A thousandfold, fifteen are the praises; as vast as heaven and earth, so great is that. A thousandfold is his greatness, a thousand; as far as the Brahman extends, so far is speech.
Who, wise, knows the union of the meters? Who has set forth speech to the sacrificial seat? Whom do they call the eighth, born of truth? Who, indeed, perceived the two bays of Indra?
Some move around the edge of the earth; others stand yoked at the chariot's poles. They divide the share of labor among themselves, when Yama is established in the house.
Brilliant is the breast of the bright, youthful bird, who approaches his mothers to be nourished. If the unwed one has given birth and then sustains, he at once grows great, fulfilling his mission.
Agni, indeed, is the name given to him, the bestower of food, who, young, consumes the woods with his flame. With his eager tongue, he, self-ordained, swiftly advances, roaring like a bull over the dry grass.
That Indu, pressed for you, unyielding as stone, god-delighting, swelling and pouring forth like the ocean—like fire blazing with flame, radiant, of great resolve, advancing along the paths—
For whom, though aged, never worn, the winds cannot shake or move—like mighty warriors striving for victory, like Trita, they do not fail but excel for the sake of the offering.
He is Agni, most Kanva-like, friend of Kanvas, strong against the enemy within and without; may Agni protect the one who praises, may Agni guard the leaders, may Agni grant them our protection.
Most vigorous, fit for battle, of noble descent, moving among the three tribes, following Jātavedas; even the boldest cannot withstand his force, for the mightiest is not to be overcome in the contest.
Thus Agni, together with mortals and generous ones, is to be praised, son of strength, with men; like well-disposed friends, devoted to truth, like the heavens with their splendor, they surpass humankind.
O son of strength, mighty one, thus the bull's voice praises you, who are lauded; we will praise you, and with you as our champion, may we hold a long and prosperous life.
Thus to you, Agni, the sons of Vṛṣṭihavya, praised you, O sage; protect them and their leaders who praise, 'vaṣaṭ, vaṣaṭ,' they have raised their voices, 'homage, homage,' they have raised their voices.
Drink the Soma, for great power; drink, most mighty, to slay the foe; drink for wealth, for strength, when invoked; drink the sweet, pressed Soma, Indra, become strong.
Drink of this rich, flowing Soma, Indra, the best of the pressed, well-prepared; grant us well-being, rejoice in mind, come near, bring us radiant good fortune.
Let the heavenly Soma intoxicate you, Indra, let that which is pressed on earth intoxicate you; let that by which you made wide space intoxicate you, let that by which you destroy enemies intoxicate you.
Let Indra, the bull, come with his two tawny steeds to the twice-barred, well-poured drink; for the sake of cattle, for the pressed, flowing honey, let the slayer of foes, the bull, be invigorated together.
Burn away the sharp, burning weapons of the sorcerers, cut down their firm defenses; to you, fierce one, I give strength and power—go forth, strike down the enemies in battle.
Expand, Indra, your fame and strength, like a firm bow, against the hostile ones; growing strong with us, with your powers, unassailable, increase your own might.
This offering, O bountiful one, is prepared for you; accept it, O king, with joy; for you the Soma is pressed, for you it is cooked—eat, Indra, and drink of the flowing one.
Eat, Indra, of the prepared offerings; accept for us the cooked and the pressed Soma; eager, we will honor you—may the wishes of the sacrificer be fulfilled.
I invoke Indra and Agni with fair words, as one launches a boat on the river with oars; as the gods move around with this, who grant us wealth and bring forth treasures.
The gods do not bring hunger or death, nor do the spirits approach one who eats; but wealth does not stay with the one who does not give, nor does the one who does not share find a supporter.
He who gives food to the hungry, to the thirsty, to the one who comes in need, makes his mind firm, serves before others, and even in distress does not lack a supporter.
He is truly generous who gives food in his house to one who desires it, who moves among the thin and hungry; he becomes a friend to the one who calls upon him, and he makes friendship even with strangers.
He is not a friend who does not give to a companion, to one who seeks help and remains loyal; one should turn away from such a person, there is no home with him; even at the time of death, one would wish for another who gives.
One should give to the one who is lower, who is in need of food; let him look upon the path of the greater; for, as the wheels of a chariot keep turning, so do riches move from one to another.
The one without understanding obtains food in vain—I speak the truth, it is his destruction; he does not foster friendship, nor does he support a companion; he alone eats sin who eats alone.
The ploughman makes ready the ploughshare, he prepares the field; by his actions he clears the path; let the speaker speak, but let the giver be greater; let the one who gives surpass the one who does not.
The one-footed surpasses the two-footed, the two-footed overtakes the three-footed from behind; the four-footed comes upon the two-footed in the gathering, observing the rows as he takes his place.
Even the two hands are not equal, nor do two mothers give milk equally; even the strengths of twins are not the same, and though relatives, they do not all give equally.
