समुद्रादूर्मिमुदियर्ति वेनो नभोजाः पृष्ठं हर्यतस्य दर्शि । ऋतस्य सानावधि विष्टपि भ्राट् समानं योनिमभ्यनूषत व्राः
Vena rises as a wave from the ocean, ascending to the back of the shining one in the sky; reaching the summit of truth, the clans have sought the same origin.
समानं पूर्वीरभि वावशानास्तिष्ठन्वत्सस्य मातरः सनीळाः । ऋतस्य सानावधि चक्रमाणा रिहन्ति मध्वो अमृतस्य वाणीः
The many ancient mothers, eager, stand close to the calf, nourishing him; moving to the summit of truth, they seek the streams of honey and immortality.
जानन्तो रूपमकृपन्त विप्रा मृगस्य घोषं महिषस्य हि ग्मन् । ऋतेन यन्तो अधि सिन्धुमस्थुर्विदद्गन्धर्वो अमृतानि नाम
Knowing his form, the sages did not harm him; they heard the bellow of the bull, the cry of the stag; journeying by truth, they stood by the river—Gandharva discovered the immortal names.
अप्सरा जारमुपसिष्मियाणा योषा बिभर्ति परमे व्योमन् । चरत्प्रियस्य योनिषु प्रियः सन्सीदत्पक्षे हिरण्यये स वेनः
The Apsaras approaches her lover, the maiden bears him in the highest heaven; the beloved moves among the beloved abodes, Vena settles on the golden wing.
नाके सुपर्णमुप यत्पतन्तं हृदा वेनन्तो अभ्यचक्षत त्वा । हिरण्यपक्षं वरुणस्य दूतं यमस्य योनौ शकुनं भुरण्युम्
When the eagle, golden-winged, was flying in the sky, those who longed for Vena beheld you with their hearts—Varuṇa’s messenger, the bird, the swift one, in Yama’s abode.
ऊर्ध्वो गन्धर्वो अधि नाके अस्थात्प्रत्यङ्चित्रा बिभ्रदस्यायुधानि । वसानो अत्कं सुरभिं दृशे कं स्वर्ण नाम जनत प्रियाणि
The Gandharva stood upright in the sky, bearing the bright weapons of this one; wearing a fragrant garment for all to see, he generated the dear golden names.
द्रप्सः समुद्रमभि यज्जिगाति पश्यन्गृध्रस्य चक्षसा विधर्मन् । भानुः शुक्रेण शोचिषा चकानस्तृतीये चक्रे रजसि प्रियाणि
When the drop moves toward the ocean, observing with the vulture’s eye, the radiant one shines with pure brilliance, making dear things in the third region of space.
इमं नो अग्न उप यज्ञमेहि पञ्चयामं त्रिवृतं सप्ततन्तुम् । असो हव्यवाळुत नः पुरोगा ज्योगेव दीर्घं तम आशयिष्ठाः
O Agni, come to this our sacrifice, fivefold, three-stranded, seven-threaded; you, bringer of offerings, lead us forward—like the sun, may you drive away the long darkness.
अदेवाद्देवः प्रचता गुहा यन्प्रपश्यमानो अमृतत्वमेमि । शिवं यत्सन्तमशिवो जहामि स्वात्सख्यादरणीं नाभिमेमि
As a god, I depart from the ungodly, secretly perceiving, I attain immortality; I abandon what is unblessed, though it seems blessed, and from my own friendship I do not approach the fire-stick’s navel.
पश्यन्नन्यस्या अतिथिं वयाया ऋतस्य धाम वि मिमे पुरूणि । शंसामि पित्रे असुराय शेवमयज्ञियाद्यज्ञियं भागमेमि
Seeing the guest of another, I, swift as a bird, have measured many abodes of truth; I proclaim to the father, the mighty lord, that I come to the worthy share, not the unworthy.
बह्वीः समा अकरमन्तरस्मिन्निन्द्रं वृणानः पितरं जहामि । अग्निः सोमो वरुणस्ते च्यवन्ते पर्यावर्द्राष्ट्रं तदवाम्यायन्
For many years I have acted within, choosing Indra, I abandon the father; Agni, Soma, and Varuṇa are shaken—around the ruler’s seat, they have come together.
निर्माया उ त्ये असुरा अभूवन्त्वं च मा वरुण कामयासे । ऋतेन राजन्ननृतं विविञ्चन्मम राष्ट्रस्याधिपत्यमेहि
These mighty lords have become manifest by their own power, and you, Varuṇa, desire me; O king, discerning truth from falsehood, come to the sovereignty of my realm.
इदं स्वरिदमिदास वाममयं प्रकाश उर्वन्तरिक्षम् । हनाव वृत्रं निरेहि सोम हविष्ट्वा सन्तं हविषा यजाम
This is the light, this is the wealth, this is the wide shining space between earth and sky; let us strike down Vṛtra, come forth, Soma—let us worship the one to be worshipped with offering.
कविः कवित्वा दिवि रूपमासजदप्रभूती वरुणो निरपः सृजत् । क्षेमं कृण्वाना जनयो न सिन्धवस्ता अस्य वर्णं शुचयो भरिभ्रति
The poet, by his poetry, has set a form in the sky; Varuṇa, unopposed, sends forth the waters; like people making a safe home, the pure rivers bear his color.
