Soma, the divine elixir, is sent forth like a skillful charioteer, freshly pressed and placed within the sacred vessel. Swiftly, he steps onto his destined path, awakened like a vibrant fire, surging with divine vigor toward the vessel brimming with sweetness. As he flows, the Purifier shines forth the ancient lights, bestowing intelligence and skill upon those who honor him. Purified by the truthful hands of the priests, Soma is cleansed and flows into the ageless vessel, ever-renewed. For the devoted worshipper, he purifies all treasures—those of heaven, earth, and the midspace between. Born of the horse and seeking the cow, Soma ascends to the summit of heaven, the giver of heroism and lordly might. Pressed and mighty, Soma pours through the filter, prepared for drinking, driving away the Rakshasas and all evil. Discerning and tawny, he rushes forth with power, bellowing as he seeks his womb. Purified and vigorous, he races across the shining realms of heaven, slaying demons and reaching the unfailing shelter. On the summit of Trita, Soma shines forth with his kin and with the Sun. As the bull among offerings, Soma, the slayer of Vritra, grants vast space to the worshippers, charging ahead like a steed toward strength. Impelled by the sage, the godly drop runs to the vessels, bearing greatness for Indra. This bull, unwearying as a chariot, flows with protection, seeking the thousandfold prize. The tawny one, maiden of Trita, is pressed with stones, the precious drop prepared for Indra’s delight. Ten bright fingers cleanse and adorn him, preparing him for exhilaration. Among men, he sits like a majestic eagle at gatherings, advancing as a lover to his beloved. The exhilarating juice, child of heaven, reveals itself, entering the shelter as a cherished drop. Pressed and tawny, he rushes forth, powerful and crying out, seeking the beloved womb. Inspired and radiant, Soma surges forth to the place where the gods joyfully proclaim, “He has come!” Cleansing all that is impure, guiding the people, and dispelling darkness, he pours down the heavenly rain. Through the filter, the pressed one comes, bearing brilliance and strength, discerning and shining. Swiftly, he flows around the sky, pouring out the waves of the river. From afar and near, Soma is called, poured as honey for Indra. In harmony, the priests press the tawny one with stones, seating him within the sheltering womb. The Purifier, moving forward, overcomes all hostilities with wisdom, adorned by inspired thoughts of the sages. The reddish one, pressed, ascends to the womb; strong Soma comes to Indra and settles in the firm seat. Now, mighty Indu, pour forth abundant wealth from every side; flow for us, bringing thousands. Bring all glories with your streams, O Soma, granting wealth of thousands. Bestow upon us heroic strength and wealth for praise, increasing the songs of the singer. Bring us double wealth, O strong and praiseworthy Indu. Like lowing cows, the swift and impetuous ones advance, striking away the darkness. We desire that well-being which is hard to cross, the strength to overcome lawless foes. The sound of the powerful Purifier is heard like rain, and lightnings flash in the sky. Flow for us, O Indu, with great wealth—cows, gold, horses, and prizes. Fill the great worlds, O wise one, with your flow, like the rays of dawn and the sun. Surround us on all sides with your sheltering streams, O Soma, covering the earth like a river with your juice. Soma, the tawny one, clad in waters, moves, generating the heavenly lights and the sun within the waters. With ancient wisdom, this god is purified for the gods, flowing in a mighty stream. The Somas, with a thousandfold strength, are purified for increase and for winning the prize. Milking the ancient, proper milk, he is poured around the filter; crying out, the gods themselves have generated him anew.
