I will now proclaim your former heroic deeds, O Indra, your earliest acts; your wrath, unwearied, split the stone, and you made the cow known to the inspired one.
Sit down among the hosts, O lord of hosts; they call you the wisest of the wise; without you, nothing is done, O mighty one—Maghavan, sing a splendid hymn.
Look upon us, O Maghavan, and those who are lowly; as a friend, be mindful of your friends, O lord of wealth; make battle for us, victorious in battle, truly strong; even for the unoffering, grant us a share of wealth.
Heaven and earth, with awareness, together with all the gods, strengthened his power in the darkness; when he, performing, increased his greatness and strength by drinking Soma.
Vishnu, with might, bore that greatness in the darkness, holding the bright drop of honey; with the gods, Indra the generous, with his companions, struck down Vritra and became the most excellent.
When, bearing weapons, you stood together for battle against Vritra, the serpent, seeking glory; all the Maruts, with you, increased your fierce and mighty power.
At birth, he drove away his rivals; the hero beheld the battle for manly strength; he split the rock, released the waters, and with his own power, firmly established the broad sky.
Then Indra, with his strength, took the lead in the sacrifice; he surpassed even heaven and earth in might. Exulting, he seized the iron thunderbolt, a blessing for Mitra, for Varuna, and for the worshipper.
Here, the mighty deeds of Indra, the far-seeing, were praised; they delighted his spirit. When the fierce one, with his power, struck down Vritra, who held the waters, shrouded in darkness.
Those first heroic deeds which were accomplished, when the two strove together in greatness—Indra, called upon of old, destroyed the deep darkness, and by his might cast down the foe.
All the gods then increased your manly deeds, by words full of Soma. With Indra's slaying of Vritra, his greatness was established; like fire with its jaws, he brought forth food for the thirsty.
With abundant skill, with words and hymns, with friendships, let us declare these friendships. Indra, subduing the noisy and the cunning, hears the faithful for their protection.
You bear many gifts, your own horses; with these, may our praises reach their destination. With easy paths, may we cross all troubles; grant us, O wise one, a wide and deep refuge today.
The hot offerings, all around, spread out in threefold measure; Mātariśvan went to their favor. The streams of heaven, desiring to give, hastened; the gods recognized the sun, the lord of strength.
Three goddesses of destruction attend the altar; the long-hearing fires truly know them. The wise have discerned their secret foundation, those that are in the far and hidden rites.
A young woman, four-plaited, beautifully adorned, with clarified butter as her aspect, prepares the rites. Upon her, two splendid birds have settled, where the gods have fixed their share.
One splendid bird entered the ocean; he beholds this whole world and all beings. With purified mind I saw him nearby; the mother called to him, and he called to his mother.
The wise, the seers, with their words, describe the splendid bird, though he is one, in many ways. They place the meters in the sacrifices, and measure out twelve vessels of Soma.
Arranging thirty-six and four, they place the meters, and then the twelfth. The wise, discerning the sacrifice, set the chariot in motion with the Ṛk and Sāman hymns.
Fourteen are his great powers, which the wise lead forth with sevenfold speech. Who here will declare the path to the sacred stream, by which they drink the pressed Soma?
A thousandfold, fifteen are the praises; as vast as heaven and earth, so great is that. A thousandfold is his greatness, a thousand; as far as the Brahman extends, so far is speech.
Who, wise, knows the union of the meters? Who has set forth speech to the sacrificial seat? Whom do they call the eighth, born of truth? Who, indeed, perceived the two bays of Indra?
Some move around the edge of the earth; others stand yoked at the chariot's poles. They divide the share of labor among themselves, when Yama is established in the house.
Brilliant is the breast of the bright, youthful bird, who approaches his mothers to be nourished. If the unwed one has given birth and then sustains, he at once grows great, fulfilling his mission.
Agni, indeed, is the name given to him, the bestower of food, who, young, consumes the woods with his flame. With his eager tongue, he, self-ordained, swiftly advances, roaring like a bull over the dry grass.
That Indu, pressed for you, unyielding as stone, god-delighting, swelling and pouring forth like the ocean—like fire blazing with flame, radiant, of great resolve, advancing along the paths—
For whom, though aged, never worn, the winds cannot shake or move—like mighty warriors striving for victory, like Trita, they do not fail but excel for the sake of the offering.
He is Agni, most Kanva-like, friend of Kanvas, strong against the enemy within and without; may Agni protect the one who praises, may Agni guard the leaders, may Agni grant them our protection.
Most vigorous, fit for battle, of noble descent, moving among the three tribes, following Jātavedas; even the boldest cannot withstand his force, for the mightiest is not to be overcome in the contest.
Thus Agni, together with mortals and generous ones, is to be praised, son of strength, with men; like well-disposed friends, devoted to truth, like the heavens with their splendor, they surpass humankind.
