The sacred Soma, pressed and purified, begins its journey through the filter, its shining stream bestowing strength. This most honeyed essence is prepared for Indra, for Vishnu, and for all the gods. As it flows, the mothers—those nurturing forces—cherish the tawny Soma within the filter, tending to it as cows would a newborn calf, guiding it gently along its course. Glorious and radiant, Soma moves forward, its fame spreading far and wide. With brilliant rays, it enters the homes of worshippers, striking down all hostile powers. With a mighty vow, this purifying one embraces both sky and earth, unveiling what was hidden, revealing its greatness. The leaders and priests gather, ready to press the Soma for the delight of all. Friends are called to drive away the meddling, long-tongued dog, ensuring the sanctity of the rite. As Soma is pressed, it flows forth with the energy of a spirited horse, fit for noble deeds. The wise and gentle-hearted approach Soma, free from anger, bringing universal wisdom to the sacrifice, urging the ritual forward with their stones. The pressed Soma, sweetest of all, brings joy to Indra. Filtered and pure, it flows onward, carrying its delights to the gods. Indu, the purified Soma, is offered to Indra, as decreed by the gods themselves. He is lord of speech, master of sacrifice, ruler of all power. With a thousand streams, Soma is cleansed, vast as an ocean, seeking the power of speech. He is the lord of riches, companion to Indra day after day. As Pūṣan, the bringer of wealth and fortune, Soma flows purified, revealing the expanse of heaven and earth. The eager cows, beloved and swift, hasten to taste the exhilaration, while the Soma drops, shining and pure, make their way onward. O Purifying One, grant us that supreme glory by which you surpass all peoples, by which we may attain wealth. The Soma drops, purified and friendly, flow to us, opening the path to approach the divine. Well-pressed, stainless, self-sustaining, and luminous, they bring nourishment from all sides, spreading out on the skin of the cow, bestowing wealth upon us. These wise Somas bear their heads high, radiant as suns, steadfast and moving through clarified butter. Let no mortal reject the word of the Soma-presser; let the lawless be driven away, just as the Bhṛgus once destroyed the demon. At dawn, Soma extends itself, like a son nestled in his parents’ lap, swift as a lover to his beloved, eager as a suitor to the bride’s home. This heroic, skillful being, upholder of heaven and earth, spreads through the purifier, like a craftsman returning to his origin. Soma, roaring and mighty, is washed with streams upon the cow’s skin, the tawny one released from the press for Indra. The child of the great ones, Soma urges on the brightness of truth, beloved by all, encompassing all with no equal. Entering the hidden place of Trita’s stone, Soma reaches the heart of the sacrifice, dwelling in the seven sacred abodes. With three supports, by Trita’s power, Soma measures out wealth, his wise nature determining the right paths. Seven mothers, creative and nurturing, adorn the newborn Soma for glory; steadfast among riches, he perceives what is to be known. In his ordinance, all the gods unite without deceit, and pleasures become truly delightful when they accept Soma. The twin sisters, growing in truth, bring forth a lovely child for vision—Soma, the poet, mighty and much desired at the sacrifice. In harmony, the swift mothers of truth shape the sacrifice, adorning Soma, the human-born. With insight and shining eyes, Soma opens the gates of heaven, urging on the light of truth as he advances in the offering. Raise your voice for the purified, wise Soma, the sustainer who delights in thoughtful offerings. Shining with the radiance of cows, Soma flows through unexhausted coverings, making three abodes as he is purified. He circles the vessel filled with sweetness, passing through the unexhausted filter, while the seven songs of the seers resound to him. As the leader of thoughts, Soma, purified and all-god, unassailable and bright, moves around the mixing bowl. Following the divine ordinances, the gods are called to join Indra at the chariot, and the immortal, purified Soma is praised by the singers. Like a victorious charioteer, Soma, pressed for the gods, rushes forth, far-seeing and pure. Friends gather, singing for the purified one, adorning him for glory as a child is adorned with offerings. The god-inspired exhilaration is released, life-sustaining, like a calf with its mothers, for the twice-born. The skill-bringing Soma is purified for the enjoyment of all, as for Mitra and Varuna, the most auspicious. The singers invoke Soma, the knower of wealth, promising to clothe him in the colors of cows. O drop, lord of delights, divine Apsaras, be our best guide, as a friend to a friend, leading us on our path. Make us steadfast and whole, O god, ward off the godless and rootless, and drive away all double harm from us. Thus, the story of Soma unfolds—purified, exalted, and adored—bestower of strength, joy, and abundance, the radiant heart of sacrifice and the beloved of gods and mortals alike.
