Urged forward by sacred intent, Soma—the divine creator of heaven and earth—advances like a swift chariot seeking its prize. He moves toward Indra, armed and resolute, gathering all treasures in his hands. The songs of praise resound for Soma, the strong, youthful, three-backed one, clothed in the woods. Like Varuṇa among the rivers, he bestows precious gifts and grants riches to his worshippers. Surrounded by a host of heroic companions, Soma, all-powerful and victorious, purifies himself as the winner of wealth. With sharp weapons and a swift bow, he is fierce in battle, subduing enemies in contests. Flowing together with the wise, Soma expands wide pastures and makes all things fearless. He seeks the waters and radiant dawns, resounding as he brings great prizes to those who honor him. Soma rejoices in Varuṇa, Mitra, Indra, and Viṣṇu, and in the host of Maruts and all the gods. He, the purified drop, rejoices greatly for exhilaration. Like a wise king, Soma purifies himself, destroying all evils. He grants wings for hymn and word, and always protects with blessings. Soma has flowed forth, strong and purposeful, as if on a chariot in battle, guided by thought and intention—the foremost thinker. On the summit of the mountain, ten sisters give birth to the fire, each to their own dwelling. Indu, poured out and celebrated by heavenly songs, flows among the Nahushas with the wise. Immortal among men, he cleanses himself with cows and waters, shining with purity. The bull, roaring for the mighty, pours out the shining milk of the cow. With a thousand streams, the sun moves forth along the paths, distributing speech among all. Purifying Indu breaks even the firm strongholds of the foe, sweeping away the prizes. The bull above strikes with his weapon, bringing near and far to us. As in ancient times, Soma, all-encompassing, makes the paths straight for the hymn. He helps us overcome those hard to conquer, mighty by nature, abundant in deeds and strength. Purifying, Soma grants heavenly waters, abundant offspring and descendants. He blesses our field with wide light and brings us the sun to see, radiant for our vision. The tawny Soma, poured out, flows through the filter like a chariot released, striving for gain. Purified, he attains the hymn and power, and the gods accept him with their offerings. He enters the filter bearing his name, the seer in the womb of the poet. Sitting like a priest in the house, among the vessels, the seven wise sages approach him. Soma, purified and wise, always comes to the hymn for all the gods, delighting in all songs. The wise one stretches forth among the people, five in number. To purified Soma, all the gods have come—three and eleven. Ten, with their own powers, on the mountain summit, while the seven mighty rivers cleanse him. Let this truth be of the purified Soma, where all poets unite. When light was made for the day, it created the world; Manu led the Karabhika for the Dasyu. Like a house, the sacrificer brings forth wealth; the true king comes to the assembly. Purified Soma enters the vessels, sitting like a deer or buffalo in the forests. Together, the ten sisters—thoughts of the wise—cleanse, flowing. The tawny one runs around the vessel of the sun, measuring it like a horse eager for the prize. Like a child rejoicing with his mothers, the bull flows abundantly with waters. Like a young man with a maiden, Soma goes forth to the vessel with the cows. Wise Indu fills the udder of the nourishing one, joining with streams. The cows, with milk, anoint the head in the vessels, bestowing riches as with ointment. Purified and radiant, Indu, with the gods, brings us wealth like the Ashvins, rejoicing. The generous, swift provider brings us the riches of the gods for our enjoyment. Now bring us wealth, abundant in men, purified and delightful in all ways. Indu, praised, prolongs our life; may the wise and swift come to us in the morning with thought. When thoughts contend, as clans at the sun seeking glory, the poet, choosing waters, flows like a herd for the increase of cattle, with his hymn. With twofold expansion, Soma reveals the immortal realm; the worlds are spread out for the seeker of light. Nourishing thoughts, like cows in their pasture, approach the drop of Soma, moving in accordance with truth. When the inspired one brings forth his works, like a hero with his chariot, he traverses all the worlds. Among the gods he brings fame, and to mortals, adornment, ever new in his abundance of wealth. Born for splendor, Soma advances with splendor, bestowing vigor upon the singers. Clothed in splendor, they attain immortality; true in their assemblies, the two friends are united. Seek nourishment and strength; bring forth the horse and the cow; make wide the light and delight in the gods. All these, O purified Soma, are easily conquered by you; you drive away all enemies. The tawny Soma advances to be released, purifying himself in the belly of the wood. When pressed by men, he makes the path clear; from him, inspired thoughts are born by their own power. Released, he moves along the path of immortality, raising his voice like a boat on the water. The god reveals the secret names of the gods, which are proclaimed upon the sacred grass. The waves of the waters, surging, move toward Soma with their thoughts. Bowing down, they approach and unite; the shining ones enter the shining one. They milk him—the purified one—like a mighty bull on the mountain, flowing, bountiful, dwelling on the heights. Thoughts cling to him as he rushes; Trita bears Varuna in the ocean. Desiring speech, as an assistant repeats for the priest, the purified drop expands understanding. When Soma and Indra dwell together for good fortune, may we be lords of heroic strength. The leader, the hero, stands at the front of the chariots; his army rejoices in seeking cattle. Soma, invoked by Indra, brings blessings to his friends, giving them splendid garments with zeal. His tawny ones cleanse him with reverence, with horse-drawing powers, unwearied. He stands upon Indra's chariot as a friend, wise, going straight to good favor. Soma, god, purifies himself for divine kinship, flowing for Indra's drink and our great abundance. Making the waters and causing the sky to rain, he purifies this wide expanse for our welfare. He purifies himself for conquest, unharmedness, well-being, universal protection, and greatness. All friends praise him, and so it is declared. Soma is purified—the generator of thoughts, heaven, earth, Agni, the sun, Indra, and Vishnu. He is the priest among gods, the path of sages, the seer among the inspired, the bull among beasts, the eagle among vultures, the sustainer among forests. Soma, roaring, surpasses the filter. He spreads forth his speech like a wave of the river; Soma, purified, his thoughts are like songs. Seeing within, he distinguishes the lower and the higher. The bull stands among the cows, knowing. Thus, Soma’s journey is sung: the pure, radiant, ever-flowing one, who grants wealth, wisdom, and protection, who unites gods and mortals, who bestows splendor and immortality, who purifies and inspires, who is the heart of sacrifice and the soul of abundance.
