That favor of Savitar, most excellent, today we desire in the god's impulse; for us, O Heaven and Earth, grant with good understanding wealth, rich in goods and a hundred herds.
For you, Heaven and Earth, beneficent to all, upholders of order, wise, bear the expanse; well-born, O Dhiṣaṇā, you move between, god and goddess, by law the pure Sun.
Wide in extent, mighty, ever active, father and mother protect the worlds; with firm might, wondrous, the two regions, as a father, established them with forms.
That fire, the son of the two parents, bearing the purifier, the wise one, purifies the worlds by his power; both the cow Pṛśni and the bull, rich in seed, always yield his bright milk.
He is the least among the gods, among the helpers, who generated the two worlds, beneficent to all; he who measured out the regions for wise action, with the ancient supports, upholding the hymn.
You, Heaven and Earth, mighty ones, grant us great glory and power, by which, ever, you spread out the peoples; may you bestow strength and vigor upon us.
Which is the best, which the youngest, has not come? Who is sent as messenger, what shall we say? We do not blame the vessel, which is of great lineage; O Agni, brother, let us praise the prosperity of the wood.
Make one vessel into four, so the gods said to you; thus you came. If you, O Saudhanvanas, do this, together with the gods you shall become worthy of sacrifice.
When you spoke to Agni, the messenger, 'Let us make a horse, let us make a chariot here; let us make a cow, let us make a youth,' these deeds, brothers, we have performed for you.
Having done so, the Ṛbhus asked, 'Where is he today, the messenger who has not come?' When he declared the vessels made four, then Tvaṣṭṛ entered among the goddesses.
‘Let us slay them,’ so Tvaṣṭṛ said, when those who drink for the gods did not honor the vessel; others make new names at the pressing, others touch them with the names of maidens.
Indra yoked the two bays, the Aśvins their chariot, Bṛhaspati approached the all-formed; Ṛbhu, Vibhvan, Vāja, the gods came, skillful, to apportion the sacrificial share.
With their thought they fashioned a cow from a hide, which, old, they made young again; the Saudhanvanas shaped a horse from a horse, having yoked the chariot, they came to the gods.
‘Drink this water,’ they said, ‘or rather, drink this pressed soma.’ If you, Saudhanvanas, desire that, then rejoice in the third pressing.
‘Let there be more water,’ said one; ‘Let there be more fire,’ said another; ‘Let the vessel be distributed among many,’ said one; speaking rightly, they filled the vessels.
One carries away the water from the cow's thigh; one cuts the flesh, filled for the dog; one alone removes the dung; what indeed did the parents do for their sons?
When they led out, they made grass for us; when they brought back, water, with their own skill, O men. That which is in the house of the mysterious one, let not you, O Ribhus, follow that today.
When, closing in, you circled the worlds, where indeed did those parents sit or go? He cursed the one who took the whole hand; whoever spoke out, speak forth to him.
Sleeping, the Ribhus asked: 'O mysterious one, who has awakened us?' The ram spoke to the dog, the awakener: 'This has been revealed today after a year.'
By day the Maruts go, on earth Agni, this wind moves through the midspace; Varuna goes with the waters, with the oceans—desiring you, O sons of strength.
May neither Mitra, nor Varuna, nor Aryaman, nor Indra, nor the Ribhukṣins, nor the Maruts, find fault with us, as we declare the heroic deeds of the race-born steed in the assembly.
When, with the covering cloth, they lead forth the gift taken from the mouth of the unyoked, may the well-guided, the all-formed, the dear path of Indra and Pūṣan, go forth.
This goat, as the portion of Pūṣan, is led forth before the swift horse, for all the gods; as the beloved sacrificial cake is for the swift one, Tvaṣṭṛ urges it on for Sauśravas.
When, at the proper time, men lead the sacrificial horse three times around for the gods, here the first portion of Pūṣan goes, the goat announcing the sacrifice to the gods.
The Hotṛ, the Adhvaryu, the one who kindles the fire, the stone-holder, and the wise praiser—by this well-ordered, well-offered sacrifice, fill your abodes.
Those who prepare the yūpa posts, those who carry the yūpa, those who fashion the horse's yūpa, and those who gather the cooking for the swift one—may their praise reach us.
May my inspired thought be well-placed before the gods, as the wish approaches, as the wise ones, the seers, rejoice in him; we have made the horse a dear companion for the gods' nourishment.
Whatever is the halter, the binding rope of the swift one, whatever is the head-rope, the rein, or the grass placed in his mouth, let all these be with the gods for you.
Whatever of the horse's flesh the flies have touched, or whatever is cut by the knife or axe, whatever is on the hands of the carver, or under the nails, let all these be with the gods for you.
Whatever from the belly is to be removed, whatever smell of raw flesh there is, let the skilled carvers make that ready, and let them cook the well-boiled offering.
