The generous do not perish, nor do they go to ruin, nor are they harmed, nor do they grieve, O generous ones; all this world, all that is bright, is given to the givers.
The generous have won the fragrant womb at the beginning, the generous have won well-adorned brides; the generous have won the drink within, the generous have won those who go uninvited.
For the generous, they groom the swift horse, for the generous, the maidens adorn themselves; this dwelling of the generous is like a lotus pond, beautifully adorned, splendid as a divine abode.
The horses of Bhoja, well-harnessed, bear him; his splendid chariot moves with the gift. The gods protect Bhoja in battles; Bhoja is the conqueror of enemies in the gatherings.
What were you seeking, O Sarama, when you journeyed far away, leaving the path and wandering to distant places? What was your intention, what was your resolve? How did you cross the waters of the Rasā?
Sent as Indra’s messenger, I travel, desiring the great treasure hidden by the Panis. I crossed over out of fear; thus I passed through the waters of the Rasā.
What is Indra like, O Sarama, what is his appearance, for whom you have come as messenger from afar? As you go, let us make an alliance; then may he become the lord of cattle for us.
I do not know that one who is to be feared, who sent me as messenger from afar. The deep-flowing streams do not conceal him; struck down by Indra, O Panis, you lie vanquished.
These cows, O Sarama, whom you sought, fly around the ends of heaven, O fortunate one. Who will release them for us, armed as they are? Our weapons, too, are sharp.
Your words, O Panis, are unworthy; let your bodies be weak and unsteady. Let your path be impassable; may Bṛhaspati grant us both safety.
This treasure, O Sarama, lies at the base of the rock, heaped up with cows, horses, and riches. The Panis, who are vigilant guardians, protect it; you have come to the place marked by their footsteps.
Here came the sages, nourished by Soma—the Ayasyas, the Angirases, the Navagvas. They divided this wide wealth of cattle; and this, O Panis, is the word they spoke.
Thus you, Sarama, have arrived, compelled by the divine force. I would have made you my sister; do not go back. O fortunate one, let us not divide the cows.
I do not recognize brotherhood or sisterhood; Indra knows, and so do the mighty Angirases. When the Panis concealed the cows, desiring them, they covered themselves, but Indra found the better way.
Far away, the Panis hid themselves, thinking themselves superior; let the cows go forth, measuring their way by truth. Bṛhaspati, Soma, the stone, and the inspired sages found those hidden ones.
They spoke first, those who had committed the original transgression—Salila, Mātariśvan, the well-digger. The water-bearers, the blazing, the mighty, the bringers of joy—the divine waters, first-born by truth.
King Soma was the first to restore the Brahman's wife, though she had been taken away. Varuṇa and Mitra followed after; Agni, the priest, led her, holding her by the hand.
With the hand alone must the pledge be taken for her, the Brahman's wife—so they declared. She is not to be given to the messenger; thus is the kingdom of the Kṣatriya protected.
The ancient gods spoke about her, and the seven seers who sat in penance. The wife of the Brahman, brought near, is formidable; she holds a difficult place in the highest heaven.
The student of sacred knowledge walks, avoiding enmity; he becomes a part of the gods. By him, Bṛhaspati found the wife, led away by Soma, as the gods do a sacrificial ladle.
The gods indeed restored her, and men also did so. The kings, upholding truth, restored the Brahman's wife.
Having restored the priest's wife, making her free from guilt with the gods, they partake of the earth's nourishment, singing the great hymn.
Kindled today in the home of man, O god Jātavedas, you sacrifice to the gods; bring here Mitra and Varuṇa, knowing, for you are the messenger, the sage, the wise one.
O Tanūnapāt, who travels the path of truth, anointed with honey, sweet-tongued by nature, accept our thoughts with understanding, and grant our sacrifice; make our ritual successful among the gods.
Worthy of praise and worship, come, O Agni, together with the Vasus; you are the mighty priest of the gods—by this, being invoked, you become the most worthy of sacrifice.
Let the sacred grass be spread eastward on the earth, at the forefront of the dwelling, at the beginning of the days; let the broad, excellent seat extend widely for the gods, for Aditi, as a pleasant resting place.
Let the shining, spacious seats be spread out, like wives adorned for their husbands; let the divine, great doors, all-embracing, be easy of access for the gods.
Let the one who awakens the sacrifice come near; let Dawn and Night sit together in their place; the divine maidens, great and splendid, bearing radiant adornment, hold their shining beauty.
The divine priests, first and eloquent, measuring the sacrifice for men to perform, inspiring the poets in the assemblies, point out the ancient light in the east.
May Bhāratī, Iḻā, and Sarasvatī, the three goddesses, come to our sacrifice, attentive among men; may they sit on this sacred grass, bringing happiness, possessing true insight.
