Desiring wealth, the skilled poets have shaped this speech for you, like craftsmen fashioning a chariot for favor, shaping it for your grace. Adorning you as one worthy of praise in contests, O inspired one, as they would a swift horse in races, for strength and for the winning of all riches.
Indra, you broke ninety fortresses for Purus, for Divodāsa, the great giver, with your thunderbolt, O hero. For Atithigva, you cast down Śambara from the mountain, distributing great wealth with your might, granting all riches with your power.
Indra, in battles you protected the noble worshiper, ever victorious in all assemblies, shining in the contests where the prize is light. You, upholding the law, blinded the skin of the black one for Manu. With skill, you never fail to fulfill all desires, nor do you ever fall short.
The sun, born with great power, set the wheel in motion; the reddish one sends forth his speech at the beginning, the lord sends it forth. When Uśanā came from afar for help, O sage, you granted all blessings to Manu, as Turvaṇa did for all, as Turvaṇa did for all.
O mighty Indra, praised with new hymns for your heroic deeds, you who have shattered fortresses, protect us with your guardianship and strength. With the Divodāsas, being praised, you have grown in greatness, like the sky with each passing day.
For Indra, the mighty sky has bowed down, for Indra, the great earth has widened with gifts of glory. All the gods, united, have placed Indra at the forefront. May all human offerings at the sacrifices be for Indra, may all gifts be for Indra.
At all the sacrifices, they harness you, the one bull, with their own strength, each separately, each with their own desire. We place you, like a boat or a raft, at the yoke of the contest. The priests seek Indra with their hymns, desiring him with their songs.
Three pairs of helpers have spread you out, O Indra, as the winner of the herd, the releaser of the cattle. When the two peoples, seeking cows and light, gather together, you reveal the mighty, companioned thunderbolt, O Indra.
The Purus knew your heroic deeds, O Indra, when you overthrew the autumnal forts, conquering them. You, Indra, lord of strength, have subdued the mortal, the non-sacrificer. You have heated the great earth, you have measured out these waters, delighting in them.
From the very beginning, they have praised your heroic deeds, O bull, in your exhilaration, when you aided the Usijs as a friend. You made a channel for them to flow in battle. They, seeking fame, have mingled one river with another.
May she, the dawn, be pleased with us, and may she be mindful of our hymn and our offering, bringing us the light. When, Indra, you, the bull, are eager to strike down the foe, listen to my newest song, O wise one.
You, Indra, growing strong for us, strike down the unfriendly, hostile mortal with your thunderbolt, O hero. Destroy the one who harms us, hear us, most renowned one. Let no harm come to our journey, let all evil thoughts be far from us.
With you, O generous Indra, may we, aided by your power, overcome in battle, conquer those who challenge us. Let us speak here, in this sacrifice, for the one who pours the Soma. In this rite, let us win the prize, striving for victory.
Bring the prize for the one who seeks the sun, for the one who desires the wealth of the dawn, for the one who seeks it in his own dwelling. Indra struck down Arbuda as is well known, with his head, as is to be proclaimed. May your gifts be with us, may the blessings of the good be with the good.
That ancient bounty of yours, in which they made a dwelling for immortality in the sacrifice, that you have declared, O Indra, so that all may see it with their rays. Indeed, Indra knows it, seeking the cows, among his kin.
Now, as before, your deeds must be spoken of, when you, Indra, opened the enclosure for the Angirases, seeking the herd. You have given them a common share, you win and fight for us. Drive away any lawless one, even one who is angry, from those who press Soma.
He, the hero, watches over those who strive for wealth with their powers, those who seek fame, those who offer praise. Therefore, long life and offspring are granted to him who worships with strength. The inspired thoughts of the gods seek Indra's dwelling, our thoughts turn to him.
You two, Indra and Parvata, with your weapons at the forefront, drive away from us the one who attacks us in battle—strike down that raised foe with your thunderbolt, strike him down. Cast him far away, let him depart to a deep abyss if he has harmed us. O heroic one, surround all our enemies on every side and scatter them utterly on every side.
With truth I purify both heaven and earth; I burn away the deceits, O sinless ones, I destroy the great ones. Where the enemies have been struck down, there the hostile dwellings have been shattered and the strongholds have collapsed.
Even with your mighty force, O stone-wielder, strike the heads of those who intend harm. Cut them down with your sharp foot, with your great, sharp foot.
O generous one, drive away the band of those who intend harm. In the hostile stronghold, in the hostile place, in the great hostile stronghold, in the hostile place.
Of those whose fifty-three with hostile leaps you have swept away—this is your intention, this is your intention when you strike.
Destroy, O Indra, the tawny missile, the demon, the sorceress—strike them down. Remove all the demon-host.
O Indra, unarmored, be steadfast—hear us! For the sky has shone, the earth has not feared, O stone-wielder, by your radiance, the earth has not feared, O stone-wielder. Most powerful are you with your mighty weapons, you advance with fierce weapons. Slayer of the non-man, unconquered hero, with your thrice-seven powers, O hero, with your powers.
He who offers the Soma wins a home, he who offers indeed worships, removing the hatred of the gods, removing the hatred. The one who offers desires strength, a thousandfold is the prize. To the one who offers, Indra gives abundant wealth, he gives abundant wealth.
Come to us, O Vāyu, with your team, eager for the offering; let your steeds bring you here for the first draught of Soma, for the first draught. May your upright thoughts, knowing, stand by you. Come with your team-drawn chariot for the feast, O Vāyu, for the feast.
Let the exhilarating drops gladden you, O Vāyu, the pressed ones, eager for you, skillfully pressed with cows, eager, skillfully pressed. When, indeed, the eager ones seek to bestow, the aids join with skill. The teams, aligned, come for the feast, they speak forth their thoughts for the feast.
Vāyu yokes the red steeds, Vāyu the tawny, Vāyu the swiftest to the chariot, the best at drawing the yoke. Awaken Purandhi, the beloved, as a lover awakens his beloved. Make the two worlds shine forth, O bringer of the dawns, for fame, O bringer of the dawns.
For you, O Vāyu, the pure dawns, far-shining, spread out their lovely garments, bright in their bands, new in their bands. For you the cow, rich in milk, yields all treasures. The Maruts, the youths, drive from the sky, from the heavens.
For you, the bright, pure, swift ones, in the exhilarations, O mighty one, seek nourishment, desiring to enjoy, seeking nourishment. To you the worshipper, desiring, seeks Bhaga for strength. You protect all beings by law, you protect by law from the sun.
