Soma, the swift and radiant one, moves with vigor across both earth and heaven, bearing prizes and dwelling in every delight. Purified in the sacred vessels, Soma’s powerful cry resounds, permeating all pleasures and joys. O Soma, bring to us every splendid hymn and divine or earthly wealth, purified and full of blessing. You, together with Indra, are lords of light and guardians of cattle; as masters, nourish our thoughts and grant us wisdom. The bull, purified and thundering with life, settles upon the grass; the tawny Soma approaches his dwelling, filling it with vitality. Within the seed of the bull, thoughts stir, mothers nurturing the calf, the son. Perhaps the purified one places the embryo in the fertile ones, those who milk the bright and nourishing milk. Learned ones, approach and stand firm; instill fear among enemies, and grant us wealth, O purified Soma. Cast down the strength, vigor, and vitality of the enemy, whether near or far, and protect us. The inspired sage, Soma, flows forth unimpeded for the favor of the gods, confronting all rivals with his streams. He brings singers wealth abundant in cattle, a thousandfold prize, O Purifying One. With keen mind, Soma examines all things as he is purified, and grants renown to his devotees. Flow forth with great glory, Soma, bring steadfast wealth to the generous, and bestow nourishment upon the singers. Enter the songs like a king, O Soma of good resolve, wondrous fire among us. That fire, Soma, hard to overcome in the waters, is cleansed between hands and settles in the vessels, shining brightly. Playful and festive, Soma reaches the filter, granting heroic strength to the hymn. The swift drops of Soma, eager for Indra and full of zest, knowing the light, rush forth. Choosing their own path and overcoming adversaries, they create vigor for the hymn and know the way to rest. The drops play together in vain on the seat, pouring out waves from the river. These purifying ones seek all desirable things, like well-yoked horses on a chariot. On this bright one, the drops place the mark for the singer, our helper. Like the Rbhus placing a new chariot, they set the sign for the singer; bright and purified, they are without stain. These drops have awakened, made their goal, and produced insight for the one who exists. Energetic Somas, like chariots, rush forth to the prize; their streams, released, hasten onward. Like winds, they resound; like Parjanya’s rains and Agni’s whirls, they move freely. Purified and wise, the Somas, bearing the head of Dadhya, spread their thoughts far and wide. Immortal and purified, they traverse the atmospheric paths, never wearying. Moving apart, they spread the backs of the two worlds, reaching the highest region. Weaving the supreme thread, the Somas seek the way forward, attaining the highest achievement. Soma brings forth wealth from merchants, cattle, and stretches the thread, making it resound in celebration. The Somas flow forth with honeyed strength and exhilaration, encompassing all sacred works. Ancient streams follow newer paths, and by their radiance, the sun is produced. O Purifying One, bring us—the generous and undaunted—to life; grant us offspring and nourishment. The Somas, purified and flowing with intoxicating delight, fill the vessel with honeyed sweetness. Soma flows, sustaining strength and essence, the mighty protector against malediction. Purified for Indra and the gods, Soma is a companion at the feast, always seeking the prize. Indra, having drunk of Soma’s exhilarations, unconquered, strikes down his foes again and again. The Somas flow forth on their courses, the purifying Indus streams cleansing the shining ones in the waters. Cows, like rivers, move along their courses; the purified ones seek Indra. O Purifying One, you flow on your course, Soma, for Indra to drink, led forth by men, ever present in the sacred rites and celebrations.
