He who, with eager devotion, offers strong Soma to Indra finds his life blessed with abundant wealth. For such a worshiper, Indra wields his mighty weapon at dawn, striking down enemies and rivals, slaying the Vṛtra and all that obstructs prosperity. In Indra, the one upon whom we place our praise, we see the generous bestower of favor. To him we turn with our desires, asking, “O bountiful one, fulfill our longing!” Let even distant foes tremble at his presence, and let all glories bow before him. Indra, mighty and oft-invoked, drive our enemies far away, as you have done for your devotees before. Grant us barley and cattle, O Indra, and bestow wisdom and strength that wins prizes upon the singer who praises you. The potent, abundant streams of Soma flow to you, and you, O Maghavan, never withhold your generosity, but carry great wealth to the one who presses the Soma in your honor. The swift and radiant goddess, who knows the right time for every act, prevails; she seeks out what is done for the gods. Those who desire the gods do not hold back their wealth, and the self-sustaining one releases prosperity to his friend. With cows, with barley, with all kinds of food, we seek, O much-invoked Indra, to overcome distant enemies. May we, together with our leaders, win the highest riches through our own striving. May Bṛhaspati guard us from behind, from above, and from below, protecting us from all harm; and may Indra stand before us and in our midst, granting safe passage to his friends and protecting us as a true companion. All our thoughts, radiant and harmonious, reach out to Indra, drawn by the light of his presence. They embrace him as people embrace their lord, as a noble youth, Maghavan, is sought for help. My mind does not turn away from you, O Indra; in you alone, O much-invoked, I place my longing. Like a king, wondrous one, take your seat on this sacred grass and let this Soma be your drink. Indra, who increases abundance and removes hunger, is the true lord of wealth. For him, in the channels, the seven rivers flow strong, nourished by his bull-like might. Like birds settling upon a tree with fine leaves, the pressing stones approach the joyous Indra; his face flashes with power like lightning, and he knows the light that brings the new day. The swift one, searching out what is done for the gods, conquers even the sun, O Maghavan; no other, neither ancient nor new, can match your heroic power. Maghavan has distributed wealth among all the people, calling forth the cows for the tribes; he whom Śakra delights in at the sacrifices stands firm against the fierce ones with strong Somās. Like waters flowing to a river, the pressing stones come to Indra as streams to a lake. The sages, at the seat of offering, increase his greatness, just as barley grows with divine rain. Like a bull enraged, Indra rushes through the spaces, he who has made the waters for Arya’s wives; Maghavan finds the light for the sacrificer who presses Soma for long life. Let the axe shine forth with light, let the cow of truth yield abundantly as before; let the radiant one shine with his brilliance, the pure lord of good shine with golden splendor. With cows, with barley, with all kinds of food, O much-invoked one, we seek to conquer distant enemies; may we, with our leaders, win the foremost riches through our own efforts. May Bṛhaspati protect us from behind, from above, and from below, shielding us from harm. Let Indra stand before us and in our midst, a friend who grants safe passage to his companions. Let Indra, lord of his own, come for exhilaration, he who, by his law, is powerful and praiseworthy; with broad vision, he overcomes all obstacles by his immense strength. Your chariot, O lord, is well-made, your horses well-yoked; your thunderbolt shines in your hand, O king. Come by the good path, O ruler, and let your strength grow and flourish. Let Indra’s team bring the thunder-armed king, the mighty ones, strong and powerful, bring him to us; let them bring the bull with true might to share in our feast. Unite with the lord who holds the vessel, who is mindful, the pillar of strength and support; take up vigor, grasp it, and, as those renowned for their deeds, grow in might. Come to us with riches, for I praise you and bring you the best wishes; approach, O Soma-bearer. You rule, you sit here, established on the sacred grass, and your vessels are secured by your law. The first divine offerings were made separately, glorious and hard to overcome; those who could not ascend the sacrificial ship, let them not settle among the wise. Let those who are distant and those who are near be united; their horses, though difficult to harness, are now yoked. Thus, those who are earlier and those who are later are gathered where there are many acts and provisions. The trembling mountains held firm, the sky thundered, and the midspace was stirred in anger. The wise one, aligned, spreads out, and the mighty one, having drunk the exhilarating Soma, proclaims hymns. I hold this good goad for you, by which, O Maghavan, you break the hoofs of the enemy. In this pressing, let your power be present; in the offering, O Maghavan, be awake to your share. With cows, with barley, dispel far-off hostility, O much-invoked one, and all hunger. May we, with the foremost kings, win wealth through our own assembly. Let Bṛhaspati protect us from behind, from above, and from below, from harm. Let Indra be before us, and in the middle, our friend; may he make a path for friends. Agni was first born from the sky; from us, the second, the knower of all births. The third, in the waters, is ceaselessly kindled; the self-born nurture him. We know you, Agni, in threefold ways; we know your three abodes, widely distributed. We know your highest name, hidden; we know the source from which you have come. In the ocean, you are kindled by the self-born; in the waters, by the seers; in the sky, Agni, you are the udder. In the third realm, you stand; in the lap of the waters, the mighty ones have increased you. Agni roared, like thunder in the sky; the earth stirred, the plants were adorned. Born suddenly, he shone forth, kindled; the two worlds glow with his radiance within. He is the generous one, the support of riches, the fulfillment of thoughts, the guardian of Soma. The wealthy son of strength, king in the waters, shines foremost, kindled by the dawns. He is the sign of all, the embryo of the world; born, he filled the two worlds. He even split the rock for the path, when five peoples worshipped Agni. The pure, wise, and radiant one, Agni, immortal among mortals, is established. He sends forth smoke, reddish and bearing, with bright flame, he illuminates the sky. Shining, golden, he spreads widely; difficult to restrain, radiant for glory. Agni became immortal with two lives, when the sky, rich in seed, gave birth to him. Whatever good, bright offering you make today, O god Agni, the cake rich in ghee, lead it forth, bring it to the wealthy one, to the favor, O youngest, beloved by the gods. Distribute that to those who are famed, O Agni; with hymns, share what is praised. Beloved of the sun, beloved of Agni, he becomes, breaking forth with birth and with the act of creation. O Agni, those who sacrifice have entrusted to you all treasures and desirable things across the days; desiring wealth with you, the Usij-s have opened up the cattle-rich enclosure. Thus, the hymns resound: to Indra, the mighty and generous, who grants wealth and victory; and to Agni, the radiant and wise, who carries the offerings and bestows prosperity. Protected by Bṛhaspati and led by Indra, nourished by Agni’s fire, the people flourish, striving and united, ever seeking the blessings of the gods.
