Among the mighty, Soma longs for riches, much as a warrior seeks victory and horses in contests of strength. Those who desire success call upon him, and the sages, recognizing his manly powers and his loveliness born of right action, seek Soma in the vast assemblies beneath the great sky. Soma, whose strength is gathered and fit for hymns, upholds a noble vow and has shattered a hundred fortresses. For this reason, the unwearied eagle brings down Soma—the wealth and king of wise counsel—from the heights of heaven. Bearing the all-seeing realm, Soma watches over the nectar with strength, extending his guardianship far and wide. As his strength pours forth, Soma grows ever greater, becoming the benefactor renowned among men. Flowing richly, he brings rain for us, sending waves of water from the sky—abundant, nourishing, and free from sickness. His streams are the same by which cows have come to us, bringing offspring to our homes. In the sacrifices, Soma flows as clarified butter, best supporter of the gods, rich in rain. With his streams, he cleanses the nourishing, unfailing filter, and the gods hear our desires. Purified, Soma destroys the harmful and crushes the malicious; ancient lights shine forth in his wake. His powers rise up, resounding like a river’s roar, urging the press-stone onward with song. Three voices, eager for sacrifice, are raised as Soma flows unimpeded through the channel. Through unbroken coverings, they drive the beloved tawny one with stones—the flowing Soma who pours out sweetness. He flows forth, most exhilarating, through the filter, entering the womb of the hymn with wisdom. Adorned with cows and garments, Soma flows as a drop for Indra to drink, exhilarating all. O Adhvaryu, pour the pressed Soma with stones through the filter, purifying it for Indra. Press out the highest, most nourishing Soma from heaven for Indra, the wielder of the bolt, the sweetest one. The gods and Maruts partake of Soma’s intoxicating juice, enjoying its sweetness as it flows. When pressed, Soma increases in exhilaration, inspiring the worshipper. Advancing wisely through the filter, he brings strength and fame to those who honor him. May Soma, shining and swift-flowing, surround Bharadvāja with his juice, flowing through the filter. With ancient paths and unbroken coverings, beloved Soma flows with a thousand streams. Like a generous friend, he bestows gifts; like a giver, he arms us with weapons and generosity. Indu, much-invoked, cast down the strength of those who oppose us. Flow forth with a hundred aids, or a thousand pure streams, bringing abundant wealth. Soma’s powers rise, breaking demons and driving away those who oppose. With this strength, he triumphs in chariot contests and the pursuit of wealth, praised with fearless hearts. None can withstand the ordinances of Soma, the purifier; he breaks those who contend against him. The exhilarating, tawny, swift Soma is urged on in the waters—a spirited draught for Indra. The unwearied ones have milked forth his ancient, shining essence—Soma, the brilliant seer with a thousand streams. Like the sun, he looks on all sides, running through streams and ascending the seven channels to the sky. Purified, Soma stands above all worlds—he is the god, not the sun. For our divine aid, Soma flows around us, bringing wealth and cattle, purified for Indra. Again and again, he pours forth nourishment, granting us all good fortune. As Soma’s praise is sung and his pressed juice is born, he settles on the sacred grass, his beloved seat. Soma flows for us, granting cows and horses, swift through these days. He conquers and is not conquered, striking down foes without fear, victorious by thousands. Swift and vast, Soma flows through the filter according to truth, driving away demons and manifesting his divine nature. When he flows for strength, with a hundred unceasing streams, Soma enters into the friendship of Indra, completing his sacred journey.
