He whose mind is that of a seer, who inspires seers and shines with radiant light, Soma, the thousand-guided one, follows the ancient paths trodden by the sages. Seeking the third abode, this mighty bull Soma reveals his brilliance, moving ever in harmony with the radiant cosmic order. The eagle, the noble bird, comes bearing the pressing stones, carrying the drops of Soma, armed and ready. As the finder of cows, he joins the rolling wave of the waters, the vast ocean, and the bull Soma discerns the fourth abode, ever seeking higher realms. Soma, like a bright and youthful being, purifies his form, swift as a horse racing for wealth. Like a bull, he circles the vessel with his herd, bellowing mightily, and enters the mixing bowl with great energy. "Flow, O Indu, O purified one," the sages call, "with your great powers, bellowing, pass through all barriers. Play in the mixing bowl, O purified Soma, and let your exhilarating essence gladden mighty Indra." Your great streams pour forth, O Soma. By night, you enter the bowls accompanied by the cows. You come singing, wise and melodious, inviting friendship and never enmity. Driving away all foes, you, O purified Soma, advance like a beloved husband praised in song. Settling in the woods like a bird upon its perch, Soma, now purified, rests in the sacred bowls. The shining streams of purified Soma flow to you as richly-yielding cows come to the wife. The tawny one, much-invoked and brought forth in the waters, bellows in the bowl of the gods. His swift, golden, purified streams mingle with the gods, as Soma, pressed, circles the filter, roaring like a wise priest entering the house with the cattle. Clothed in auspicious garments, the great sage proclaims words of praise. "Be proclaimed, O purified one, from the mixing bowl—far-seeing and wakeful in the divine assembly!" Beloved, he is cleansed on the unshaken summit, most renowned, the best of the famous for us. Purified, he resounds over the plain, and the gods are called to protect us with blessings. Let us sing forth and honor the gods; let us press Soma for great wealth. Sweetly flows the pure one, surpassing every filter; may the god himself sit upon the vessel for us. The drop, seeking friendship with the gods, flows a thousandfold for exhilaration. Praised by men, he follows the ancient path and reaches Indra for our great good fortune. For praise and wealth, the tawny, purified one should rush forth; may this exhilaration reach you, O Indra, for your share. Come with the gods to the chariot of bounty, and may you always protect us with blessings. Like the sage Ushanas proclaiming poetry, Soma reveals the origins of the gods. Of great resolve, pure-banded and radiant, he comes forth with a roar, stepping mightily like a boar. The swans, strong and spirited, arrive, their desires fulfilled; the bull hosts assemble. Friends speak together of the pressing, the unendurable, accompanied by the sound of Soma's flowing. He hastens to the wide song of praise; the cows do not limit his playful wandering. With sharp horns, he circles about; the tawny one is seen by day, pure by night. The vigorous drop flows, abundant in cows. Pressed for Indra, Soma brings strength and exhilaration, destroys the demon, drives away the hostile, opens a path, and stands as king among people. Pressed by the stone, mingled with honey, he flows over the fleece, milked from the mountain. The drop delights in Indra’s friendship, the god’s exhilarant, flowing with joy. Purifying himself, the god flows forth with his own essence, filling the gods with what is dear. The drop, clothed in due order, spreads ten streams upon the unshaken summit. The strong, red one bellows aloud, making earth and sky resound. Like Indra’s fire, he is heard in battle; conscious, he roars forth this speech. Swelling with juice, rich in milk, Soma stirs the sweetest drop. Purifying himself, he extends, being poured for Indra. So flow, exhilarating one, for exhilaration, bowing down the hostile with your mighty blows. Bearing your shining stream around the vessel, flow, Soma, pressed for the cows. Favored drop, move for us on good paths, making easy and wide ways. Like a hammer breaking all evils, flow with your stream over the unshaken summit. Pour for us the heavenly rain—abundant, nourishing, granting happiness, long-lasting. Like a weaver searching the fleece, O drop, find kin and winds below. Untie the knot, O purifier, free the bound one, make the path straight and remove crookedness, Soma. Like a horse with a whip, the tawny one rushes forth, the youthful god, master of the home. Favored for exhilaration, O god-born drop, flow with your stream over the unshaken summit. A thousand fragrant, uninjured streams flow for the winning of strength, for the hero’s prize. Those without reins, unyoked like racers, have rushed forth in the contest. These bright drops flow, O gods; come to them to drink. So, O drop, flow for us with divine favor, pour forth from the sky into the vessels. May Soma grant us the desired—great, heroic, and mighty wealth. When the craftsman, or the mind, or the song, or the most excellent speech acts in accordance with the law, the cows bring the beloved lord, Soma, into the vessel, eager for him. The generous, divine Soma flows forth, granting gifts; he purifies himself for the truth, wise in mind. He becomes king of the fertile, and with ten rays, he makes us abundant. Soma, purified by filters, visible to men, is king of both gods and mortals. He becomes the lord of riches, bringing forth the immortal, the well-nourished, and the lovely Soma. Like a swift horse, for fame and attainment, approach the path of Indra and Vayu. Grant us, Soma, purified, a thousand mighty riches; be the giver of wealth. May the divine Somās, poured out for us, bring lasting strength and prosperity. May they, worthy of sacrifice, grant us universal favor, like heavenly priests, most delightful. Thus, O god, purify yourself for the gods, Soma, for the great offering, fit for divine drinking. Indeed, we are your allies in the contest; purify the two worlds in the best place. Our Soma is like a spirited horse, a bull yoked, a lion fierce, swifter than the mind. Flow with the nearest paths, O Soma, and bring us joy. A hundred streams, born of the gods, have flowed; the sages cleanse Soma with a thousand powers. Flow, O Soma, from heaven, be the leader, you are the forerunner of great wealth. Like the streams of heaven, the wise king does not diminish the friend. Like a son to his father, guided by deeds, flow, O Soma, for the victory of this clan. Your sweet streams have flowed forth, pure and surpassing obstacles. Soma, you purify yourself, you are the abode of cows, you have created the sun, and you fill it with hymns. Resounding, you follow the path of immortality; bright, you shine forth the abode of immortality. You flow for Indra, full of delight, stirring the speech and thoughts of the sages. The divine Soma, like a splendid bird, looks down, filling streams with deeds in the service of the gods. Soma, enter the vessel, the abode of Soma; resounding, approach the ray of the sun.
