In the sacred lap of Aditi, the inspired ones, with subtle and refined thought, cleanse the mighty steed—Soma. Like devoted caretakers, they prepare him for his divine journey, honoring his strength and presence. The cows, symbols of abundance, draw near to him, the thousand-streamed, unfailing drop, who upholds the heavens themselves. Purified and wise, Soma ascends to the sky, celebrated with intelligence and praised as the generous supporter of all. Ever-renewed and radiant, the companion of the shining gods and lord of speech, he stands unassailable, lauded by thoughtful minds. Upon the mountain heights, the tawny Soma is pressed by the wives with stones, their hands delighting in his far-seeing presence. Pavamana, the wise and exhilarating drop, is pressed by the learned, swelling with song and destined to bring joy to Indra. This sage, highly praised, delights upon the filter, and through his purification, he dispels all obstacles before him. Skillfully accomplished, he is poured out for Indra and Vayu, bringing light wherever he flows. Led by men, Soma, the bull and knower of all, becomes the head of heaven amidst the forest. He roars, golden-hued and victorious, swift in the assembly, longing for cows and blessings. Shining alongside the sun in the sky, he brings forth exhilarating joy through the filter. This vigorous, tawny one, purified in the midspace, is pressed as an offering to Indra. Set in motion by devoted men, Soma, lord of all-knowing minds, rushes forth like an unimpeded steed. Pressed for the gods, he flows into the filter and enters every abode, pervading all realms. Gloriously he shines, immortal in his womb, the slayer of Vṛtra and the best supporter of the gods. With a mighty bellow and ten companions, he surges toward the vessels, all-wise Pavamāna, who has caused the sun to shine and entered every dwelling. Purifying himself, Soma flows mightily for the undeceived, destroying evil speech and enriching the world with gods and heroes. The powerful streams of pressed Soma pour forth, followed by the gods themselves. Inspired ones cleanse the draught, singers raise their voices in praise, and radiant, hymn-worthy light is born anew. Soma’s purifying powers increase the ocean of hymns, uniting all treasures by his stream and keeping enmities side by side, contained. He protects from harm and reproach, purifying both earthly and heavenly wealth, and bringing radiant strength. Freely, Soma’s strong streams flow through the filter, seeking the voice, while the drop, descending with the pressers, is cleansed and stirs up powerful force. He pours out strength for his devotees—strength that conquers, is rich in heroes, and much desired. Purifying, he settles upon the vessels, honeyed and golden-hued, poured with stones into the waters for Indra’s delight. The most honeyed Soma is pressed out for Indra, the wielder of the bolt, lovely and exhilarating for the divine hosts. The self-purifying, flowing Somas advance, creating abundant, conscious wealth. Soma, dwelling above heaven and earth, increaser of glory, is invoked as the lord of treasures. For him, the winds are eager, the rivers rush, and his greatness ever expands. Soma gathers strength from all directions, becoming the very meeting-place of riches. On the highest ridge, cows yield inexhaustible ghee and milk for him, the tawny one. As lord of all that exists, armed with his own might, Soma is sought as a friend by all. Pressed and overflowing with delight, the Somas advance for the fame of those who honor them, generous in the assembly. The women of Trita press the tawny one with stones, preparing the drop for Indra to drink. Like a swan awakening its flock, Soma stirs thought in all; like a horse, he is yoked with cows, ready for the journey. Soma speaks both words, rushing like a marked deer, ever seated in the womb of truth, carrying the prayers and hopes of the faithful into the heart of creation.
