । मौञ्जा अदृष्टा वैरिणाः सर्वे साकं न्यलिप्सत
Arrows, false arrows, grasses, and reeds; the munja grass, the unseen enemies, all together have settled and have not touched.
नि गावो गोष्ठे असदन्नि मृगासो अविक्षत । नि केतवो जनानां न्यदृष्टा अलिप्सत
The cows have settled in the cowshed, the wild animals have wandered; the signs among people, the unseen ones have settled and have not touched.
एत उ त्ये प्रत्यदृश्रन्प्रदोषं तस्करा इव । अदृष्टा विश्वदृष्टाः प्रतिबुद्धा अभूतन
These have appeared at dusk, like thieves; the unseen ones, seen by all, have become awakened.
द्यौर्वः पिता पृथिवी माता सोमो भ्रातादितिः स्वसा । अदृष्टा विश्वदृष्टास्तिष्ठतेलयता सु कम्
Heaven is your father, earth is your mother, Soma is your brother, Aditi is your sister; the unseen ones, seen by all, stand, may you move well.
ये अंस्या ये अङ्ग्याः सूचीका ये प्रकङ्कताः । अदृष्टाः किं चनेह वः सर्वे साकं नि जस्यत
Those who are on the shoulder, those who are on the limb, those who are needle-like, those who are prakaṅkata; unseen ones, whatever you are here, all together be subdued.
उत्पुरस्तात्सूर्य एति विश्वदृष्टो अदृष्टहा । अदृष्टान्सर्वाञ्जम्भयन्सर्वाश्च यातुधान्यः
The sun rises in front, seen by all, destroyer of the unseen; he subdues all unseen ones and all sorcerers.
उदपप्तदसौ सूर्यः पुरु विश्वानि जूर्वन् । आदित्यः पर्वतेभ्यो विश्वदृष्टो अदृष्टहा
The sun has risen, driving away all afflictions; the Aditya, from the mountains, seen by all, destroyer of the unseen.
सूर्ये विषम् आ सजामि दृतिꣳ सुरावतो गृहे । सो चिन् नु न मराति नो वयम् मरामारे अस्य योजनꣳ हरिष्ठा मधु त्वा मधुला चकार
I set my resolve in the sun, in the house of the generous; may he not perish, nor may we perish; may the bond of this one not be broken; honeyed is your strength, honeyed your work.
