Then was born the swift one, let him rejoice; like the sun at the breaking of dawn he shines forth. O Indra, with those who are fit for offering, pour with the ladle, with the streams, the Soma for the dwelling.
When, in the forest, the blazing one, the sun, at the sacrifice, passed around the enclosure of the cow; when you shine forth with your deeds, following the days, O man, for the cattle, for strength.
Eight from the great heaven, the bays, here, full of splendor, have come to the contest at the fountain. The bay one, your exhilarating draught, they milked for the increase of the cow, the calf, to be mixed with the stones.
You turned back the iron one, the path of the cow, the stone brought by the skillful ones from heaven. There, for Kutsa, O much-invoked, you subdued Shushna with endless weapons, you went around with slayings.
When, in ancient times, the sun, having passed beyond the darkness, O stone-splitter, broke the cloud, the missile of him; even that which was hidden of Shushna's strength, you, O god, struck down, well-bound above the sky.
After you, O mighty one, the great powers have moved; heaven and earth have rejoiced in your deed, O Indra. You, with the great thunderbolt, struck down Vritra lying in the channels, you shattered the stronghold.
You, O Indra, are the leader of men, the helper of men, the best charioteer of the wind. The wise Kavi, Ushanas, fashioned for you the exhilarating, protective thunderbolt for the slaying of Vritra.
You, O sun, with the bay steeds, bring forth the men, you turn the wheel, O Indra, the driver. You carried across ninety ships, you turned back the unoffered, the unyoked.
You, O Indra, protect us from this difficulty, O wielder of the thunderbolt, from distress and danger. Lead us to strength, to chariot-fame, to the awakening of horses; grant us glory and fair praise.
May your favor not depart from us, O generous one, may the seekers find the prize. Grant us, O Maghavan, wealth in cattle; may we be among those who share the grandest feast with you.
Present the offering to Rudra, the gracious, O swift-minded ones, bring the libation for the sacrifice. Praise the heroic Maruts, sons of the sky, as archers, for their might in the heavens and earth.
Like a wife, may the dawn and night, knowing much, increase the first invocation. The bright ones, adorned in splendid garments, shine with the golden beauty of the sun.
May the encompassing one, the bestower of wealth, delight in us; may the wind, strong among waters, delight in us. O Indra and the mountains, may you both protect us; may all the gods grant us passage.
And those who are glorious, white-robed, may they come for the invocation and protection. Call upon the offspring of waters; call upon the mothers of the swift-flowing rivers.
Call upon the roaring offspring of waters for the invocation, proclaim their praise as one proclaims the fame of Arjuna. Speak to Pūṣan, the provider, and to Agni, the giver of wealth.
May Mitra and Varuṇa hear my invocation, and may they hear it in their all-encompassing abode. May the generous, attentive one hear us; may the fertile river, Sindhu, hear us with her waters.
I praise your gift, Varuṇa and Mitra, a hundred cows in the herd, in the enclosure. Bearing beloved chariots, famed chariots, they have swiftly arrived, bringing nourishment.
I praise the bounty of the mighty giver; may we, together with the Nahushas, be strong. The lord who brings horses and chariots from the herds is generous to me.
The man who, hostile to Mitra and Varuṇa, does not praise you, is not favored by you, O mighty ones. He himself places sickness in his heart, when he, through the rites, acts unrighteously.
The Nahusha, strengthened by praise, is a leader of men, renowned for his glory. His generosity flows forth, overcoming obstacles; in every contest, he is ever eager.
Then the Nahusha will come to the invocation of the lord, the kings, delightful, will listen. When the charioteer brings forth the bounty for praise, he comes with greatness.
This is the band, the domain of the lord, thus they spoke in the assembly of the Nahushas. In whom are the glories and the gifts of wealth; may all bring forth strength in the contests.
We delight in the domain of the Nahusha, bearing twice five, they go for food. What are the desired horses, what are the desired rays; the lords, eager, drive forth men.
With golden ears, with jeweled neck, Arṇa—may all the gods grant us passage. The noble songs have swiftly arrived, and the rays have shone forth for both of us.
Four are the swift steeds of the chariot, three are the powers of the victorious king. The chariot of Mitra and Varuṇa is long-watered, its yoke is strong, and the sun is its leader.
The broad chariot of the south was yoked; the gods, immortal, stood upon it. Arya rose from the darkness, leaving it behind, seeking to discern for human dwelling.
She awakened before all the worlds, victorious, great, and generous, bringing the prize. The young woman, shining, rose again; Dawn has come, first in the first invocation.
O divine Dawn, well-born, as you distribute today’s portion among mortals, may the god Savitar here, the wise lord, declare us sinless before the Sun.
She approaches each house, day by day, bearing her name; ever shining, she comes with the desire to bestow, and at every forefront she apportions the treasures.
Sister of Bhaga, kin of Varuṇa, O Dawn, delight first in sweet praise; may he who assigns the portion of evil be left behind—may we conquer him with the right-hand chariot.
