As the sacred Soma is invoked, its journey begins with a mighty call, likened to a horse’s bellow, gathering the cows and increasing wealth from afar under the gaze of Indu. The Soma streams forth, swift and radiant, winning cows and horses, heroic and vigorous in its flow. Shining brightly, living by truth, it is cleansed between the hands, moving in an unchanging stream, ever pure. These Somas—divine, earthly, and those of the midspace—are called to flow for the worshipper, bringing blessings from all realms. The streams of the all-knowing, flowing Soma pour forth, spreading like the rays of the sun, making a banner across the sky and moving through all forms. Soma swells like the ocean, vast and powerful. As it flows, Soma seeks speech, purified in its course, crying aloud like a god, like the sun itself. The drop, conscious and dear to the sages, enters the filter and, like a charioteer, sets free the horse. Its wave flows around the filter, settling in the womb of truth, divine and potent. The exhilaration, most pleasing to the gods, is called to flow through the filter for Indra to drink. Soma purifies itself for strength, cleansed by the wise, and brings radiant energy to the cows. The singer, purifying himself, makes a path, producing strength for the people, and releases the swift one with the tawny companions. Soma, bestower of gifts to the gods, shines as it goes forth to Indra’s dwelling, accompanied by the swift ones. The drops, impelled, rush swiftly toward the ocean, guided by thought, flowing forth in unison. Cleansed, the streams and drops come together toward the ocean, reaching the womb of truth. Soma is called to encircle the worshippers with all treasures, protecting them with shelter rich in heroes. The fire measures out the seed, fixing the step with the singers, when placed in the ocean. When the swift one sits in the golden womb of truth, he abandons those without understanding, while the wise long for the one who is to be known; the conscious wait, and the unconscious sink down. For Indra and the Maruts, Soma purifies itself, most sweet, having sat in the womb of truth. Inspired sages, knowing speech, surround the wise Soma, and the streams cleanse it together. Mitra, Aryaman, and Varuna, along with the Maruts, drink its essence, rejoicing in the purified one. Soma, possessing wisdom, purifies itself and seeks speech, a drop of thousandfold abundance. At the sacrifice, Soma, praised and purified, brings forth speech of great weight. Much-invoked among people and beloved, the purified drop enters the ocean. With flashing brilliance and resounding voice, the bright Somas flow forth, with the cow as their head. Impelled by the priests, the strong one advances toward the prize, settling as companions do. For prosperity, Soma, wise and gathered from heaven, flows pure for the sight of the sun. The sisters, wives of the Lord of the clan, urge on the mighty drop, empowering it with strength. Pavamana, shining with varied light, god among gods, enters all treasures for the worshippers. He grants abundant praise and rain to the gods, purifying himself for wealth held together. By his radiance, Pavamana is a bull; self-ruler and splendid, he is invoked. He flows for the worshippers, delighting with heroic power, self-armed, and comes to this place. Purified by waters, cleansed between the hands, he reaches his seat in the vessel. Songs arise for Soma, the swift-flowing Pavamana, the great one with a thousand eyes. His honey-dripping, tawny color is urged with stones, the drop prepared for Indra to drink. Vigorous, seeking all wealth, Soma’s friendship is chosen for victory over riches. Soma, the bull, flows with his stream, eager for the Maruts, bearing all powers in his strength. Pavamana, supporter of both worlds and seer of the sun, is urged forth like a steed in contests. With the filter, the tawny one flows with his stream, urging on his yokemate in the contests, ever swift and strong. Thus, the journey of Soma, from its purification and invocation, through its flow and union with the ocean of truth, is celebrated and revered, bringing strength, wisdom, and blessings to gods and men alike.
