य इमे द्यावापृथिवी जनित्री रूपैरपिंशद्भुवनानि विश्वा । तमद्य होतरिषितो यजीयान्देवं त्वष्टारमिह यक्षि विद्वान्
He who, with forms, has adorned all these worlds—heaven and earth, the two mothers—today, guided by the priest, offer sacrifice to that god Tvaṣṭṛ, knowing him.
उपावसृज त्मन्या समञ्जन्देवानां पाथ ऋतुथा हवींषि । वनस्पतिः शमिता देवो अग्निः स्वदन्तु हव्यं मधुना घृतेन
Send forth, arranging properly, the offerings for the gods in due order; let the Lord of the Forest, the appeaser, god Agni, taste the oblation with honey and ghee.
सद्यो जातो व्यमिमीत यज्ञमग्निर्देवानामभवत्पुरोगाः । अस्य होतुः प्रदिश्यृतस्य वाचि स्वाहाकृतं हविरदन्तु देवाः
Agni, born at once, measured out the sacrifice and became the leader of the gods; at the priest's command, in the speech of truth, may the gods taste the oblation offered with 'svāhā.'
मनीषिणः प्र भरध्वं मनीषां यथायथा मतयः सन्ति नृणाम् । इन्द्रं सत्यैरेरयामा कृतेभिः स हि वीरो गिर्वणस्युर्विदानः
O thoughtful ones, bring forth your thought as each man's ideas arise; let us move Indra with true deeds, for he is the hero, the singer, the knower of knowledge.
ऋतस्य हि सदसो धीतिरद्यौत्सं गार्ष्टेयो वृषभो गोभिरानट् । उदतिष्ठत्तविषेणा रवेण महान्ति चित्सं विव्याचा रजांसि
Indeed, the inspiration of truth has shone forth from the seat of truth; the bull, son of the house, has come with cows; he has risen with force and with a roar, and even the great spaces he has separated.
इन्द्रः किल श्रुत्या अस्य वेद स हि जिष्णुः पथिकृत्सूर्याय । आन्मेनां कृण्वन्नच्युतो भुवद्गोः पतिर्दिवः सनजा अप्रतीतः
Indra, indeed, by his fame knows this; for he is victorious, path-maker for the sun; making this one firm, he became the unshaken, lord of the cow, of heaven, ancient, unconquered.
इन्द्रो मह्ना महतो अर्णवस्य व्रतामिनादङ्गिरोभिर्गृणानः । पुरूणि चिन्नि तताना रजांसि दाधार यो धरुणं सत्यताता
Indra, by his greatness, praised by the Angirases, established the laws of the great ocean; he stretched out many regions and upheld the support, the foundation of truth.
इन्द्रो दिवः प्रतिमानं पृथिव्या विश्वा वेद सवना हन्ति शुष्णम् । महीं चिद्द्यामातनोत्सूर्येण चास्कम्भ चित्कम्भनेन स्कभीयान्
Indra knows the measure of heaven and earth; he knows all the places and strikes down Śuṣṇa; he stretched out the great sky with the sun, and with his pillar he propped up even the support.
वज्रेण हि वृत्रहा वृत्रमस्तरदेवस्य शूशुवानस्य मायाः । वि धृष्णो अत्र धृषता जघन्थाथाभवो मघवन्बाह्वोजाः
For with the thunderbolt, the slayer of Vṛtra struck down Vṛtra, the godless one's magic; O bold one, here with your boldness you have shattered them—thus, O bountiful one, you became strong with the might of your arms.
सचन्त यदुषसः सूर्येण चित्रामस्य केतवो रामविन्दन् । आ यन्नक्षत्रं ददृशे दिवो न पुनर्यतो नकिरद्धा नु वेद
The banners of the Yadus, shining with the dawn and the sun, have found delight in radiance; when the constellation was seen, like the sky, no one knows from where it came, nor where it has truly gone.
