Within the sacred hall of sacrifice, the offering—rich in gifts—circles the vast divine abode. Clad in the sky’s radiance, Soma moves through the ritual, a king whose chariot is the filter itself. With mounting strength and a thousand streams, Soma wins great fame. Purifying himself in the waters, Soma becomes the delight of the gods and the wise among humankind. He prepares for Indra, Varuna, and Vayu, granting wide protection and well-being. The far-seeing one is praised as he brings honor to the divine race. Soma, immortal, stands among the worlds and flows around all that exists. He gathers together what is scattered, seeking desires, and shines forth like the sun at dawn. Pressed with cows and plants, Soma seeks the favor of the gods; wise, he comes near, flowing in a stream of lightning, delighting Indra and the divine race. Purified, Soma wins a thousand treasures, stirring inspired words and awakening the silent. The drop rises to the ocean with the winds and sits in jars within Indra’s heart. The cows, rich in milk, approach Soma with their thoughts, knowing the sun; the victorious juice is purified, a sage and poet shining with the sun’s brilliance. Well-pressed for Indra, Soma flows around, free from harm and overcoming demons. He keeps the two-faced ones from his juice, ensuring the generous drops remain for the worthy. Soma urges his devotees in battle, delighting the gods, striking down enemies, breaking bonds, and protecting those who seek him. Indra drinks Soma, and foes are destroyed. This uninjured, purified drop is most intoxicating, becoming the highest inspiration for Indra. Many wise ones sing to Soma, the king who settles in the heart of the world. With a thousand streams and hundredfold wonder, Soma, beloved by Indra, is purified into a sweet drink. Conquering, he approaches the fields and waters, granting a wide path to those who honor him. Resounding, Soma is pressed in the vessel with cows, passing through the filter and removing impurity. Purified, like a horse released from the yoke, he flows into Indra’s belly. He flows sweetly for the divine birth, for Indra the gift-bestower, for Mitra, Varuna, Vayu, and Brihaspati—honeyed, unfailing Soma. Ten fingers cleanse Soma in the vessel, and the inspired ones send forth their voices. The purified approach with praise, and the exhilarating Somas enter Indra. Purified, Soma advances to great strength, to wide cattle-rich spaces, to vast, spreading shelter. No enclosure restrains his devotees, and with Soma, they win wealth upon wealth. The wise bull ascends the sky, the sage shines through the two luminous realms. Roaring, the king passes through the filter, and men with vision draw the nectar of heaven. In the vault of heaven, the shining ones milk the bull dwelling on the mountain; in the waters, the growing drop moves from the river’s wave into the honey-rich filter. Ancient songs in the sky praise the soaring eagle; thoughts seek the golden bird, the child, the shining one standing on earth. High above, the Gandharva takes his place in the sky, perceiving all forms. His radiance shines forth, illumining both mothers—earth and heaven. Swift, purified Soma’s exhilarating streams rush forth like quick horses. Divine, honeyed Somas settle around the vessel, most intoxicating. Soma’s streams flow swiftly, each on its own path like chariots. Like a cow with her calf, honeyed Somas flow with milk for Indra, the wielder of the bolt. Eager as a horse, Soma rushes toward the prize, the resounding vessel, the stone, the mother from heaven. The bull, Soma, is purified on the unaging slope for strength and Indra’s enjoyment. Swift divine streams flow with milk into the vessel, sent forth by ancient seers who cleanse Soma. All abodes, all-seeing, O Ribhus, the rays of the mighty abiding one circle Soma. Purified by laws, Soma is lord of all beings, king of creation. Rays of the purified, steadfast one go around him; when the tawny one is cleansed in the filter, he sits in his place in the vessels. Soma, the sign of sacrifice, approaches the seat of the gods, purified and well-ordered. With a thousand streams, he circles the vessel, the bull roaring as he passes through the filter. The king enters the ocean, rivers flow apart, and he unites with the wave of the waters, established among the streams. The purified one sits on the unaging summit, at the navel of earth, the support of great heaven. Like the summit of heaven, thundering and resounding, Soma’s law is observed by both heaven and earth. Purified, he sits in the vessels, seeking Indra’s friendship. The radiant one of sacrifice flows sweet and beloved, father of the gods, creator, all-encompassing. He bestows precious treasure, worthy of offerings, intoxicating and powerful, the essence full of might. Resounding, Soma rushes toward the vessel, the prize-seeker, lord of heaven, with a hundred streams, discerning. The tawny one sits in Mitra’s dwellings, purified by rivers, the bull among streams. Foremost among rivers, Soma rushes forth; foremost in speech, he moves among cows; foremost in strength, he claims great wealth, armed with his own power, purified by the pressers. Inspired, like a bird set free, Soma rushes in a wave. By his will, Soma flows between heaven and earth for Indra, pure with insight. Clad in a shining robe, reaching the worshipper, touching the sky, set in the worlds, knowing the sun, Soma ascends through the clouds, summoning the ancient father from afar. He grants great protection to his worshipper, who first recognized his abode. His step is in the highest heaven, from where he approaches all things, united. Indu advances for Indra’s purification, a friend who does not forsake friendship, like a youth mingling with maidens; Soma flows into the vessel along the hundredfold path. Delightful, wise, and fruitful thoughts enter the gatherings, seeking Soma with intention, hymning like cows seeking milk, approaching the nourishing one. Soma is asked to grant abundant, nourishing flow—purifying himself without delay, yielding ever-flowing, fertile, rich, sweet, heroic strength three times daily. The mighty one among thoughts, Soma, discerning, flows forth, pressed at dawn, shining with the dawns of heaven. Roaring, he enters the vessels of the rivers, pouring into jars, entering Indra’s heart with the inspired. With the inspired, the ancient sage flows, roaring around the vessels with men. Creating the name of Trita, Soma pours out sweet mead, accomplishing the friendship of Indra and Vāyu. Soma, being purified, makes the dawns shine and becomes the maker of space among the rivers. Thrice seven times, he has milked the nourishing essence, lovely and exhilarating, purified for the heart. Soma purifies himself in divine abodes, flows into the vessel through the filter, roaring as he sits in Indra’s belly, guided by men, raising up the Sun in the sky.
