O Agni, listen to us; you are invoked and speak to the gods, to the worshipful kings, to the worshipful kings. When the gods gave the cow to the Angiras, Aryaman milked it out with the cutting tool; he knows it, he knows it with me.
Let not your heroic deeds pass us by, let your ancient glories always be ours, nor let your wrath fall upon us, nor let your wrath fall upon us. Whatever is wonderful, new in every age, immortal in sound, let that be ours, O Maruts, and whatever is hard to overcome, let that be ours, whatever is hard to overcome.
Dadhyaṅ, my ancestor, was an Angiras; Priyamedha, Kaṇva, Atri, Manu—they knew, my ancestors Manu knew. Among the gods are their descendants, among them are our kin. By their path I bow, by my song I bow to Indra and Agni.
Let the priest offer the sacrifice, let the desired gifts be won; Bṛhaspati sacrifices, Vena with bulls, with many bulls. We have grasped the distant sign, the song from the mountain, with our own strength. The wise one has established the dwellings, the wise one many dwellings.
You gods who are eleven in heaven, eleven on earth, eleven in the waters, mighty ones, you gods, accept this sacrifice.
For the altar, for the beloved, for the radiant one, bring forth the seat for Agni as one would bring a foundation; as with a garment, clothe the pure one with your mind, the chariot of light, bright in color, dispelling darkness.
The twice-born, threefold, is purified; in the year it grows, eaten again. With the tongue of another, the bull is praised; with another's voice, the offering is cleansed.
Black and white, the two mothers stir for him; both cross over, the mothers nurture the child. With forward-pointing tongue, shining, flowing, the companion, the heap, the father's nourishment grows.
Desiring release for Manu, for the offspring of Manu, swift and dark, black and white, they drive forth. Unresting, quick, swift-moving, wind-driven, the steeds are harnessed.
From you, shining, they move forth, seeking increase; the black cloud, the great form, they have made. When it touches the earth, the expanse, it resounds, breathing, thundering, it roars.
He who is adorned among the brown ones, bows down; like a bull, he approaches his wives, roaring. Growing strong, his body shines; fierce as horns, he rushes, hard to seize.
He who is well-ordered and expansive gathers together, knowing as if knowing those who are always lying down; they grow again, even though they go to the divine, they make another form together for the two parents.
The agile ones, with flowing hair, together with their cries, have stood upright, not angry, returning for the journey; releasing their old age, they go forth, making a sound, giving birth to another living, unwearied one.
He, adorned, moves around the mother, day by day, with strong powers, he goes beyond old age; bearing youth, he moves like a swan, always desiring, the eagle joins the paths.
Shine for us, O Agni, among the generous; like a strong bull, O house-lord, breathe forth; let the one who must dwell, the child-bearing one, not fail, but, like armor in battle, be protected.
O Agni, may this well-offering be dearer to you than the ill-offering; may it be more beloved to your mind; by that bright, pure radiance of yours which shines from your body, may you win treasure for us.
For the chariot, for the boat, and for our house, O Agni, grant us the ever-guiding, path-bearing one; for our heroes, and for our generous people, and for those who cross, grant protection, grant it.
May Agni, praised by us, approach with the hymn, along with Heaven and Earth and the well-praised rivers; seeking cattle and barley, with long-lasting sound, may the red ones choose the best.
That radiance, most wondrous, has been placed for the form; the brilliance of the god, of might, from whom it was born; when the thought approaches and accomplishes, the cows of truth bring forth flowing streams.
The shining one, rich in fathers, always lies down; the second is among the seven nurturing mothers; for the milking of this bull, the women generate the third, the tenfold wise one.
When, from the depths, the sons of strength, lords by power, step forth from the form of the buffalo; when, for the drinker of mead, they, following the sky, Mātariśvan stirs the hidden one.
When it is led away from the highest of the father, the shoots, drinkers of sap, grow on the bough; when both birth-lines of his are stirred, then, shining, he became the pure one in the sky.
Then he entered the mothers, pure, unharmed, he expanded widely; as the former ones climbed, ever-young, he runs among the newer, lower ones.
Then, among the dwellers in heaven, they choose the summoner, seeking favor like Bhaga, they speed forth; the gods, by their will and might, praised by many, you carry the mortal's prayer everywhere, to be placed.
When, driven by wind, the sacrificial fire spreads out, like a neighing horse, unaging, unbroken; its path, dark at the base, black-tongued, of pure birth, they opened the realms.
Like a chariot made with harnesses, it goes with its red limbs to the sky; from there, the black ones, on the right, the sons, seek the speed of the strong one, desiring the might of the hero.
With you, O Agni, Varuṇa, firm in vow, Mitra, Aryaman, the generous, have rejoiced; when, by your will, you, all-pervading, have moved among them, the rim does not overtake the axle.
You, O Agni, youngest, for the one who presses and praises, you bestow treasure, divine, abundant; to you, ever new, youthful in strength, we seek great wealth, like Bhaga, in the assembly.
To us, you grant wealth, shining, householding, like Bhaga, wisdom, and firmness, O upholder; like rays, you guide both generations, O well-willed, you bring the praise of the gods and truth.
And may our radiant, ever-youthful Hotar, delightful, attentive, with a shining chariot, hear us; may Agni, free from error, lead us with the best guides toward wealth and good fortune.