दूरं किल प्रथमा जग्मुरासामिन्द्रस्य याः प्रसवे सस्रुरापः । क्व स्विदग्रं क्व बुध्न आसामापो मध्यं क्व वो नूनमन्तः
Indeed, the earliest of these waters went far away, which, at Indra’s urging, flowed forth; where, indeed, is their source, where their foundation, where is their middle, and where now is their end?
सृजः सिन्धूँरहिना जग्रसानाँ आदिदेताः प्र विविज्रे जवेन । मुमुक्षमाणा उत या मुमुच्रेऽधेदेता न रमन्ते नितिक्ताः
The rivers, grasped by the serpent, were released; then they rushed forth with speed; those who wished to be set free were indeed liberated, but those who were restrained did not find delight.
सध्रीचीः सिन्धुमुशतीरिवायन्सनाज्जार आरितः पूर्भिदासाम् । अस्तमा ते पार्थिवा वसून्यस्मे जग्मुः सूनृता इन्द्र पूर्वीः
Together, the rivers, roaring, hastened toward the Sindhu; the old barrier was shattered by the opener of the way; those ancient earthly riches have gone to rest, O Indra, many gracious ones have come to us.
इन्द्र पिब प्रतिकामं सुतस्य प्रातःसावस्तव हि पूर्वपीतिः । हर्षस्व हन्तवे शूर शत्रूनुक्थेभिष्टे वीर्या प्र ब्रवाम
Indra, drink the pressed Soma as you desire in the morning offering, for your first draught is indeed at dawn; rejoice, hero, in order to strike down enemies; with hymns, we proclaim your heroic deeds.
यस्ते रथो मनसो जवीयानेन्द्र तेन सोमपेयाय याहि । तूयमा ते हरयः प्र द्रवन्तु येभिर्यासि वृषभिर्मन्दमानः
With your chariot, swifter than thought, O Indra, come here to drink Soma; let your bays hasten eagerly, with which you, the bull, delight as you ride.
हरित्वता वर्चसा सूर्यस्य श्रेष्ठै रूपैस्तन्वं स्पर्शयस्व । अस्माभिरिन्द्र सखिभिर्हुवानः सध्रीचीनो मादयस्वा निषद्य
With the brilliance and radiance of the sun, touch your body with the finest forms; with us, your friends, O Indra, being invoked, rejoice together, sitting down.
यस्य त्यत्ते महिमानं मदेष्विमे मही रोदसी नाविविक्ताम् । तदोक आ हरिभिरिन्द्र युक्तैः प्रियेभिर्याहि प्रियमन्नमच्छ
Whose greatness, O Indra, in the intoxications, these vast heavens and earth have not surpassed; to that home, with your yoked bays, come, Indra, with your beloved ones, come to the dear food.
यस्य शश्वत्पपिवाँ इन्द्र शत्रूननानुकृत्या रण्या चकर्थ । स ते पुरंधिं तविषीमियर्ति स ते मदाय सुत इन्द्र सोमः
You, Indra, who have always drunk, have destroyed enemies, performing mighty deeds without imitation; he arouses for you the generous one’s strength, for your exhilaration, Indra, Soma is pressed.
इदं ते पात्रं सनवित्तमिन्द्र पिबा सोममेना शतक्रतो । पूर्ण आहावो मदिरस्य मध्वो यं विश्व इदभिहर्यन्ति देवाः
This vessel, filled for you, O Indra, drink the Soma, O hundred-powered one; the call is full of intoxicating sweetness, which all the gods desire to enjoy.
वि हि त्वामिन्द्र पुरुधा जनासो हितप्रयसो वृषभ ह्वयन्ते । अस्माकं ते मधुमत्तमानीमा भुवन्सवना तेषु हर्य
For indeed, O Indra, many peoples, with offerings, call upon you, O bull; these most honeyed libations of ours are for you—rejoice in these at the pressing.
