श्रिये ते पृश्निरुपसेचनी भूच्छ्रिये दर्विररेपाः । यया स्वे पात्रे सिञ्चस उत्
For your splendor, may the speckled one be your libation; for your splendor, may the shining ladle be pure, by which you pour into your own vessel.
शतं वा यदसुर्य प्रति त्वा सुमित्र इत्थास्तौद्दुर्मित्र इत्थास्तौत् । आवो यद्दस्युहत्ये कुत्सपुत्रं प्रावो यद्दस्युहत्ये कुत्सवत्सम्
Whether a hundred times, O lord, Sumitra has thus praised you, or Durmitra has thus praised you; when you aided the son of Kutsa in slaying the foe, when you aided Kutsa himself in slaying the foe.
उभा उ नूनं तदिदर्थयेथे वि तन्वाथे धियो वस्त्रापसेव । सध्रीचीना यातवे प्रेमजीगः सुदिनेव पृक्ष आ तंसयेथे
Both of you now surely desire this, you stretch out your bodies and minds like weavers their threads; harmoniously, you wish to go together, like cattle on a fair day, you draw near to him.
उष्टारेव फर्वरेषु श्रयेथे प्रायोगेव श्वात्र्या शासुरेथः । दूतेव हि ष्ठो यशसा जनेषु माप स्थातं महिषेवावपानात्
Like a camel you rest in the thickets, like a mare you are guided by the rein; like a messenger you are renowned among people, do not stand still, like a buffalo from the watering place.
साकंयुजा शकुनस्येव पक्षा पश्वेव चित्रा यजुरा गमिष्टम् । अग्निरिव देवयोर्दीदिवांसा परिज्मानेव यजथः पुरुत्रा
With harness joined, like the wings of a bird, like the varied colors of a beast, you are eager to go; like Agni shining among the gods, like a charioteer you perform sacrifices in many places.
आपी वो अस्मे पितरेव पुत्रोग्रेव रुचा नृपतीव तुर्यै । इर्येव पुष्ट्यै किरणेव भुज्यै श्रुष्टीवानेव हवमा गमिष्टम्
Come to us as a son to his father, as a mighty one with radiance, as a lord of men to victory; as a strong man to prosperity, as a ray to the arm, as one who listens to the call, be most eager to approach our invocation.
वंसगेव पूषर्या शिम्बाता मित्रेव ऋता शतरा शातपन्ता । वाजेवोच्चा वयसा घर्म्येष्ठा मेषेवेषा सपर्या पुरीषा
Like a branch to the nourisher, like a pod to the friend, like a hundredfold reward to the righteous, like a prize to the swift, like vigor to the heated, like a ram to the flock, like a worshipper to the offering, come to us.
सृण्येव जर्भरी तुर्फरीतू नैतोशेव तुर्फरी पर्फरीका । उदन्यजेव जेमना मदेरू ता मे जराय्वजरं मरायु
Like a plough to the field, like a swift runner to the race, like a strong one to the contest, like a vessel to the water, like a drinker to the intoxicating draught, grant to me ageless vigor and undying life.
पज्रेव चर्चरं जारं मरायु क्षद्मेवार्थेषु तर्तरीथ उग्रा । ऋभू नापत्खरमज्रा खरज्रुर्वायुर्न पर्फरत्क्षयद्रयीणाम्
Like a lover to his beloved, like a strong one to the goal, like a craftsman to his work, like a horse to the chariot, O mighty ones, like the sons of strength, unwearied, may you not falter in the dwelling of riches.
घर्मेव मधु जठरे सनेरू भगेविता तुर्फरी फारिवारम् । पतरेव चचरा चन्द्रनिर्णिङ्मनऋङ्गा मनन्या न जग्मी
Like honey in the heat, like a treasure in the belly, like a share to the fortunate, like a covering to the body, like a bird to its nest, like a shining one to the moon, like a mind to its aim, may you come to us.
बृहन्तेव गम्भरेषु प्रतिष्ठां पादेव गाधं तरते विदाथः । कर्णेव शासुरनु हि स्मराथोऽंशेव नो भजतं चित्रमप्नः
Like greatness in the depths, like firmness in the foot, crossing over difficulties, like an ear to the listener, remember us; like a portion, grant us a splendid share.
आरङ्गरेव मध्वेरयेथे सारघेव गवि नीचीनबारे । कीनारेव स्वेदमासिष्विदाना क्षामेवोर्जा सूयवसात्सचेथे
Like a vessel of honey, you are filled; like a cow in the low-lying pasture; like a border, you are moistened with sweat; like strength from the fertile earth, you are united with nourishment.
ऋध्याम स्तोमं सनुयाम वाजमा नो मन्त्रं सरथेहोप यातम् । यशो न पक्वं मधु गोष्वन्तरा भूतांशो अश्विनोः काममप्राः
May we prosper in praise, may we gain the prize; come to us with our hymn, O you who ride in the chariot. May our glory be ripe, like honey among the cows; may we obtain the desire of the Ashvins.
आविरभून्महि माघोनमेषां विश्वं जीवं तमसो निरमोचि । महि ज्योतिः पितृभिर्दत्तमागादुरुः पन्था दक्षिणाया अदर्शि
Great and manifest has become the bounty of these, releasing all living beings from darkness. The great light, given by the ancestors, has come; the broad path of giving has been revealed.
उच्चा दिवि दक्षिणावन्तो अस्थुर्ये अश्वदाः सह ते सूर्येण । हिरण्यदा अमृतत्वं भजन्ते वासोदाः सोम प्र तिरन्त आयुः
High in the sky stand those who give gifts, they who give horses, strong with the sun; those who give gold attain immortality, those who give garments, O Soma, extend their life.
