अग्ने हंसि न्यत्रिणं दीद्यन्मर्त्येष्वा । स्वे क्षये शुचिव्रत
O Agni, you slay the restrainer, shining among mortals, in your own abode, pure in your vow.
उत्तिष्ठसि स्वाहुतो घृतानि प्रति मोदसे । यत्त्वा स्रुचः समस्थिरन्
You rise up, well-invoked, delighting in the offerings of ghee, for which the ladles have been prepared for you.
स आहुतो वि रोचतेऽग्निरीळेन्यो गिरा । स्रुचा प्रतीकमज्यते
When thus invoked, Agni, worthy of praise, shines forth; he is anointed on the surface with the ladle.
घृतेनाग्निः समज्यते मधुप्रतीक आहुतः । रोचमानो विभावसुः
Agni is anointed with ghee, his face sweet as honey when invoked; the radiant one shines brightly.
जरमाणः समिध्यसे देवेभ्यो हव्यवाहन । तं त्वा हवन्त मर्त्याः
Growing old, you blaze up, O carrier of offerings to the gods; mortals call upon you.
तं मर्ता अमर्त्यं घृतेनाग्निं सपर्यत । अदाभ्यं गृहपतिम्
Mortals worship you, Agni, the immortal, with ghee, the inviolable lord of the house.
अदाभ्येन शोचिषाग्ने रक्षस्त्वं दह । गोपा ऋतस्य दीदिहि
With your invincible flame, O Agni, burn up the demon; shine as the guardian of truth.
स त्वमग्ने प्रतीकेन प्रत्योष यातुधान्यः । उरुक्षयेषु दीद्यत्
So you, Agni, with your face, repel the sorcerers; shine brightly in the spacious abodes.
तं त्वा गीर्भिरुरुक्षया हव्यवाहं समीधिरे । यजिष्ठं मानुषे जने
They have kindled you, O carrier of offerings, with hymns in the spacious abodes, you who are most fit for sacrifice among men.
इति वा इति मे मनो गामश्वं सनुयामिति । कुवित्सोमस्यापामिति
Thus, thus my mind thinks: 'May I obtain a cow, a horse'; perhaps I may drink of Soma.
प्र वाता इव दोधत उन्मा पीता अयंसत । कुवित्सोमस्यापामिति
My thoughts, stirred like the winds, have been excited, intoxicated; perhaps I may drink of Soma.
उन्मा पीता अयंसत रथमश्वा इवाशवः । कुवित्सोमस्यापामिति
My mind has soared, as horses draw a chariot with speed; perhaps this is the effect of Soma.
उप मा मतिरस्थित वाश्रा पुत्रमिव प्रियम् । कुवित्सोमस्यापामिति
My thought has approached me, like a cow to her beloved calf; perhaps this is the effect of Soma.
अहं तष्टेव वन्धुरं पर्यचामि हृदा मतिम् । कुवित्सोमस्यापामिति
I wander, like a craftsman around his work, seeking wisdom with my heart; perhaps this is the effect of Soma.
नहि मे अक्षिपच्चनाच्छान्त्सुः पञ्च कृष्टयः । कुवित्सोमस्यापामिति
Not even five tribes could restrain me; perhaps this is the effect of Soma.
नहि मे रोदसी उभे अन्यं पक्षं चन प्रति । कुवित्सोमस्यापामिति
Neither both worlds, nor even another wing, can hold me back; perhaps this is the effect of Soma.
अभि द्यां महिना भुवमभीमां पृथिवीं महीम् । कुवित्सोमस्यापामिति
I surpass the sky with greatness, and the vast earth as well; perhaps this is the effect of Soma.
हन्ताहं पृथिवीमिमां नि दधानीह वेह वा । कुवित्सोमस्यापामिति
Indeed, I could place this earth here or there as I wish; perhaps this is the effect of Soma.
ओषमित्पृथिवीमहं जङ्घनानीह वेह वा । कुवित्सोमस्यापामिति
I could dry up the earth or shake it here or there; perhaps this is the effect of Soma.
दिवि मे अन्यः पक्षोऽधो अन्यमचीकृषम् । कुवित्सोमस्यापामिति
One of my wings is in the sky, the other I have made below; perhaps this is the effect of Soma.
अहमस्मि महामहोऽभिनभ्यमुदीषितः । कुवित्सोमस्यापामिति
I am mighty and exalted, stirred up with power; perhaps this is the effect of Soma.
गृहो याम्यरंकृतो देवेभ्यो हव्यवाहनः । कुवित्सोमस्यापामिति
I go to my home, adorned, the carrier of offerings for the gods; perhaps this is the effect of Soma.
तदिदास भुवनेषु ज्येष्ठं यतो जज्ञ उग्रस्त्वेषनृम्णः । सद्यो जज्ञानो नि रिणाति शत्रूननु यं विश्वे मदन्त्यूमाः
This, indeed, is the greatest among beings: from whom was born the fierce, splendid, heroic one. Newly born, he immediately overcomes enemies, and all the powers delight in him.
वावृधानः शवसा भूर्योजाः शत्रुर्दासाय भियसं दधाति । अव्यनच्च व्यनच्च सस्नि सं ते नवन्त प्रभृता मदेषु
Growing strong with might, possessing abundant strength, he brings fear to the enemy for the servant. He protects and nourishes, and they bow to him in the gatherings of joy.
त्वे क्रतुमपि वृञ्जन्ति विश्वे द्विर्यदेते त्रिर्भवन्त्यूमाः । स्वादोः स्वादीयः स्वादुना सृजा समदः सु मधु मधुनाभि योधीः
All choose your wisdom; twice, thrice these powers arise. The sweetest of the sweet, release the joy; with honey, contend with the honeyed ones.
इति चिद्धि त्वा धना जयन्तं मदेमदे अनुमदन्ति विप्राः । ओजीयो धृष्णो स्थिरमा तनुष्व मा त्वा दभन्यातुधाना दुरेवाः
Thus, indeed, the sages praise you as the conqueror of wealth in every joy. Be strong, bold, firm in your body; may harmful spirits not defeat you.
त्वया वयं शाशद्महे रणेषु प्रपश्यन्तो युधेन्यानि भूरि । चोदयामि त आयुधा वचोभिः सं ते शिशामि ब्रह्मणा वयांसि
With you, we are victorious in battles, seeing many acts of war. I urge your weapons with words; I strengthen your energies with prayer.
स्तुषेय्यं पुरुवर्पसमृभ्वमिनतममाप्त्यमाप्त्यानाम् । आ दर्षते शवसा सप्त दानून्प्र साक्षते प्रतिमानानि भूरि
I would praise the many-shaped, mighty, unconquered, helper of helpers. By his power, he shows the seven gifts; he reveals many forms.
नि तद्दधिषेऽवरं परं च यस्मिन्नाविथावसा दुरोणे । आ मातरा स्थापयसे जिगत्नू अत इनोषि कर्वरा पुरूणि
You have placed the lower and the higher, in whose shelter we dwell at home. You establish the mothers, the moving ones; you drive forth many swift things.
इमा ब्रह्म बृहद्दिवो विवक्तीन्द्राय शूषमग्रियः स्वर्षाः । महो गोत्रस्य क्षयति स्वराजो दुरश्च विश्वा अवृणोदप स्वाः
These hymns, born of Bṛhaddiva, the wise and radiant, are declared for Indra, the foremost, the bringer of light; he rules over the great lineage, self-ruling, and has opened all distant places, granting us protection.
