अग्निं दूतं वृणीमहे होतारं विश्ववेदसम् । अस्य यज्ञस्य सुक्रतुम्
We choose Agni as our messenger, the priest who knows all, possessing skill for this sacrifice.
अग्निमग्निं हवीमभिः सदा हवन्त विश्पतिम् । हव्यवाहं पुरुप्रियम्
With offerings, they always invoke Agni, lord of the people, the beloved carrier of oblations.
अग्ने देवाँ इहा वह जज्ञानो वृक्तबर्हिषे । असि होता न ईड्यः
Agni, bring the gods here, born upon the well-laid altar grass; you are the priest worthy of praise.
ताँ उशतो वि बोधय यदग्ने यासि दूत्यम् । देवैरा सत्सि बर्हिषि
Awaken those eager ones, Agni, when you go as messenger; sit with the gods upon the altar.
घृताहवन दीदिवः प्रति ष्म रिषतो दह । अग्ने त्वं रक्षस्विनः
Radiant one, accepting offerings of ghee, burn away the harmful ones; Agni, you are the protector against evil.
अग्निनाग्निः समिध्यते कविर्गृहपतिर्युवा । हव्यवाड्जुह्वास्यः
Through Agni, Agni is kindled, the wise, youthful master of the house, the carrier of offerings, the one who invokes.
कविमग्निमुप स्तुहि सत्यधर्माणमध्वरे । देवममीवचातनम्
Praise Agni, the sage, true to law in the ritual, the god who wards off harm.
यस्त्वामग्ने हविष्पतिर्दूतं देव सपर्यति । तस्य स्म प्राविता भव
He who honors you, Agni, as the lord of offerings and messenger, O god, become his protector.
यो अग्निं देववीतये हविष्माँ आविवासति । तस्मै पावक मृळय
Whoever invokes Agni with offerings for the favor of the gods, to him, O pure one, grant kindness.
स नः पावक दीदिवोऽग्ने देवाँ इहा वह । उप यज्ञं हविश्च नः
So, O radiant Agni, bring the gods here; accept our sacrifice and offering.
स न स्तवान आ भर गायत्रेण नवीयसा । रयिं वीरवतीमिषम्
Bring to us, who praise you, wealth with heroic sons, by the newest Gāyatrī hymn.
अग्ने शुक्रेण शोचिषा विश्वाभिर्देवहूतिभिः । इमं स्तोमं जुषस्व नः
Agni, with your pure flame and all divine invocations, accept this hymn from us.
सुसमिद्धो न आ वह देवाँ अग्ने हविष्मते । होतः पावक यक्षि च
Well-kindled, bring the gods here to the one offering oblations, Agni; as pure priest, worship and serve.
मधुमन्तं तनूनपाद्यज्ञं देवेषु नः कवे । अद्या कृणुहि वीतये
Wise one, make for us today a honey-sweet sacrifice among the gods, for our well-being.
नराशंसमिह प्रियमस्मिन्यज्ञ उप ह्वये । मधुजिह्वं हविष्कृतम्
I call here Narāśaṃsa, dear in this sacrifice, with honeyed tongue, prepared for offering.
अग्ने सुखतमे रथे देवाँ ईळित आ वह । असि होता मनुर्हितः
Agni, in the most pleasant chariot, bring the gods here when invoked; you are the priest established by Manu.
स्तृणीत बर्हिरानुषग्घृतपृष्ठं मनीषिणः । यत्रामृतस्य चक्षणम्
Let the wise spread the sacrificial grass, coated with clarified butter, where the vision of immortality is found.
वि श्रयन्तामृतावृधो द्वारो देवीरसश्चतः । अद्या नूनं च यष्टवे
Let the divine doors, nourished by immortality, open wide on every side, today and now, for the offering.
नक्तोषासा सुपेशसास्मिन्यज्ञ उप ह्वये । इदं नो बर्हिरासदे
I call Night and Dawn, adorned with beauty, to this sacrifice; let them sit upon our sacred grass.
ता सुजिह्वा उप ह्वये होतारा दैव्या कवी । यज्ञं नो यक्षतामिमम्
I call the divine priests, skilled and eloquent, with well-shaped tongues; let them perform our sacrifice.
इळा सरस्वती मही तिस्रो देवीर्मयोभुवः । बर्हिः सीदन्त्वस्रिधः
May Ilā, Sarasvatī, and Mahī, the three gracious goddesses, sit upon the sacred grass, unhindered.
इह त्वष्टारमग्रियं विश्वरूपमुप ह्वये । अस्माकमस्तु केवलः
Here I call Tvaṣṭar, the foremost, of manifold forms; let him be solely ours.
अव सृजा वनस्पते देव देवेभ्यो हविः । प्र दातुरस्तु चेतनम्
O Lord of the Forest, release the offering for the gods; let the giver's intention be fulfilled.
स्वाहा यज्ञं कृणोतनेन्द्राय यज्वनो गृहे । तत्र देवाँ उप ह्वये
With svāhā, perform the sacrifice for Indra in the sacrificer's house; there I call the gods.
ऐभिरग्ने दुवो गिरो विश्वेभिः सोमपीतये । देवेभिर्याहि यक्षि च
With these praises, O Agni, come with all the gods to drink Soma; approach and enjoy.
आ त्वा कण्वा अहूषत गृणन्ति विप्र ते धियः । देवेभिरग्न आ गहि
The Kanvas have called you; the wise sing your praises; come here, Agni, with the gods.
इन्द्रवायू बृहस्पतिं मित्राग्निं पूषणं भगम् । आदित्यान्मारुतं गणम्
Indra and Vāyu, Bṛhaspati, Mitra, Agni, Pūṣan, Bhaga, the Ādityas, and the Marut host.
प्र वो भ्रियन्त इन्दवो मत्सरा मादयिष्णवः । द्रप्सा मध्वश्चमूषदः
Let the exhilarating drops, eager and delightful, be carried to you; the shining juices, pressed from honey.
ईळते त्वामवस्यवः कण्वासो वृक्तबर्हिषः । हविष्मन्तो अरंकृतः
The Kanvas, seeking help, with well-spread sacred grass, offering oblations, honor you.
घृतपृष्ठा मनोयुजो ये त्वा वहन्ति वह्नयः । आ देवान्सोमपीतये
Those fires, yoked by thought, with clarified butter on their backs, bring you, O gods, to drink Soma.
