Swiftly, the sacred Soma, with his thousand shining streams, flowed through the filter, destined for mighty Indra. Anointed with the very essence of sweetness, this radiant drop was prepared for Indra the Bull, to bring him exhilaration and strength. For the glory of the gods, the tawny Soma was purified, clothed in the coolness of the waters. Adorned and powerful, he delighted Indra again and again, driving away all obstacles like a force of nature. Now, Soma was invoked to flow forth with vigor, breaking through all barriers with his might, passing beyond his foes as a debtor escapes his creditors. The worshippers rejoiced in him, especially when pressed in the sovereignty of battle, for he advanced towards the prizes like a champion. By his power, the purified Soma generated the sun and the nourishing milk, hastening alongside the abundant cows, ever generous. Among mortals, Soma bestowed immortality, upholding the law of truth and sustaining the beautiful and eternal. Always flowing, he brought strength to the seeker. His fame pierced through all, like a never-failing fountain for the people, bearing arrows and moving with mighty arms. The shining ones, beholding that ancient wealth, pursued the heavenly riches, even as the god Savitar spread out his covering over all. For Soma, the earliest sages prepared well-laid grass and set their thoughts upon him for great strength and renown. Thus, Soma inspired all to heroism. The ancient, nourishing essence of heaven flowed down from the great sky, and the gods sang together at Indra’s birth. When Soma’s might enveloped these two worlds and all beings, he stood firm among the hosts, like a bull among cattle. Purified in the unfailing vessel, Soma sparkled like a playful child, flowing with a thousand streams and carrying a hundred prizes. This honey-sweet wave, purified and pleasant, flowed for Indra, knowing the paths to strength and wide expanse. Soma was called to purify himself further, overcoming the hostile, dispelling demons, and removing strongholds, conquering enemies with his own weapon. With shining radiance, purified by the tawny ones, Soma overcame all hostilities with his own power, just as the sun conquers darkness with its rays. The stream of pressed Soma shone forth, circling through all forms with his seven-mouthed hymns. He knew the wealth of the merchants and cleansed it with the mothers in his own abode, establishing his radiance with the three-colored tawny ones. Like a song from afar, his brilliance was established where thoughts contend. Soma journeyed toward the former region, discerning and striving with his rays, like a visible divine chariot. The hymns exalted Indra for victory, and Soma became the thunderbolt, unfailing in battles. Among all the diverse peoples, each with their own vows and crafts—the carpenter shaping chariots, the healer healing, the priest longing to press Soma for Indra—all called upon Soma to flow for Indra. With aged herbs, with leaves of birds, and with stones, the smith and the priest alike desired to press Soma for Indra. The poet, the healer, the gatherer, the splitter, the announcer—all, seeking wealth, stood like cows, calling Soma to flow for Indra. Even the horse, drawing the pleasant chariot, the laughing companion, the tail, the two breakers, and the frog in the water—all desired Soma to flow for Indra. Let Indra, the slayer of Vritra, drink Soma at Sharyanavati, gaining strength and preparing for great heroism. Soma was called to flow forth, to fly from the eastern region, pressed with truth, faith, and austerity, always for Indra. The daughter of the sun brought forth the mighty Soma, grown by Parjanya; the Gandharvas received him and placed his essence in Soma. Soma, king and truth-speaker, performed deeds of reality and faith, fashioned by the creator. From the mighty one, truth flowed; the juices mingled, and the essences, purified by hymns, joined together for Indra. Where the priest recited the metrical speech, Soma was exalted with the stone, and joy was produced. The worshippers prayed to be placed in the world of immortality, where the light is eternal and heaven is established, where King Yama dwells, where the rivers flow, and where there is free movement in the triple heaven full of light. There, in the realm of fulfilled desires, in the world of sustenance and satisfaction, in the place of joy and delight, they wished for immortality—always calling, “O Soma, flow for Indra.” Those who followed the paths of the flowing Soma were called well-born, and Soma, with his wisdom, circled around Indra. Kashyapa, with the hymns of the sages, exalted Angiras, and all revered Soma, the king, born as lord of the plants. There were seven directions with various suns, and seven priests as ritual officiants; Soma was invoked to protect with the seven Adityas. With his royal, purified offering, Soma was asked to protect the worshippers, letting no adversary cross them, and to flow around Indra. At the beginning of all things, the mighty one—Agni—stood upright among the Dawns, driving out darkness and bringing forth light. Agni, shining with radiant form, was born and reached all dwellings. Born as the embryo of earth and heaven, Agni, beautiful, was carried in the plants; the brilliant child cried out above the mothers, casting away the darkness. Thus, the sacred Soma and Agni, in their flowing and shining, brought strength, immortality, and radiance to gods and mortals alike, upholding truth, dispelling darkness, and leading all towards the realm of light and fulfillment.
