Soma, freshly pressed and vigilant, journeys through the sacred filter, moving among the gods and men alike. As he flows, he purifies himself for the benefit of the worshippers, bringing forth prizes and creating beautiful sacrifices. The one who is rich in offerings calls upon us, inviting the gods to partake. Wise and ever-strengthening, Soma chooses Bhaga and Vayu as companions among the gods, bestowing their friendship upon us. Today, Soma, knowing both wealth and wisdom, grants riches and fame to those who seek his favor. He purifies himself for exhilaration, shining for the vision of men and for the favor of the gods, preparing himself as a drop for Indra to drink. Flowing forth, Soma fulfills his mission, delighting Indra and gathering the best of the gods as friends. The reddish Soma is adorned with cows for exhilaration, and he grants abundant, far-reaching wealth. The prize-seeker crosses the filter like a swift racer at the yoke, with Indu reigning as lord among the gods. Together, Soma’s companions sound their instruments, playing in the wood and seeking the precious drop with their vessels. With his stream, Soma becomes discerning when drunk, purifying himself for praise and heroic power. The Soma streams forth for the divine offering, like skillful deeds, swelling down from the mountains. The purified drops, like a woman with her ancestral line, flow toward Vāyu. These pressed juices, rich in strength, increase Indra’s power through their actions. Bright ones with good hands come forth, seizing the clear Soma with the strainer and pressing out the juice with cows. Soma, winner of wealth and bestower of great bounty, flows onward, guiding us toward our goal. Ten pourers cleanse this purifying Soma, preparing the exhilarating delight for Indra. Through right action, Soma grows even greater, stirred to overflow and exhilarate. His deeds accomplished, he contemplates the destruction of foes, eager for debts to be paid. From Soma arises the powerful essence, the thunderbolt, a thousandfold, for whom the hymn is born. The sage, in the act of distribution, seeks treasure for the inspired one, when thoughts are purified. Soma desires riches among the strong, as among those who possess horses, for those who wish to win contests. We seek Soma, bearing manly powers, lovely and righteous, in the gatherings of the great sky. With gathered strength and a mighty vow, Soma shatters a hundred fortresses. Thus, the eagle, tireless, brings Soma, the wealth and king of good counsel, from heaven. For the all-seeing, the eagle bears the common, far-reaching realm, the guardian of nectar, with strength. Pouring out strength, Soma attains greater greatness, becoming the benefactor renowned among men. Soma flows forth, rich in rain, bringing waves of water from the sky—abundant, nourishing, and free from sickness. With his stream, cows and offspring come to our home. In sacrifices, clarified butter flows with Soma’s stream, supporting the gods and bringing rain. With his stream, Soma cleanses the nourishing filter, unfailing, and lets the gods hear our desires. The purified Soma destroys the harmful and crushes the malicious, as ancient lights shine forth. Soma’s powers rise up, resounding like the roar of river waves, urging on the press-stone with song. Three voices, eager for sacrifice, are raised as Soma flows, proceeding unimpeded to the channel. Through unbroken coverings, stones drive the beloved tawny one, pouring out sweetness. Soma flows forth, most exhilarating, through the filter, entering the womb of the hymn. Adorned with cows and garments, Soma flows for Indra to drink. The Adhvaryu pours the pressed Soma with stones through the filter, purifying it for Indra. He presses out the highest, most nourishing Soma from heaven for Indra, the wielder of the bolt, the sweetest one. The gods, the Maruts, partake of Soma’s intoxicating juice, savoring the sweetness of the flowing drop. When pressed, Soma increases for exhilaration, inspiring the worshipper and becoming the bull of delight.