प्र त इन्द्र पूर्व्याणि प्र नूनं वीर्या वोचं प्रथमा कृतानि । सतीनमन्युरश्रथायो अद्रिं सुवेदनामकृणोर्ब्रह्मणे गाम्
I will now proclaim your former heroic deeds, O Indra, your earliest acts; your wrath, unwearied, split the stone, and you made the cow known to the inspired one.
नि षु सीद गणपते गणेषु त्वामाहुर्विप्रतमं कवीनाम् । न ऋते त्वत्क्रियते किं चनारे महामर्कं मघवञ्चित्रमर्च
Sit down among the hosts, O lord of hosts; they call you the wisest of the wise; without you, nothing is done, O mighty one—Maghavan, sing a splendid hymn.
अभिख्या नो मघवन्नाधमानान्सखे बोधि वसुपते सखीनाम् । रणं कृधि रणकृत्सत्यशुष्माभक्ते चिदा भजा राये अस्मान्
Look upon us, O Maghavan, and those who are lowly; as a friend, be mindful of your friends, O lord of wealth; make battle for us, victorious in battle, truly strong; even for the unoffering, grant us a share of wealth.
तमस्य द्यावापृथिवी सचेतसा विश्वेभिर्देवैरनु शुष्ममावताम् । यदैत्कृण्वानो महिमानमिन्द्रियं पीत्वी सोमस्य क्रतुमाँ अवर्धत
Heaven and earth, with awareness, together with all the gods, strengthened his power in the darkness; when he, performing, increased his greatness and strength by drinking Soma.
तमस्य विष्णुर्महिमानमोजसांशुं दधन्वान्मधुनो वि रप्शते । देवेभिरिन्द्रो मघवा सयावभिर्वृत्रं जघन्वाँ अभवद्वरेण्यः
Vishnu, with might, bore that greatness in the darkness, holding the bright drop of honey; with the gods, Indra the generous, with his companions, struck down Vritra and became the most excellent.
वृत्रेण यदहिना बिभ्रदायुधा समस्थिथा युधये शंसमाविदे । विश्वे ते अत्र मरुतः सह त्मनावर्धन्नुग्र महिमानमिन्द्रियम्
When, bearing weapons, you stood together for battle against Vritra, the serpent, seeking glory; all the Maruts, with you, increased your fierce and mighty power.
जज्ञान एव व्यबाधत स्पृधः प्रापश्यद्वीरो अभि पौंस्यं रणम् । अवृश्चदद्रिमव सस्यदः सृजदस्तभ्नान्नाकं स्वपस्यया पृथुम्
At birth, he drove away his rivals; the hero beheld the battle for manly strength; he split the rock, released the waters, and with his own power, firmly established the broad sky.
आदिन्द्रः सत्रा तविषीरपत्यत वरीयो द्यावापृथिवी अबाधत । अवाभरद्धृषितो वज्रमायसं शेवं मित्राय वरुणाय दाशुषे
Then Indra, with his strength, took the lead in the sacrifice; he surpassed even heaven and earth in might. Exulting, he seized the iron thunderbolt, a blessing for Mitra, for Varuna, and for the worshipper.
इन्द्रस्यात्र तविषीभ्यो विरप्शिन ऋघायतो अरंहयन्त मन्यवे । वृत्रं यदुग्रो व्यवृश्चदोजसापो बिभ्रतं तमसा परीवृतम्
Here, the mighty deeds of Indra, the far-seeing, were praised; they delighted his spirit. When the fierce one, with his power, struck down Vritra, who held the waters, shrouded in darkness.
या वीर्याणि प्रथमानि कर्त्वा महित्वेभिर्यतमानौ समीयतुः । ध्वान्तं तमोऽव दध्वसे हत इन्द्रो मह्ना पूर्वहूतावपत्यत
Those first heroic deeds which were accomplished, when the two strove together in greatness—Indra, called upon of old, destroyed the deep darkness, and by his might cast down the foe.