ता अस्य ज्येष्ठमिन्द्रियं सचन्ते ता ईमा क्षेति स्वधया मदन्तीः । ता ईं विशो न राजानं वृणाना बीभत्सुवो अप वृत्रादतिष्ठन्
They cling to his supreme power; by their own nature they dwell here, delighting; like subjects choosing a king, they, fierce, have stood apart from Vṛtra.
बीभत्सूनां सयुजं हंसमाहुरपां दिव्यानां सख्ये चरन्तम् । अनुष्टुभमनु चर्चूर्यमाणमिन्द्रं नि चिक्युः कवयो मनीषा
They call him the Swan, united with the terrible ones, moving in the fellowship of the divine waters and the heavens; the wise, with insight, have discerned Indra, chanting the Anushtubh, and seeking him.
अहं रुद्रेभिर्वसुभिश्चराम्यहमादित्यैरुत विश्वदेवैः । अहं मित्रावरुणोभा बिभर्म्यहमिन्द्राग्नी अहमश्विनोभा
I move with the Rudras and the Vasus; I move with the Ādityas and all the gods. I bear both Mitra and Varuṇa, and I bear both Indra and Agni, and I bear both the Aśvins.
अहं सोममाहनसं बिभर्म्यहं त्वष्टारमुत पूषणं भगम् । अहं दधामि द्रविणं हविष्मते सुप्राव्ये यजमानाय सुन्वते
I bear the nourishing Soma, I bear Tvaṣṭṛ, Pūṣan, and Bhaga. I bestow wealth upon the one who offers, to the worshipper who pours the libation with devotion.
अहं राष्ट्री संगमनी वसूनां चिकितुषी प्रथमा यज्ञियानाम् । तां मा देवा व्यदधुः पुरुत्रा भूरिस्थात्रां भूर्यावेशयन्तीम्
I am the sovereign, the gatherer of treasures, the wise, the first among those worthy of sacrifice. The gods have distributed me in many places, making me abundant and entering into many forms.
मया सो अन्नमत्ति यो विपश्यति यः प्राणिति य ईं शृणोत्युक्तम् । अमन्तवो मां त उप क्षियन्ति श्रुधि श्रुत श्रद्धिवं ते वदामि
Through me, he eats food who sees, who breathes, who hears what is spoken. Those without understanding dwell near me; listen, you who hear, I speak to you what is worthy of faith.
अहमेव स्वयमिदं वदामि जुष्टं देवेभिरुत मानुषेभिः । यं कामये तंतमुग्रं कृणोमि तं ब्रह्माणं तमृषिं तं सुमेधाम्
I alone declare this, which is pleasing to gods and men. Whomever I desire, I make him powerful, I make him a priest, a sage, a wise one.
अहं रुद्राय धनुरा तनोमि ब्रह्मद्विषे शरवे हन्तवा उ । अहं जनाय समदं कृणोम्यहं द्यावापृथिवी आ विवेश
I stretch the bow for Rudra, for the arrow to strike the hater of prayer. I stir up the people for battle; I have entered both heaven and earth.
अहं सुवे पितरमस्य मूर्धन्मम योनिरप्स्वन्तः समुद्रे । ततो वि तिष्ठे भुवनानु विश्वोतामूं द्यां वर्ष्मणोप स्पृशामि
I create the father on the summit of this world; my origin is within the waters, in the ocean. From there, I extend over all beings, and I touch that heaven with my greatness.
अहमेव वात इव प्र वाम्यारभमाणा भुवनानि विश्वा । परो दिवा पर एना पृथिव्यैतावती महिना सं बभूव
I, like the wind, breathe forth all beings; I surpass all the worlds, beyond heaven, beyond this earth. So vast am I in my greatness.
न तमंहो न दुरितं देवासो अष्ट मर्त्यम् । सजोषसो यमर्यमा मित्रो नयन्ति वरुणो अति द्विषः
No harm, no evil, do the gods allow to reach the mortal whom Aryaman, Mitra, and Varuṇa, united in purpose, lead beyond his enemies.
तद्धि वयं वृणीमहे वरुण मित्रार्यमन् । येना निरंहसो यूयं पाथ नेथा च मर्त्यमति द्विषः
This, indeed, we choose, O Varuṇa, Mitra, Aryaman: by which, free from harm, you protect and lead the mortal beyond his foes.
ते नूनं नोऽयमूतये वरुणो मित्रो अर्यमा । नयिष्ठा उ नो नेषणि पर्षिष्ठा उ नः पर्षण्यति द्विषः
May Varuṇa, Mitra, Aryaman, truly lead us to safety; may they guide us, may they carry us beyond our enemies.
यूयं विश्वं परि पाथ वरुणो मित्रो अर्यमा । युष्माकं शर्मणि प्रिये स्याम सुप्रणीतयोऽति द्विषः
You, Varuṇa, Mitra, Aryaman, protect all the world; may we be dear under your shelter, well-guided beyond our foes.
आदित्यासो अति स्रिधो वरुणो मित्रो अर्यमा । उग्रं मरुद्भी रुद्रं हुवेमेन्द्रमग्निं स्वस्तयेऽति द्विषः
The Ādityas—Varuṇa, Mitra, Aryaman—surpass all obstacles; I invoke the mighty Rudra with the Maruts, Indra, and Agni for well-being, beyond our enemies.
नेतार ऊ षु णस्तिरो वरुणो मित्रो अर्यमा । अति विश्वानि दुरिता राजानश्चर्षणीनामति द्विषः
May Varuṇa, Mitra, Aryaman, the leaders, guide us; may these kings of men lead us beyond all evils, beyond our foes.
