In the sacred realm where the gods dwell, Heaven and Earth themselves, all-pervading, join Aryaman, Aditi the Ordainer, Bhaga, Nṛśaṃsa, the broad midspace, and the entire host of deities in delighting in the purified one—Soma. The tawny, mighty Soma flows forth, drawn by his two bay steeds, roaring like a powerful king. Purified, he circles the unfailing filter, much like an eagle returning to its nest brimming with ghee. Inspired, Soma seeks the greatness of the wise creator, rushing toward the prize like a well-adorned steed. He wards off all that is harmful and brings mercy, clothed in ghee as he passes around the filter. Parjanya is father to the horned, leaf-bearing bull; at the navel of the earth, Parjanya has set his dwelling among the mountains. The waters, Soma’s sisters, gather together, sitting with the stones at the sacred rite. Like a wife with her husband, Soma is gracious for our greatness. The speaker addresses him as the embryo of strength, urging him to move within the vessels for a good life, awakening blameless among the people. As in times past, Soma, the drop, has brought hundreds and thousands of prizes without fail. Now, he purifies himself for new prosperity, with the waters following his command. His filter is spread out, O Lord of prayer, encompassing all forms. Like one with an unscorched body, Soma is untouched by harm; those who have strained him carry his essence together. The filter of heat is stretched at the seat of heaven, its shining threads spread out. The swift ones guard the purifier with their minds, standing at the touch of heaven. At dawn, the bright, speckled bull shines forth, bearing the worlds and eager for strength. Magicians have measured him by their magic, and the fathers with human sight have placed the embryo. Thus, the Gandharva guards his place, preserving the births of the gods. The lord of treasures seizes the foe and has tasted the best portion of honey. The offering, rich in offerings, circles the great divine abode. Clothed in the sky, Soma moves through the sacrifice, kingly, with the chariot of the filter, mounting strength, winning great fame with a thousand streams. Purify yourself, O Soma, delight of the gods, wise among people, in the waters, for Indra, Varuna, and Vayu. Grant wide protection and well-being today, and praise the divine race, O far-seeing one. Immortal Soma stands among the worlds, flowing around all, gathering and scattering, seeking desires, shining forth like the sun at dawn. Pressed with cows, in the plants, Soma seeks the favor of the gods and comes near, wise and lightning-bright, delighting Indra and the divine race. Purified, Soma wins a thousand, stirs the inspired word, awakens the silent, rises to the ocean with the winds, and sits in jars in Indra’s heart. Cows rich in milk approach Soma, nourisher of milk, with their thoughts, knowing the sun. The victorious juice is purified, the sage and poet shining with the sun. Well-pressed for Indra, Soma flows around, free from harm, overcoming demons. Let not the two-faced ones enjoy his juice; let the generous drops be present. Urge us on in battle, O purified one, wise delight of the gods. Strike down enemies, break bonds, let Indra drink Soma, protect us, destroy our foes. Uninjured, purified, most intoxicating, Soma becomes the highest inspiration for Indra. Many wise ones sing to him, the king, who settles in the heart of the world. The thousand-streamed, hundredfold, wondrous Soma, beloved for Indra, is purified as desired sweet drink. Conquering, he approaches the field, conquers the waters, granting a wide path. Resounding, Soma is pressed in the vessel with cows, passing through the filter, removing impurities. Purified, like a horse released from the yoke, Soma flows into Indra’s belly. Flow sweetly for the divine birth, for Indra, bestower of gifts, for Mitra, Varuna, Vayu, and Brihaspati—O unfailing, honeyed Soma. Ten fingers cleanse him in the vessel; inspired thoughts send forth voices; the purified ones approach with praise, and the exhilarating Somas enter Indra. Purified, Soma advances to great strength, to wide cattle-rich space, to vast shelter. Let not his enclosure restrain us—may we win wealth upon wealth with him. The wise bull ascends the sky; the sage shines through the two luminous realms. The king, roaring, passes through the filter; men with vision draw the nectar of heaven. In the vault of heaven, with honeyed tongue, the shining ones milk the bull dwelling on the mountain. In the waters, the growing drop, in the ocean, from the river’s wave, flows into the filter rich with honey. In the sky, ancient songs have praised the soaring eagle; thoughts seek the golden bird, the child, the shining one standing on earth. High above, the Gandharva has taken his place in the sky, perceiving all forms. His radiance, pure brilliance, has shone forth, illuminating both mothers—earth and heaven. Swiftly, the purified Soma’s exhilarating streams rush forth like quick horses. The divine, honeyed Somas, most intoxicating, settle around the vessel. His exhilarating, intoxicating, swift streams have flowed forth, each on its own path like chariots. Like a cow with her calf, the honeyed Somas, waves, flow with milk for Indra, wielder of the bolt. Like a horse eager for the prize, Soma rushes to the resounding vessel, the stone, the mother from heaven. The bull, Soma, is purified on the unaging slope, for strength and Indra’s enjoyment. The swift, divine streams of Soma flow with milk into the vessel; ancient seers cleanse him and send him forth, wise and radiant. All abodes, all-seeing, O Ribhus, the rays of the mighty, abiding one, go around Soma. Purified with laws, Soma is lord of all beings, king. On both sides, the rays of the purified, steadfast one, circle; when the tawny one is cleansed in the filter, he sits in his place in the vessels. The sign of sacrifice, the purified, well-ordered Soma, approaches the seat of the gods. With a thousand streams, he circles the vessel; the bull, roaring, passes through the filter. The king enters the ocean, the rivers flow apart; he unites with the wave of the waters, established among the streams. The purified one has taken his place on the unaging summit, at the navel of earth, the support of great heaven. Like the summit of heaven, thundering, resounding, whose law both heaven and earth observe, Soma sits purified in the vessels, seeking Indra’s friendship. The radiant one of the sacrifice flows, sweet and beloved, father of the gods, creator, all-encompassing. He bestows a precious treasure, worthy of self-offerings, most intoxicating, powerful, full of might. Resounding, Soma rushes toward the vessel, prize-seeker, lord of heaven, with a hundred streams, discerning. The tawny one sits in the dwellings of Mitra, purified by the rivers, the bull among streams. Foremost among rivers, purified Soma rushes forth; foremost in speech, he goes among the cows; foremost in strength, he claims great wealth, armed with his own power, purified by the pressers, the bull. Thus flows the story of Soma: ever-purified, ever-glorious, delight of gods and men, king among offerings, shining forth in sacrifice, granting strength, wealth, and divine favor to all who honor him.
