As the sacred Soma is pressed and purified, the sages call upon Indu, the divine juice, to pour around them riches of every kind—horses, cows, gold, and streams that flow by the thousand. They choose Soma’s friendship, approaching the filtered essence with reverence, seeking its gracious favor through the forceful streams that pour forth. Soma, the great purifier and lord of all, is invoked to bring wealth rich in heroes and abundant food, to grant prosperity everywhere. The ten swift streams cleanse the mother river, and their purity is praised by the Adityas, the radiant deities. As Soma is pressed, it flows together with Indra and Vayu, passing through the filter and joining with the rays of the Sun, becoming a source of sweetness for Vayu, Pūṣan, Mitra, and Varuṇa. The sages declare that Soma’s birth is placed high in the sky, and they ask for fierce protection and great renown. With Soma’s noble presence, they strive to gain all the splendors of humankind, seeking victory and conquest. The juice flows for Indra, Varuṇa, and the Maruts, opening wide paths and pouring forth blessings. Born pure and adorned, filtered with cows and fragments, Soma is approached by the gods themselves. The songs of the worshippers nourish Soma as cows nurture a calf, delighting Indra’s heart. Soma is asked to flow for their happiness, to bring nourishment to the cows, to milk out sustaining food, and to increase the ocean of praise. Purified Soma creates wondrous thunder in the sky and a vast, universal light. Its exhilarating juice flows unimpeded, spreading through every stream, shining radiant skill and light everywhere in the heavens. With this excellent exhilaration, Soma purifies itself, becoming the destroyer of evil, divine and heroic. Soma has slain the hostile Vṛtra, winning the prize day by day, and is the giver of cows and horses. Mingling with nourishing cows, Soma settles like an eagle in its nest. It flows to aid Indra in slaying Vṛtra, enveloping the great waters. The worshippers, full of praise, seek to conquer wealth with noble sons, asking Soma to increase their songs. With Soma’s help and favor, they wish to overcome all obstacles, urging Soma to be vigilant in its vows. Soma flows, driving away hostilities and removing obstacles, journeying to Indra’s abode. The Purifying One is called upon to bring great wealth, drive away foes, and grant renowned strength filled with heroes. No amount of treasures can diminish Soma, the ever-giving one, who delights in offerings. Indu, strong and pressed, is asked to grant fame among people and drive away hatreds. In Soma’s friendship and highest glory, the worshippers hope to prevail over those who contend against them. Soma’s fearsome, sharp weapons are ever ready to protect from harm and wickedness. As the story continues, the drops of Soma flow swiftly through the filter, seeking all good fortune. They destroy many evils, make easy paths for the children, and grant strength to the offspring. Making wide space for the cows, Soma moves forward with praise, and the worshippers receive the gathered nourishment. Pressed for exhilaration, Soma, skilled and dwelling on the mountain, settles in its place like an eagle. The bright drop, purified by the gods’ wind and pressed by men in the waters, is enjoyed by the cows with their milk. Like horses, the pressers adorn the immortal Soma with honeyed essence at the shared feast. Soma’s streams, flowing with honey for aid, reach the filter, and Soma flows for Indra to drink, passing through the unshorn hairs and resting in the woods. Indu flows most sweetly for the Angirases, granting wide space, clarified butter, and milk. The wise, purifying Soma shines forth, pouring out its vast, ancient stream. This bull, with the vow of a bull, purifying and destroyer of curses, grants wealth to the worshipper. Finally, Soma is called to flow for them a thousandfold wealth—rich in cows and horses, shining before them, and much to be desired.