दैवी पूर्तिर्दक्षिणा देवयज्या न कवारिभ्यो नहि ते पृणन्ति । अथा नरः प्रयतदक्षिणासोऽवद्यभिया बहवः पृणन्ति
Divine is the act of giving, worthy of the gods, not to be withheld from the deserving; but those men who give with devoted hands, they fill many with what is good.
शतधारं वायुमर्कं स्वर्विदं नृचक्षसस्ते अभि चक्षते हविः । ये पृणन्ति प्र च यच्छन्ति संगमे ते दक्षिणां दुहते सप्तमातरम्
They praise with offerings the wind with a hundred streams, the sun, the knower of light, the men with vision; those who give and send forth at the gathering, they milk the gift, the seven-mothered one.
दक्षिणावान्प्रथमो हूत एति दक्षिणावान्ग्रामणीरग्रमेति । तमेव मन्ये नृपतिं जनानां यः प्रथमो दक्षिणामाविवाय
The giver is first to be called, the giver is foremost in the assembly; I consider him the lord of men, who is the first to offer the gift.
तमेव ऋषिं तमु ब्रह्माणमाहुर्यज्ञन्यं सामगामुक्थशासम् । स शुक्रस्य तन्वो वेद तिस्रो यः प्रथमो दक्षिणया रराध
Him they call sage, him priest, him singer of sacrifice, him chanter of hymns and reciter of verses; he knows the three forms of the bright one, who is the first to be gladdened by the gift.
दक्षिणाश्वं दक्षिणा गां ददाति दक्षिणा चन्द्रमुत यद्धिरण्यम् । दक्षिणान्नं वनुते यो न आत्मा दक्षिणां वर्म कृणुते विजानन्
The gift gives a horse, the gift gives a cow, the gift gives the moon and gold; he who seeks food for himself by the gift, the wise one makes the gift his armor.
न भोजा मम्रुर्न न्यर्थमीयुर्न रिष्यन्ति न व्यथन्ते ह भोजाः । इदं यद्विश्वं भुवनं स्वश्चैतत्सर्वं दक्षिणैभ्यो ददाति
The generous do not perish, nor do they go to ruin, nor are they harmed, nor do they grieve, O generous ones; all this world, all that is bright, is given to the givers.
भोजा जिग्युः सुरभिं योनिमग्रे भोजा जिग्युर्वध्वं या सुवासाः । भोजा जिग्युरन्तःपेयं सुराया भोजा जिग्युर्ये अहूताः प्रयन्ति
The generous have won the fragrant womb at the beginning, the generous have won well-adorned brides; the generous have won the drink within, the generous have won those who go uninvited.
भोजायाश्वं सं मृजन्त्याशुं भोजायास्ते कन्या शुम्भमाना । भोजस्येदं पुष्करिणीव वेश्म परिष्कृतं देवमानेव चित्रम्
For the generous, they groom the swift horse, for the generous, the maidens adorn themselves; this dwelling of the generous is like a lotus pond, beautifully adorned, splendid as a divine abode.
भोजमश्वाः सुष्ठुवाहो वहन्ति सुवृद्रथो वर्तते दक्षिणायाः । भोजं देवासोऽवता भरेषु भोजः शत्रून्समनीकेषु जेता
The horses of Bhoja, well-harnessed, bear him; his splendid chariot moves with the gift. The gods protect Bhoja in battles; Bhoja is the conqueror of enemies in the gatherings.
किमिच्छन्ती सरमा प्रेदमानड्दूरे ह्यध्वा जगुरिः पराचैः । कास्मेहितिः का परितक्म्यासीत्कथं रसाया अतरः पयांसि
What were you seeking, O Sarama, when you journeyed far away, leaving the path and wandering to distant places? What was your intention, what was your resolve? How did you cross the waters of the Rasā?
इन्द्रस्य दूतीरिषिता चरामि मह इच्छन्ती पणयो निधीन्वः । अतिष्कदो भियसा तन्न आवत्तथा रसाया अतरं पयांसि
Sent as Indra’s messenger, I travel, desiring the great treasure hidden by the Panis. I crossed over out of fear; thus I passed through the waters of the Rasā.
कीदृङ्ङिन्द्रः सरमे का दृशीका यस्येदं दूतीरसरः पराकात् । आ च गच्छान्मित्रमेना दधामाथा गवां गोपतिर्नो भवाति
What is Indra like, O Sarama, what is his appearance, for whom you have come as messenger from afar? As you go, let us make an alliance; then may he become the lord of cattle for us.
नाहं तं वेद दभ्यं दभत्स यस्येदं दूतीरसरं पराकात् । न तं गूहन्ति स्रवतो गभीरा हता इन्द्रेण पणयः शयध्वे
I do not know that one who is to be feared, who sent me as messenger from afar. The deep-flowing streams do not conceal him; struck down by Indra, O Panis, you lie vanquished.
इमा गावः सरमे या ऐच्छः परि दिवो अन्तान्सुभगे पतन्ती । कस्त एना अव सृजादयुध्व्युतास्माकमायुधा सन्ति तिग्मा
These cows, O Sarama, whom you sought, fly around the ends of heaven, O fortunate one. Who will release them for us, armed as they are? Our weapons, too, are sharp.
असेन्या वः पणयो वचांस्यनिषव्यास्तन्वः सन्तु पापीः । अधृष्टो व एतवा अस्तु पन्था बृहस्पतिर्व उभया न मृळात्
Your words, O Panis, are unworthy; let your bodies be weak and unsteady. Let your path be impassable; may Bṛhaspati grant us both safety.
