The Somas began their sacred journey, surging forth with eagerness and strength, carrying the sweetness of honey and the thrill of exhilaration. Their presence encompassed all the sacred rites, infusing them with vitality. These ancient streams, ever-renewing, now followed a fresh course, and by their own radiance, they gave birth to the sun itself. O Purifying One, the people called, bring us—generous and fearless—into fullness of life; bestow upon us children and sustenance. The Somas, those sacred streams, became purified as they flowed, brimming with intoxicating delight, filling the vessels with their honeyed essence. Soma, the mighty one, flowed forth, sustaining all with strength and vital sap, standing as a protector against any harm or curse. Purified for Indra and the gods, Soma became their companion at the feast, striving for the highest prize. Indra, having partaken of Soma’s exhilarating power, rose unconquered and struck down his foes again and again. Across their courses, the Somas flowed—the purifying Indu streams—cleansing the shining ones within the waters. Like cows, the Somas streamed forth, moving along their paths like rivers, seeking Indra, the mighty lord. O Purifying One, you flowed for Indra’s delight, led forth by men, bringing joy and support to the tribes. Enduring and worthy of praise, you, Soma, delighted all people. When pressed with stones, O Indu, you rushed through the filter, ready for Indra’s dwelling. Flow on, slayer of Vṛtra, with our hymns—pure, radiant, and wondrous. You are called Soma, pure and shining, the pressed honey, godly and heroic, destroyer of evil speech. Flow forth, O tawny one, skillful and strong, for the gods’ drinking—your exhilaration is for the Maruts and for Vayu. O Pavamana, set in motion by thought, roaring, enter your womb; by your law, unite with Vayu. Together with the gods, the mighty poet shines, beloved in his resting place, slayer of Vṛtra, most worthy among the gods. Purified, Soma entered all forms, moving joyfully to where the immortals are seated. The ruddy Soma, inspiring songs, flowed for long life, the wise one journeying to Indra. Flow forth, most exhilarating sage, through the filter; you have found your seat in the womb of the hymn. The inspired ones cleansed that strong steed, Soma, in the lap of Aditi, with subtle thought. The cows gathered to him, the thousand-streamed, unfailing drop, the supporter of heaven. Purified, the wise one was praised with intelligence in the sky, supporter and bestower of gifts. Ever-renewed, companion of the radiant one, lord of speech, unassailable, he was honored with thoughtful praise. To the tawny one, the wives pressed with stones on the mountain, bringing forth the delightful, far-seeing Soma. The wise pressed Pavamana, growing with song, O exhilarating drop for Indra. This sage, highly praised, delighted upon the filter; purified, he drove away all obstacles. Skillful and radiant, he was poured out for Indra and Vayu, bringers of light. Led by men, the bull, pressed Soma, knower of all, became the head of heaven amidst the woods. Longing for cows, Pavamana roared, golden-hued and victorious, swift in the assembly. Pavamana shone with the sun in the sky; in the filter, his exhilaration was manifest. The vigorous, tawny one, purified, was pressed in the midspace—the drop, O Indra, for you. Set in motion by men, this vigorous one, lord of all-knowing minds, ran forth unimpeded, swift as a steed. Pressed for the gods, Soma flowed into the filter, entering all abodes. Gloriously he shone, immortal in his resting place, slayer of Vṛtra, best supporter of the gods. Bellowing mightily, with his ten companions, he rushed toward the vessels. All-wise Pavamāna made the sun shine; knower of all, he entered every abode. Purifying himself, Soma flowed powerfully for the undeceived, destroyer of evil speech, rich in gods and heroes. The streams of this strong, pressed Soma flowed forth with power, followed by the gods. The inspired ones cleansed the draught, and singers praised with song; radiant and hymn-worthy, the light of Soma was born anew.
